Obama’s letter to Sasha and Malia…

I’m a jaded cynic of the highest level…but I can’t deny the power of Grey’s Anatomy, the power of those Kleenex confessional commercials and the emotional power of a dad writing to his daughters about their new lives (in the White House). (source Parade Magazine)
Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you’ve both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you have. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn’t make up for all the time we’ve been apart. I know how much I’ve missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I’d make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.
I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential—schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even if their parents aren’t rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.
I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you’ll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.
Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country—but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free—that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.
That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.
She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better—and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It’s a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.
I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you’ve had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much—although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.
These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That’s why I’ve taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.
Love, Dad

I suppose its a fitting introduction to the lives under a microscope they will begin to lead shortly, but the cynic in me says this is quite the opposite of a personal letter. I love the sentiment in the letter, but to publish it in Parade Magazine?
*channels inner Stewie Griffin* “Parade Magazine? You read Parade Magazine? Ugh”

i know…but when you’re fully a public person, then your kids will grow up in the public eye and this is one part of their public history that they will share with us. Kind of like how the letters btw the Reagans were published and the family vacation photos of the Kennedy’s are part of our collective memory too.

No this dude did not ask about Obama’s stance on the Byrd gang after reading that letter. Anyways, that’s why I voted for Obama…makes us proud!

I’ll leave the politics out of this but I’ll just say that few things touch me like the depiction of a strong blacC man bringing up his kids.

Don’t let my girlfriend see that – her biological clock is already out of control and that might be just enough to push her over the edge for good (and take me with her).

Good point on the Regan letters and Kennedy pics. I think the Giants loss and the 18 degree weather are making me over-cynical this week.

Well……my first reaction was the same as #6. I felt lik I was reading something I wasn’t supposed to. If this came out when the girls were older and the wanted to share this with us that would be different, but whatever that’s not my call. Either way I’m definitely gettin my “Man-Cry” on right now (excessive Blinking..lol)
P.S. – Who’s his top 5 dead or alive??

I’m not knocking anything in this letter because it’s really heartfelt and sweet and I’m sure some day they’re really going to be able to understand all of what he’s said in detail.
But it seems kind of like it’s a reassurance to America of everything he’ll be doing etc. It sounds like a speech.

Sometimes you just need to put down in writing what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.
He’s going to be absent more than ever from his family when he becomes president, which I know will hurt him. I think it’s ajournal, an heartfelt letter, and a reminder of why he is devoting most of his time to his country.

Sounded like a campaign speech, but the right kind. Putting that kind of message to his daughters at their age illustrates just how smart this man is – he understands that children are not dumb, and this was the perfect time to give his daughters this message.
Almost cried!

When you read this letter, it was obvious that President-elect Obama wanted others to read it. The more I hear or in this case read his words, the more powerful I think he is. He is definitely a product of the fruits of Malcom and Martin’s labor. I pray that he doesn’t see an untimely demise, but when you read letters like this it’s like he is expecting it to happen. He has already done so much for not just black people but people in general without doing much of anything. He is an inspiration and the American dream in the physical form. The bar has been set so high for him, that the only way he can be considered a success is if he is assassinated, similar to JFK, Martin, Malcom or murdered like Tupac and Biggie (who even with their own personal failures are still praised because of their deaths). God Bless our 44th President and his family.

ladies and gentle man here is your next president of the United States, the man who will lead us into destruction. The man who have deceived the entire world. The man who has come to fulfill the devils work. The man who is known as the Anti-Christ.
Anyone who don’t believe me print my comment out and keep it for the next two years and watch everything I’ve said here come through.

You will see!!
Everything is by design. You think its by destiny he got in.
Do your research look alluminati or free mason and look at the symbol or hand shake and then research obama and how many hand signal he gives that represent free masonary and then get back to me.
Even research Jay-z and you see another freemason. Knowledge is power.

Hi all! I didn’t vote for Obama this past election. I got discouraged when McCain lost, and said that I wasn’t going to vote ever again. I was highly against his being pro-abortion. Anyway, reading this letter, if this is really the true letter, makes me think that this is the kind of guy we want as our president. Compassionate, respectful, humble. I’m not an Obama fan, but with that said, I really do think that he will be a great president, and everyone needs to unite around our 44th president of this great country of the United States of America!

i do not have babies and not married just yet, but this letter comes at a wonderful time to realize how much love can exist in a family. this depicts honesty, trust, openness a father could share with his children, he is deep & sincere to what he feels for his daughters.
