On Thursday night, Nicki Minaj joined Angie Martinez in the Hot97 VIP Lounge for their long-awaited first interview…..and it was as juicy as I expected.
Part 1: Nicki talks about being excite not nervous for the release of her debut album, Kanye calling her the best rapper, not comparing herself to other rappers and more
Part 2: Nicki talks about getting into Hip-Hop, her early influences, and addresses Lil Kim (“Roman’s Revenge”)

Everyone knows that nicki paid homage to kim numerous times but for some reason kim felt like she was being subliminal with disses. Insecurities & karma are both a muthafucka. Had kim focused all this energy on making an album her career wouldn’t be in the predicament that it’s in now.

I just don’t understand Kim’s beef though. When I listen to Nicki and listen to Kim they don’t even seem like they’re in the same lane. Nicki’s swag (ugh) seems more comic based whereas Kim was more ghetto Connie Corleone.
You could make a case later on that Kim got more “plastic” but her lyrical content still isn’t a match. There are a few questionable comparisons but to me they were more of a nod, not Nicki not paying homage. Kim is starting to come off as bitter that a new person is in the game.

Finally someone with some common sense. I TOTALLY AGREE with you man. The beef started because Nicki & Baby kind of used Kim to give Nicki some instant credibility and used Kim to give her fans permission to accept Nicki. Baby asked Kim to do a song on his album which also featured Nicki. But he didn’t tell Kim that Nicki was going to be on the song. So after Kim did the song it got “leaked” on the internet & mixtapes, and it never made it on Baby’s album. I believe they never intended for the song to be on Baby’s album at all. It was just a way to introduce Nicki to Kim’s fan-base. If someone did that to me, I would probably react the same way Kim did. I just hope they can get together and squash the whole thing & let bygones be bygones. Kim has to try and be the bigger person and reach out to Nicki. And I hope Nicki realizes how much of a threat Lil Kim is. Every single female MC that tried to “go at” Kim, isn’t around anymore. Foxy, Eve, Remy. personally Kim lost that beef w/ Foxy, sure Quiet Storm Remix got a lot of spins on the radio (plus had a video), but Bang Bang was not radio friendly at all. Foxy named names and made it quite clear who she’s talking to and we know how that crossed-over into real street shit (shots fired, video tapes and fed cases).
Based on Nicki’s prior style I’m sure it won’t be hard for her to take it there, but at the expense of losing her cross-over fans and F’ing up any other plans she got for her career.
When can we have female artist embrace the next-gen of female artist? Have them on a track together, and they wonder why female emcees are an endangered species, they’re like big foot, you tell another person about some female you heard spit and they have no clue who/what you’re talking about ’cause nobody but you heard/saw her.
Word is bond, where is the female equivalent to the male crews (Wu, DipSet, DefSquad, JuiceCrew, etc)? GZA tried it w/ Deadly Venom, but then what happened? What about putting an up-and-coming female on your track like dudes do.

I love Nicki Minaj for being one of the hottest rappers from New York RIGHT NOW.
I love that she is something very nice to look at compared to other female rappers.
I love that everyone embraces her. Love it.

Here’s the deal: Whatever the beef, however the dialogues actually played out, the truth is none of us will ever know. Ever. Why? Because none of us on this comment list were present at the time & location that the actual events that created this situation occurred. Since that’s the case, it’s really no one’s business whatsoever to try & figure out who said what and who did what to whom, because we don’t have the facts and we never will.
Knowing all this, let’s state what we DO know.
1.) Whatever Nicki (Onika/Cookie) is doing now, is just that: for now, for the moment, and she’s making that moment work for her – this is why she is part of Pop Culture, because Pop Culture references what is popular and entertaining at the moment. The Nicki Minaj brand may or may not last, but she knows this, which means if she is an intelligent brand-maker, she will make her mark as hard & fast as possible. You can like her music or not, but none of us can take away from the work that she’s put in because none of us are in a position to judge another human being for their experiences or actions.
2.) Nothing Nicki Minaj is doing now for Pop Culture should take away from what Lil’ Kim has done in the past for Hip-Hop. Even if Nicki secretly utterly despised Kim & her music, the fact is that professionally she has kept a very balanced attitude towards her (mind you, I said balanced, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s been kind). Lil’ Kim fans are getting all riled up for nothing; the press is feeding all of us garbage about this “beef” when in actuality neither artist is doing anything to stop the other’s shine. If Kim had the budget & production together to create a new album, there’s no doubt in my mind that her sales would be exceptional, particularly since this recent bit of drama would more than feed into the hype for it.
In the end, let’s keep in mind that this is all ENTERTAINMENT. How do we know that Kim & Nicki didn’t have a secret meeting and plan all of this beef so that Kim could come out with a super fresh album in 2011 with free promotion from the media fallout? That may be entirely untrue, but my point is that we as non-direct observers of these stories & events shouldn’t feel the need to be angry at one another over what is basically nothing more than music industry bullshit (I say that with love). We truly have to be careful about how far we take our fan devotion. Let’s never forget that the media & the news have admitted to making the Biggie/Pac beef escalate into the East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry. Let us never forget that there are journalists & editors who have said ON RECORD that they were responsible for inciting the feelings & setting the scene for the tragic deaths of both artists as well as numerous acts of violence in the name of rap territory & “drama.”
I’m all for fans being behind their favority artists, I’m even cool with some entertaining hip-hop beef. But we’ve already seen what can happen when we take things to heart that should never have been put there in the first place. Real talk.

I’m not a bandwagon hip hop fan and have yet to see any real talent from Nicki, Once her gimmicks get old there won’t be much left but I think she’s an outstanding trendsetter. the fact still remains, she just took Kim’s style n ran with it, her rhymes are very simple and elem. , making her voice go up and down to mask those lame raps, besides who wouldn’t be HOT w/Lil Wayne on the team….
