After disappearing and taking a hiatus from social media, Nicki Minaj blasted off her new singles “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li” on Beats 1 radio on Thursday (Apr. 12). The Queen Barbz sat down with Zane Lowe for an hour-long interview, where she spoke on her much needed break from the public, finishing her long-awaited fourth studio album, Cardi B and the “Motor Sport” controversy, Quavo and his role in that record, Drake and more. During the live conversation, Lil’ Wayne and Birdman called in separately to surprise the Young Money triple-threat on what was dubbed “Nicki Day.”

Speaking about her fourth solo album, the Queens-native reveals she’s been working on it since late last year. “I’ve been working on this album since December,” she tells Lowe, noting that some records were done nearly two years ago. “This is very important for people to know. Some songs were written a year-and-a-half ago. That’s important to know.” While the album-title is top secret Nicki says, “It fits everything that I am right now, where I am in my life.”

The 35-year-old also spoke on being in love with Meek Mill during his beef with Drake and the difficult position she was in. After call-ins from Lil’ Wayne and Birdman soon after, Nicki spoke on on their much-publicized legal woes and staying out of family issues since she is loyal to both Weezy and Baby.

An emotional turning point of the conversation came when the subject on Cardi B came up. Nicki would first deny any feud with the “Bodak Yellow” rapper after their “Motor Sport” collaboration with the Migos. Fighting back tears, Minaj would explain that she felt “hurt” that Cardi didn’t sing her praises or say “thank you” for working with an artist of her stature in an interview with UK’s Capital 1Xtra after the song dropped.

When I first came in the game, if a female of [my] stature had done a feature with me on it, I would only be singing their praises and saying thank you,” said Minaj. “The first interview [Cardi] did after ‘MotorSport’ came out, it just really hurt me, because she looked so aggravated and angry, and the only thing she kept saying was, ‘I didn’t hear that, she changed her verse.'”

The rap heavyweight stated that a scheduling conflict is the reason why fans don’t see Cardi and herself together in the “Motor Sport” video, and spoke out on Quavo who she felt could have cleared things up. “You still did interviews and you all still jumped around that just to paint Nicki as the bad person so you could play the victim. That really hurt me. I fully supported her and up until this recent interview, I had never seen her show me genuine love in an interview. I can just imagine how many girls wish they could have been on a song with Nicki Minaj. I’m not saying it in a cocky way but yikes.”

When it was time to clear the air about that, no one did that,” she said. “All of them allowed me to look like I lied.”
