New Video: Trey Songz feat. Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy “LOL Smiley Face” (aka D.I.Y. on a hundred thousand trillion?)
Posted by Miss Info under hmmm....? , life beyond rap , videos[73] Comments
This is like when Dove decided to use “real women” half naked on their beauty ads. In theory, it was a great message. But I think a cross-the-board film-quality standard is sorely missed. That’s difficult if you’re calling in submissions from real fans. But it woulda made all the difference. On the other hand…there are some very psyched young gals (and 1 guy) out there today. (thanks to Mr. X)

This video was probably the cheapest to make, but it could be an internet hit. Also, all those girls were curvy as hell. I love it. Im going to be rewatching this.

Its very cute.
And it works, because to be honest, what kind of other concept could this song have had in terms of a video?
You can’t have a video for ‘LOL Smiley Face’ without making any of the guys come out looking comical.
I like it.

i have to disagree, Info.
This was genius across the board. Considering the alternative would’ve been some predictable, forgettable garbage like 90% of hiphop/rnb videos.
Reminds me of Kanye’s “Through the Wire”. Real shit almost always wins IMO.

well I like the fact that its fan-generated, but don’t you think it woulda looked better if all the video was clearer?

maybe. but thats the point. its meant to be “‘raw footage”, no?
ppl are used to youtube and cam video quality, anyway. voyeourism is the trend these days.

i guess you have a point…I think it could still be voyeuristic but with a travelling camera crew though, shooting each segment
November 25th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. this shit was perfect. props to da boi trey songz for this one. raw, real, and prolly generated him 2million more twiggaz. haha. only downside is the list of chicks that are gonna be walking around their local malls actin like pseudo-celebs now ha.

its also such a great testimant to the digital age we live in, and how close fans can be to their idols through the internet, which is really what the song is about. instead of those girls having to show up to shady casting calls and deal with crooked agents to maybe get in a music video with some local nobody, all they needed were there webcams, iphones and twitter accounts and they’re now in a piece of music video history with their favorite artist. pretty amazing when you think about it

Props to Trey Songz! That was the smartest move I’ve seen in a while.
1) Shows fan appreciation
2) People in the video (Like Poster #2) will tell their friends and others via twitter, facebook, message boards, etc. which will generate more radio requests, album sales, etc.
3) It alleviates us watching grown men embarrass themselves in a LOL video.
And on a side note, if it was just the regular video, Miss Info wouldn’t have posted it and we all know any publicity is good publicity! Now I just wonder if it will get any play on BET and MTV since it isn’t so clear.

I luv luv luv this video, Trey has nothing but LUV for his fans and this video shows that! It doesn’t always have a be a fancy video! I like two thumbs up!!! I see some of TSMB in there reppin! yaaaay!

I prefer this to most of the videos being put out these days and is better to see ‘real’ women than typical video ones.
It’d be harsh though to just select the videos for inclusion by how good the quality of their submission was. There will be some people on that that will be over the moon now

i didnt mean pick the clips by video quality. I meant watch the submissions then go film the subjects.

Oh I thought you meant it the other way. I doubt if anyone would go travelling round the country and possibly world to film them all but it’d be good if they were invited to be at a central location to get into the video.
There’s an idea for the Miss Info debut single!

The video is real cute. I think its a great outreach to the fans. I’m sure all the girls that made appearances in the video are psyched. On the comment of the comparison to Dove Real Beauty campaign: let’s not get it twisted: they are owned by the same company as Axe body spray (UniLever) LOL

Smart concept, will definitely garner attention. The use of raw footage and real fans will draw additional viewers.
BUT… are any of these girls over 18?!
I felt like I was watching kiddie porn at times. Hearing Trey Songz sing “said she wanna sex this,” while a pic of an adolescent girl pops up, made me uneasy. There were moments where this vid had R. Kelly written all over it.

This was pretty cool and refreshing to watch…yea the video quality was a bit unclear but hey it is what it is. The fans just want to be acknowledged and I think Trey nailed it with this one. He’s an artist that really understands the whole fan appreciation concept.

Awesome video…and too cute!! If I had been a couple years younger, I probably would have submitted my own video. The girls were adorable and they really like Trey and the song and it shows in the submission. This had to be an ego boost for Trey (even if he didn’t need it) and those that got chosen to appear in the video. I like Trey more now then before. Anyone who always there fans to put on their own interpretation of their song, makes a full length video of it, and never once appears in it is okay in my book. I can’t think of any other artist right now that seems to appreciate his fans this much. Kudos to Trey and those who got picked.
P.S. the absence of scantily-clad models reenacting these scenes is a welcome refresher as well. I don’t know how many videos I’ve seen that are based around “the fans” but have models “acting like fans”. Real fans are better.
Sorry so long-winded

After the Drake best I ever had debacle, this was pretty cool. I think it made total sense. I dig the concept and I see why his fans are so loyal. Hey It’s either this or as Star & Buckwild said, “some old left over E forty bitches” Now with that being said, Some of the girls where hella young to be singing something so sexual. (Curb your Enthusiasm) LOL

Guess they shouldn’t have put it out on the net, if you didn’t want to share with the world.
Still, a well done concept by Mr. Songz, but something tells me Soulja Boy may have been responsible for this.
If it wasn’t already, this song is going to be a viral BEAST

I think that the concept was awesome, and overall a really great idea. The video quality didn’t seem to be all that bad… a higher video quality would’ve made the video look fake and not genuine in my opinion.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!
In regards to the video quality being missed… I have to disagree with you Miss Info. I think that the viewing public will be able to overlook that aspect and accept this video for what it is…a homage to Trey’s fans. Let’s be real..how many artists would be willing to do this? He took a risk of releasing a poorly produced video so his fans would know how much he loves them.
In my book that makes all the difference.
Thanks for posting!
