Telling you man, I feel like a hater but I’m just so disappointed in hip-hop nowadays. So much shit coming out just smacks of insincerity. I don’t feel the “realness.” And I don’t mean the “keep it real” realness, I mean the genuine non-formulated fucking creativity and energy. I mean Waka Flocka goes hard on that tip but it’s an understatement to say that it’s simpleton shit. Then you got Kanye who spits but is playing himself with all the materialistic brand worship, among other things. Ugghhhh it’s a let down.

insincerity is exactly right. You know it, I know it. It’s obvious to anyone who actually loves hip hop, but the simps will tell you you’re a hater:

Yo, good to see some people can feel that. And obv I fuck with Ghost, I’m not acting like there’s no options and I’m just gonna listen to talk radio for the rest of my life. (Although we would all do well to listen to a little NPR now and then.) I just feel like, I’m only 33 and I’m still young, but not too young to remember when the dudes that were popping actually had substance. Ie: G Rap, Kane, KRS, etc. I also remember that when I was a kid there was really no “older” hip-hop; we also came up on classic rock, etc. Nowadays there’s no context for anything. Nicki Minaj could literally remake “99 Red Balloons” word for word and these kids wouldn’t notice, I swear to god! I feel ashamed at having to note again, for good measure, that I’m not a hater, but I’m not. I just see corny shit all around me. And worse, I see people that know better cosigning on it cus it pays. Shit, I work two jobs so I know we all need $$$$, but where is the line drawn?
yoprince Reply:
October 28th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
seriously?
33 isn’t young. sorry.
and 99 luftballons or 99 red balloons came out in the early 80s, right? why would any ‘kids’ know that record?
nicki minaj herself may not have been born when that song was released.
memo: if you are 30 plus, give it up already.
listen to your g rap and your kane and krs, and age with grace. let the bitterness go.
just b/c you’re still working weekends to cover your rent, doesn’t mean you’re still young.
yoprince Reply:

just to clarify, there’s nothing wrong with being a critic, but saying stuff like, “i’m 33, i’m still young” really reveals the bias and incredible nature of your thought process.
you’re not Jay-Z, 30 is NOT the new 20, and none of us is forever young.

Damn, that’s ill. I’m not gonna get into personal shit cus I don’t know anything about you. But you don’t know where or when I’m working or what for, so fall back. And I’m not bitter, just think hip-hop’s at a low point and that there’s a lot of wack unoriginal shit out now. I guess that’s all.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh……
I f**cks with you (nh). Same boat (32y.o.). I remember when hip-hop was more about lyrics, less about gimmicks. Ppl want to try and act as if we’re old because we’re 30+, and just don’t get this generation’s music. How can people say hip-hop is not about gimmicks when you got true lyricists with great songs not getting any type of air play (looking at J. Ortiz, J. Buddens, slaughterhouse crew, Lox, Banks).
We got Waka Flocka Flaming thug, got the New Drake (mix-tape, pre-lil wack wayne Drake was better). I guess we were just spoiled with CNN, Classic Jay, Nas, Mobb Deep, BIG, Tupac, Dr. Dre n Snoop, Lil Kim, Foxy, Black Moon, Tribe, Brand Nubian, Wu-Tang, Rakim, Big PUN….list can go on and on.
These new rapper…..no memorable lyrics….How many rappers have incorporated Rakim’s “clearing my throat rhyme?” And which rhyme from these current “lyrical geniuses” can any one see being so quoted years later? Wayne?…hell I can’t understand half the things he says. Oh, him and his crew always talkign about doing donuts, f’ing the world, getting it pregnant….ok done with the rant! I bet you everyone knows what CREAM means (still quoted in many of today;s lyrics), and that came out in ‘93.
Now go ahead someone call me old, or lost or whatever, but not give me any rhymes that will be immortalized.

Yoprince, I respect that bro. Personal note, I happen to have a son on the way so I’m trying to stack while I have some extra time.
I didn’t stop listening to hip-hop in ‘89, I’ve been fucking with it. And I fully appreciate the trick nostalgia plays on everyone: “oh it was so much better back in….” Still though, Where’s the substance? It’s definitely not in Nicki Minaj prancing behind a screen with her comical silicone ass bulging. And the 99 Red Balloons I just grabbed out of a hat due to her apparent affinity for retooling 80’s shit. But not for nothing, when I was a kid I could contextualize. I knew Diddy and Mase were redoing “The Message,” and older dudes told me that KRS was using ACDC riffs, etc. I guess we just live in a vapid age and the music reflects that. All instant gratification, no depth. I wish it weren’t so though, and I guess that makes me a hater.

I’m not saying there aren’t artists out here doing their thing.
Drake is doing it. Like I said I like mixtape Drake better, new Drake is just too “young-moneyish”…I’ll leave it at that. Kanye, is doing his damn thing (for everyone getting on that age thing, he’s 33). They’re different, not the cookie cutter “I got jewels, guns, don’t need rap tip” (looking at you officer rose) that was going on for a while.
Then you have Nicki, whose mixtape rhymes (some) was much better than this ish she has going on right now.
What the hell does Waka Flame thug say? Where’s the substance, and he’s hot? Lil Wackeezy…can’t understand a damn rhyme he say (and don’t tell me it’s his “deep metaphors”, some of his ish just don’t make sense).
Give me real hip hop. Eminem, I can’t cop his whole album, but that boy got rhymes for days…..(oh and he 38). Who you gonna throw at me Tyga? I’ll take classic cube over him all day.
I’m not trying to turn this into old hip-hop is better than new, young/old thing. I went off on a rant there. I’m just saying a lot of ppl are buying into the hype machines that is surrounding artists.(IMO) Is Nicki talented….yes. But c’mon, the attention she is getting you would swear she is the answer to hip hop’s supposed “demise.” her voices, whole caricature is not appealing (to me). She should try to go back to her mixtape form.
Hip hop is alive and well, but the true lyricists need to get more attention, not these cookie-cutter rappers. The whole young money click sound like lil wackeezy. They all doing donuts with their cars and f’ing the world.
Give me Joel Ortiz, Buddens, Slaughter House, Plies, Cyhi the prince, hell even yelawolf (he gets down), pusha t, malice. I appreciate hip-hop, old and new. It’s all about lyrics, not gimmicks.
I guess we all can agree to disagree. Only thing I think we all agree on is daaaayumn, if Nicki’s booty is real.. that is one big…dayumn! (It was missing during her complex photo shoot, so most probably it’s one of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-1C6QlvHl8 3:22 mark)

The video is nice. Diane Martel is an underrated director. She looks pretty and it’s a different look from her that people want to see.
But both Nicki and Kanye definitely need acting classes and if they ARE taking them, then they need their money back…
And I hate the front of that Foxy Brown Spanish Wave wig!

Second that on the wigs! Also, obvi this song is about her and Safaree, her hypeman/boyfriend. In my head the video starts with her on stage and shadowy bf letting her take the spotlight… (“you let me win, you let me ride” obvi about him letting her enjoy the spotlight) If the video had showed them in the studio…him giving her “advice” on a song that she doesn’t wanna take (“why are you speaking when no one asked you?”), hiding out in her apartment or going incognito w/o wig and sunglasses (“and when they lookin, you let me hide”) the video would’ve been SO much better.
Instead she gave us this vid that doesn’t really say anything…what are they fighting about? doesn’t make sense. And I ain’t finna see millions of “Barbies” throwing around glasses now, oh lord…

Love this video and I like the song.
Listen to the music and stop categorizing it as hip hop and what your definition of that genre should be, maybe you will appreciate the music for its artistic value.
Otherwise, stop listening to her music and looking at her videos if you hate her so much!

Hip hop is what we are here for. If we wanted to view pop, mainstream BS, we would just turn on MTV. Hip Hop does have its own definition and this is not it.

Yes the Chef did make that song with Justin and not Ghostface… And all these pro hip hop heads failed to point that out till you did… Things change people… And crying about how things used to be doesn’t make it any better… When you see one of your favorite rappers growing up (if not dead or in jail) tell them to make better music so it can be heard… Stop bitching on the net and be proactive… This woe is me shit only works for kids… LOL

…but the question still remains. “make better music so it can be heard…” Heard where? Because if this is a statement about mainstream presence then we know better music isn’t guaranteed to get played regardless.

The internet isnt just for the mainstream but also for the talented as well… If your favorite rapper can make a song hot enough for forums such as this one to get hyped about then radio will play it… Labels will then push it then TV will follow right behind that… Hot music will win if you can get enough people saying its hot… Just talking about how the system is messed up on the web isnt proactive… If you hear a song that you like and wont to hear it on the radio get a piece of paper if you are in school or have a job get as many people as you can to sign that paper mail it to your radio station with a note stating you wish to have this played… If your told no then bitch and moan on here about how this music sucks… But until then blame yourself for what is on the radio… Because at the end of the day the masses love this music and fully support it while you spend time bashing it only on the block and internet… BE PROACTIVE HOMIE…

YO like busta rhymes said back in 95′ “there’s only five years left”….5 years left until the market started to get flooded with mind controlled, and not heart felt hip hop!!!!!! A new millennium, a new way to make a buck in hip hop. Honestly I cant knock anyone tryin to make money from hip hop! Like what? You expect artists to stay dirt poor and bumbed out? If nicki song sells all around the world, which it will, and it sells on Z100, and whatever station and she get that shine, good for her!!! The song is not wack! It’s a good look for her. Do ya thing Girl….
NOW WHAT HAD ME LAUGHIN MY ASS THE FUCK OFF is this video @42 seconds when she begged him to stay, right after she tried to bug out on him…..classic!

i’m sick of people saying raekwon sold out. that justin song was already in existence. they just added a few verses and changed the beat. who cares? its pretty much a beiber sample really. what’s the big deal?
justin beiber isn’t a terrible singer. yeah he is “pop” but he’s not an exploit. he’s just making music.
now about this video it’s booty and mainstream. it wouldn’t be so bad if she was doing this type of material from the jump because then i wouldn’t care nor would alot of people. she’s just corny for selling out. originating as a “hip hop” artist and then going all the way left with it. booooo nicki! you are not certified!

Question. At this point, how many of y’all are really looking to Nikki to be the torch bearer for “Hip Hop”???
Shes a talented pop artist now. We should all know better then to expect an apple to taste like an orange. Jean Grae is still out there getting busy. Eternia is out there getting busy. Unless we just love to talk about what we don’t like then we aren’t seeing anything we dont know is flawed already.

“Pull up in the monster
Automobile gangster
With a bad b-tch that came from Sri Lanka
Yeah I’m in that Tonka, colour of Willy Wonka
You could be the King but watch the Queen conquer
Ok first things first I’ll eat your brains
Then I’mma start rocking gold teeth and fangs”
next
I’m in the collard green 6, cornbread in the guts.
Got da Halloween kicks trick or treatin the clutch.
Come on nigga is you trickin or what?
Flo-fl-flow tighter than a dick in the butt.
Just hopped off da plane, came back from Vancouv’
Little white tee, some boobs, and bamboo.
White girls tell me, “hey Nicki, your camp rules.
Is that why you get more head than shampoos?
i mean i got moore but dont wanna flood this forum nicki is nice with da flow she is makin money and hittin every aspect to get paid aint nothing wrong wit her doin a song wit willo smith to whip her hair back and forth but its the end of the world for luda to do a justin bieber song WTF its music appreciate it if u dont like move on to the next one dont hate or dislike someone because they made it out the ghetto or hood and wanna get that CREAM lets be proud of our black folk makin this money in positive ways
