New Video: Lupe Fiasco “Solar Midnite” off the New Moon soundtrack (lol)

I’m just giggling because of the footage of the ultra-cheesy movie (that I saw at the midnight opening show….what?) (thanks for the speedy rip, Dre/Nahright)

How come Lupe could do a wack ass rock song and not get critized but when Wayne does it everyone says its wack?
Autotune?
No one likes Wayne anymore?
All i’m saying is prom queen/revolver > solar midnite.

Prom Queen was a generic pos with cliched lyrics. This song actually has some character and a sound that couldn’t instantly be attributed to some corny early to mid 2000’s rock band. Wayne is great when he’s rapping, though.

cmon guys. let’s not be pots and call a kettle black.
This song is shit. just like Wayne’s rock song was. I’m not into rock but I usually know a good rock song when I hear it.
And f*ck what you thought, but Lupe and Wayne target roughly the same demographic, except Wayne has a much larger share. And Lupe’s fanbase are those who seek an alternative to straight pop but aren’t really hip hop heads anyway. Lupe has always had a poppish vibe to his music.
Bottom line, I could totally imagine Lupe doing a song like this. It didn’t come out of nowhere. if Nas did it, then I’d like be like ‘wtf.’ But from Lupe, it’s no surprise.

Well, I’m very into rock, and from just a cursory listen I can hear that S.M. is superior to Prom Queen in terms of instrumentation. It has a nice, heavy bassline, and hiphop-ish drums for Lupe to ride on. The guitar riff is pretty negligible on the verses, but it comes in on the chorus nicely. That being said, it’s not genius. Really, I just like the chorus and the verses. With Prom Queen, though, it felt as if there was no real effort put into the composition of the song. It’s a typical power cord progression, with lamentable drums. Add onto it the horrible lyrics, and you’ve got a shit storm as far as rock goes. I love Wayne’s dedication and his will to go farther, but he needs to get a good band and head back to the lab.
I agree with your third paragraph largely, although I wouldn’t go as far as to generalize an entire fanbase. I’m a pretty big Lupe fan, but I’d like to think I have a love of hip hop that goes deep then casual.

I know, right…when I heard Lupe might be on the soundtrack I was kinda excited cuz I didn’t know what to expect. When I finally got the thing and saw he wasn’t on I was disappointed… The New Moon soundtrack is tite tho…I saw the movie with a billion teenage girls and it was… interesting….

I can see Lupe doing a rock track.
I can’t see Lil’ Wayne doing one.
But anywho, I like this song. It’s way better then annoying prom queen.
