New Nas “N.-.-.-.-.R (The slave and the master)”: the song title is all that remains

Well as you’ve probably heard, Nas has reconsidered his previous album title and decided to just name his album Nas. In one fell swoop, we’ve gone from one of the most controversial album titles of all time, to one of the most overused banal uninspired titles of all time (the eponymous title).
Wow, well that sure does lessen the pressure on an album to be great. Now, lowered expectations can be a great thing. It leaves room for us to be impressed**. But after all that talk of disarming the word, and not caring about the effect on sales, and the mission to spark debate…its hard not to feel a bit scammed. “Hey, lets talk about race and class and generation gaps! But….uh…there’s a timer on that debate, and it runs out about a month before my album release. Alrighty?”
Hey, it’s good to be realistic about the financial repercussions of your title, but weren’t there ways to get around that? Packaging for Walmart and Target that just say “N”? Limited edition copies with the full slur for the collectors?
Last week, I heard from an insider that Nas was changing his album title from N—-r to ___. As in, the album would be completely untitled. Which would probably be confusing, for alphabetical purposes. But I liked that idea better because at least it makes the title into a kind of racist in the room. We all know what the album is really called, but its nowhere to be found on the cover.
Instead, its now called Nas. Just like that first Ashanti album. Or that only Diamond Shell album. (And for the record, new artists have a better excuse ’cause they need to brand themselves. Anything after that and you’re just being lazy.)
Ok, now that I’ve vented, I’m still looking forward to Nas’s Nas (ugh), and I’m pretty sure there will be flashes of brilliance there. I’m also really looking forward to seeing the upcoming “Be a N—- too” video. So, lemme shut up, here’s that new Nas song….
Nas “N.-.-.-.-.R (The slave and the master)”
(thanks to Marvin and Legend for the links)
UPDATE:
Well, now Nas has released a statement about the album title change, and there are reports that, as I mention above, the real new title is no title at all. Untitled.
“It’s important to me that this album gets to the fans,” Nas told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “It’s been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It’s that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it.”
And just to add one more curveball into the mix….TMZ is reporting that they saw Nas in LA last night and he insisted, the album title is still “N—-r.”
hmmm…..fuzzy math.
**(I use this tactic before walking into the theater to watch any big budget film. Never works with anything by that Shamalyan guy though. There’s no expectation low enough not to get pissed off by his crap.)

He shoulda just released it as “N—-r”. Then it’s up to the individual whether they interpret it as “Nigger” or “Nasir”.

I think Nas is a clever dude call his album “Nas”. He knew that that first outrageous title was too much controversial. Everyone would be against him. Plus, there’s no need to bring more shame on our black people.
Let the fool and the ignorant names us whatever he want to call but don’t do it yourself. You’re more intelligent than that. I’m not a nigger, you’re neither.

LET ME TELL U SOMETHING THE ORIGINAL TITLE “NIGGER” WAS A CRY TO RESURECT A DYING CAREER… NAS NEEDED THAT CONTROVERSIAL TITLE TO SPARK INTREST… THAT SONG THATS OUT NOW IS GARBAGE…… “SURVIVING THE TIMES” IS PROB HIS BEST SONG SINCE ILLMATIC… HE DOESN’T HAVE A EAR BEATS AND HIS TOPICS ARE OFTEN DATED… HE ALWAYS FALLS SHORT TO REINVENTING HIMSELF… AND I KNOW THERE IS A TON OF NAS DICK RIDERS WHO DISAGREE… BUT TRUST ME … I LOVE TO GET ANOTHER ILLMATIC… BUT THE FIRE IS GONE… I HONESTLY BELIEVE THIS IS HIS LAST SHOT AT MAJOR RECORD LABEL RELEASE… OH WELL THERE IS ALWAYS KOCH

yeah the name change seems pointless since we know what it was supposed to be called anyway. and people who were scared of an album that was supposed to be called n***** will still be scared of its contents. regardless, nas albums aren’t for everyone. his following isn’t kanye or jay-z-sized anymore, but his fans are diehard. his music is far from harmless fun, which not everyone can appreciate.
whatever, i’m a nas head for life.

Couldn’t he just like make a double cover booklet, have the side thats going to show when it’s on the shelves, and when you open it, it could have the title on the inside.
Or have the letter N on the front, then when you open up the booklet all the other letters show on each page spelling it out.

CONCERNING THE TITLE
*******
Nas said it’s going to be untitled which I prefer over a self-titled LP because we can always reference it as “the album previously known as Nigger.” Ironically, I just read on TMZ that Nas is still going to call the album “Nigger.”
At this point though, I feel conflicted. (1) I feel like it’s pretty wack that an album that’s going to be anti-government and anti-corporate will yield to those very pressures. Yet at the same time I almost don’t care anymore. I just want music.
CONCERNING THE SONG
*******
I like it. The beat is nice and lyrically it is good enough. Nice to hear Nas on topic but it is still not powerful enough (I really hate putting these expectations on him because it has existed throughout his whole career. But nothing is hitting me like “What Goes Around” off of Stillmatic).
I read elsewhere that this would make a really nice intro and if it is not used for that purpose, he needs to go back into the studio to put some more emphasis in his lyrics.
I really wish I could be part of the creative process of this album.

I dont see the big deal .Many artist have use the word in there book titles and song title or lyrics black and white .Im sure it was a little bit of both to get a buzz and to address an issue .

I miss those days when Onyx got away with BacDaFucUp and NWA got away with Niggaz4Life by spelling it backwards. Times have obviously changed.
In hindsight, it doesn’t seem to have been a great strategy to create all this hype and buzz over the N*gger album so long before it’s release.
In this day and age, the media backlash and corporate pressure could have been anticipated and perhaps the best approach would have been not to bring so much attention to the title so long before the album came out. Perhaps the name should have been kept quiet until just before a confirmed release date so that there wouldn’t be time for the backlash and pressure to change the name. Before you know it, the album is in stores. The bulk of the backlash and pressure happens after the album drops – creating mainstream publicity, controversy and curiosity boosting sales. The demand to change the name would raise demand for the already-pressed CDs. It could have been huge.
I can forgive Nas for backing down. I just want another classic album from him before he retires.
INFO – What’s wrong with M. Knight Shyamalan? With the exception of his last two films (which I haven’t seen), I love his movies.

If you look at the big picture Nas has made a smart move. When everybody was tense because white people were using the N Word Nas came out and reclaimed that shit.
The Music better be quality. At least Nas stepped up to address an issue that was/is affecting the black community.
Therefore, much love and respect for dude when the album drops am 100% going to buy it, am not even going to download it get it and listen to it from start to finish, because I have high expectations for 1 of the most controversial albums in hip-hop.
If its trash am just gonna take it back to the shop!

Hip Hop Bloggers Critique Nas’ Album Title Switch…
I previously mentioned that Nah Right’s Eskay was rather disappointed by Nas’ bait-and-switch tactics regarding the title of his upcoming album but it looks like a lot of bloggers are reacting so let’s what they have to say! Nah Right: It’s not re…

couldent agree with you more…i’m a big nas fan. since it aint hard to tell i been calling him the illest of all time. it just felt like he’s been trying harder to get that jay fame…that acclaim to be the true mc superstar. i feel like this was all a plan he had. just to get noticed alot like the whole hiphop is dead but on an even grander scale. i feel like it’s all about the money at this point in his career. he knows he’s got just a few more liters in the tank before he just runs dry so this is his chance to get a lil more cake. i wonder if he even really cares anymore about how good his music is.

Illseed is saying that anyone who posted this song with the “Slave and Master” part on the end ripped in from allhiphop because he added that part of it.
Direct Quote:
“I love how everybody is calling Nas’s song “N.I.*.*.*.R. (The Slave and the Master).” Why? Because I made up the “Slave and The Master” part! When I was commanded to update the site/rumors with this AllHipHop.com exclusive, I decided to be creative since I hate the N-word so much. I decided to add “The Slave and The Master” in parenthesis to [re]define the the song’s title. I was able to see all the people that ripped it from AHH. No hate. That’s the net, but I did think it was quite funny to see all the people on the site at such a late hour.”

lowered expectations and lower standards give us the mainstream hip hop we have today. so no, lower standards are not good.

The content of the album remains and is shown in the songs that have leaked from the album. So just because he changed the title (or had it changed for him) after MONTHS of wanting it to stick, it doesnt take away the theme of the album and what he hopes to achieve and/or express personally through the songs.
No artist in Hip Hop gets scrutinized more than he does.
