That Biggie line was nervous, plain and simple. There is certain things you just dont say.
Since he came out Jay has had an inferiority complex and he shows it with lines like that. Also “If i aint better than Big, Im the closest one…”. Real Kings shouldnt have to announce that their a king, people should already know. Jordan dont go walking around saying “Im the greatest ever”. Jay might not see it, but all of his lacksidasical victory lap rhymes he has been relying on for the last 6 years is messing up his legacy.

Speaking of Jordan……. Jordan’s acceptance speech into the Hall of Fame showed his inferiority complex as well… Tarnished his legacy a bit to many.
Jay killed this verse… But I do agree, there have been a few times where it may not necessarily have been in bad taste, but he’s said BIG’s name in ways I don’t think others would have, about a deceased friend.

I’m Not hating on trap music either… The Clipse have built a whole career rapping about the coke game with clever metaphorical rhyme schemes that make a cliche seem original. Hova is the King, No doubt. I just think the had a bad game on this one… He probably feels the same way.

If your initial claim was that the lyric went over my head, I’m sure you can find those (coke) references on your own… “I used to cop Rob Base, Turn it into Easy Rock” ?”Give fiends the Ghost Face”? there’s a couple more but the verse is only like 10 bars anyway. There’s a possibility that Jay is talking about something else but that’s what I got from it. I also understand that he resolves his drug ambitions at the end of the lyric when hew quotes a Kane song “I get the Job Done” and then says he put the caine down. But I feel like we’ve heard the rehabilitated crack dealer motif before in rhymes, so that resolution doesn’t really do alot for me. I know I’m holding hov to a certain standard but that’s because I respect him. I’m not really going in on Hov. Its just that there are alot of rappers that I admire who can’t seem to find anything new to talk about after years of being in the game. I think that alot of them could and should be doing better lyrically, at this stage. If not, they should clear path and pass the torch to the next school of emcees… (I’m not a rapper by the way.) Also As far as the BIG line, I believe Hov actually felt like he was paying his homie incredible homage. I don’t believe Jay Z has an inferiority complex as others have posted. He’s one of the geniuses of our time and very few rappers are legitimate competition for him. So its like being a pro at a sport that no one else can play, which must be lonely. So he often creates competitors arbitrarily, as when he pays competitive homage to B.I.G and reaches out to other lonely geniuses like Nas, despite the fact that they were at odds…P.S. I am here to see and be open other peoples views, but I’m not really here to start any blog beef.
