New Music: Jay-Z “Venus vs. Mars” (produced by Timbaland*)

Jay-Z “Venus vs. Mars” (Produced by Timbaland) (tagged)
I like this beat best in comparison to the other Timbaland-Hov leaks “Off That,” and “Reminder.”
According to my NMC goonies who had the scoop, via Shoot 5 Ent… this song and other exclusives will be on a mixtape called The Layout.
*that’s 3 from Miami.
UPDATE: I think its a wrap for the Hov leaks…But in related news, XXL has teased their upcoming Jay issue with this cover and feature excerpts…
“But when I say I’m the best, I don’t say that outta my ass. I say that with all my stats behind me. I put that against anybody. I mean anybody. I really believe that… I believe in a lot of things.
I believe that ‘SportsCenter’ is the best thing on TV. I shouldn’t have to prove it. But I do have these stats to prove it. I’m talking about real run. I’m not talking about years off. I’m talking about straight—boom, boom, boom—back to back. We’re not talking about heritage acts either. We’re not talking about respect what I’ve done. I’m talking No. 1 [albums] 10 times. The Beatles is the only one [to have more
No. 1 albums]. They got 19, and if I get a surge of creativity, I could make nine albums next year.”

None of the new Jay-Z songs are that impressive. This song doesn’t change my perspective. Average stuff. I expect better. Therefore I will not be buying this album. This album is NOT worth my hard-earned money.

I think people expect too much from Jay.
Matter of fact, nobody in this game is releasing consistant materiel, so we fans out there are just to demanding with Jay.
This song is good, lyrics are tight, the beat is nice, the hook is catchy… It’s my opinion but I’m trying to be the most impartial as possible.

Nas does not put out consistent material. Where did you get that from and based on his catologue, what would make you say that? You don’t remember, “I Am,” “Nastradamus,” “Street Disciple” “Hip Hop Is Dead?” All of those were garbage minus “Hip Hop Is Dead” and that album was decent at best.

I Am was one of Nas’ best album according to who? The same album with “Dr. Knockboots” and “K.I.S.S.I.N.G.” on it? According to every publication at that time, The Source, XXL, and Vibe, “I AM” was a horrible Nas album, not to mention that is public opinion too. If you liked it so be it, but it definitley isn’t nearly one of his best bodies of work and doesn’t compare at all to Illmatic, It Was Written, or Untitled. As far as QB, he’s probably just young and only knows Nas from Hip Hop is Dead and on.

this generic blanket statement is not something i subscribe to. i was gonna leave this to grown men to bash it out, but i think this is a discussion for all fans, and i’m a big nas fan…i put him over biggie because although i really like biggie i don’t listen to a lot of his records like some people in my house, but i listen to nas all the time. to say nas puts out consistent material is like saying hove is the greatest ever. it’s actually an insult to the dude because even he knows when he’s putting things on a record, that he might have worked hard on, that shouldn’t be in a collection to be released. i think he is one of the best lyricists i’ve heard in my life without having to go in back catalogue and listen to some krs 1, rakim, etc…but to say that nas comes with it CONSISTENTLY, as in like, all the time…man i would just say i disagree with what you saying. sorry.

oh and nas>jay z. i’ve been listening to nas since i was 7 years old. my oldest brother got illmatic and although he would play it when our parents were working 24/7, i would steal it from him and listen to it. i used to sleep to nas. i learned how to sing the lyrics on illmatic. i was basically that little girl on the playground going around quoting nas to my peers and they were like what is wrong with this girl. so yeah i’ve been growing up with nas and he’s really high up on my list of rappers and creative people in general. i draw, paint, write, to nas. if you don’t know i am a nas stan. anytime.

Mertz, it’s okay to be a huge fan of someone. I’m a huge fan of Rakim, KRS-One, James Brown, John Coltrane, and there are many more. That’s not the point. I think the word to describe Nas is Longevity. He’s been around since 94, had some great material, some good material, some mediocre material, and some bad material. Putting Nas above BIG to me isn’t a big deal because unfortunately, BIG wasn’t around long enough to cement that GOAT title. 2 albums to me wasn’t enough. Although, Jay is in the conversation of GOAT. May be, may not be, but he’s definitley int he conversation and truth be told, he’s done ALOT for the rap game. I think Nas is in the conversation as well. The only problem I have with Nas is he is inconsistent when it comes to putting out good material. Jay is very consistent at doing that.

yeah truine i see what you’re saying really. jay z has more singles than nas does, and the people flock to him more than nas, and i guess i have to give people some credit because they wouldn’t like something if it wasn’t good. it makes me a little sad that more people do not pick up a nas record and give it a listen because i think everyone can learn something from the dude, but i also agree that saying the man is consistent is kinda disingenuous…especially when people are comparing him to jay z and you are looking at numbers and production and all that…lyrically i would like to argue in nas’s favour, but i can’t blind myself to him being a genuis writer and not a brilliant communicator in all aspects of the music. i think a lot of people sleeping on nas…but if they were i wouldn’t have to say that people need to give the dude a chance just because he’s not to everyone’s taste or mainstream enough. oh well. to each their own. but i’m going to put it out there and say i have every nas record and in my opinion he’s better than jay z. he needs to work more on this production, and maybe concrete concepts and the entirety of a collection of records, but aside from that i can create listening to nas, whereas i can’t do that listening to jay z. i can dance to jay z, whereas i can’t dance to nas. people like different things.

Triune, stop acting like a retard. “KISSING”? Jay-Z has pop songs on ALL of his albums including Blueprint that had “Hola Hoveto”, “Girls” and a bunch of other crap, but yet people call that a classic. There is a double standard that Jay-Z stans have created. Jay-Z is allowed to have pop music on every album, but if Nas has one or two songs, his album sucks and he’s the worst. Get off Jay-Z’s dick. No one cares what those mags say. Listen to the album yourself and form your own opinions. And I’m not young. I’ve been listening to Nas since Illmatic, and I’ve heard every album he’s put out since. Nas’s albums are of higher quality then Jay-Z. You can’t compare a lyrical, creative rapper with a pop star who only talks about himself and how great he is in his rhymes. Jay has some good tracks, but he’s not fucking with Nasir.

when nas tries to make a pop song the results are usually disastrous.
When jay does it he fully commits. I means compare kissing to “give it to me”…u see the difference.
I like them both. but u can’t be serious and say nas is more consistent than jay. quality or quantity wise.

dude u just made some good points,I am was a dope album, and since most of these rap fans are so infatuated with sales,it debuted on no 1 on billboard 200 with 500,000 records sold and has reached multiplatinum status.cos Nas drops a few pop oriented song dnt mean shit.u hear stuff lik he fell off or sold out when he drops like 1 or 2 singles and sells millions of records. But when Jay does d same thing, his stans say he d king.its a fact jay got way more pop records than nas cos he turned pop immediatly after RD and yet he nevver fell off.wats up with dat.Nas has sold over 20 million records till date without selling his soul lik Jay.When Big and Pac were alive n selling million Nas was doing d same too yet he fell off.wat d fuck is dat? When he drops a street single n sells just a milli,u hear stuff like he is not relevant cos he dnt sell records.wat d fuck is dat?Bp3 commin soon n has run this town as d 1st single which is a wack pop song, but u still hear his stans say he king n his bringing bak hiphop.wat d fuck is dat?nuff said.

Nas’ albums are boring nowadays.’I am’ was his turning point…it was terrible. It was not the fact that he had pop songs on there.it was the fact that the songs were jus plain trash.“KISSING”? that song was so lame, i wasted £15($30) on that album and it was let down, big time.I think it was jayz’ beatz that helped him become a bigger artist in the end.

First off [edit], Pop songs aren’t bad, BAD SONGS are bad! I don’t give a fuck whether or not it’s a record about females or not, if it’s good it’s good. Secondly, I didn’t mention Jay one time. You made a lame ass comment that was wrong, and now you wanna catch feelings. You obviously haven’t been listening to Nas since Illmatic to say that no one cared about The Source’s reveiws at that time. They were the Hip Hop Bibile back then. Remember? Probably not because your probably 16 years old and a dumb ass at that. Just to touch on Jay for the FIRST TIME, to say that Nas’ catologue is better than Jay’s is like saying the Dallas Mavericks are a better franchise than Los Angeles Lakers. It just isn’t true and in every faccet of performance, Jay’s albums have been better than Nas’ period. There are two things that Nas has done better than Jay, “Ether” and “Illmatic”, and after that, the ball stops. If you’ve been listening to Nas since Illmatic then you know he was and is a huge let down. [edit]

I’m a Nas fan and I back that up with numerous concerts I’ve gone to and I’ve purchased all the albums UNFORTUNATELY! so let me say it as plain as jane Nas’s albums in the last 10 years have been trash every single one of them he’s good for a few singles that get you all excited maybe this is the next illmatic or I’ll even take It was Written but then the reality hits and all we get is nastradamus and god’s son streets disciple even hip hop is dead & I am and all the rest all trash as whole albums. Not one cohesive album in the mix god forbid the man learn how to write a fucking hook too and don’t come to me with that back pack bull shit it’s about the lyrics not the hook your wrong its about a whole song lyrics beats and hook and Nas recently can only manage 1/3rd of the equation which is why his success will never meet his talent level. and don’t come to me with that I’m on some hate bullshit cause you all know I’m right we all go to see Nas if we do go to the shows or we all listen to Nas albums to hear the the songs on illmatitic, maybe alittle if i ruled the world and then nas is llike and maybe 2 other songs nothing he’s done recently has any real impact or lasting power like I said in another post his album titles are now more interesting then his albums Hip-Hop is dead, the Untitled(Nigger) album titles are more talked about then what’s actually on those albums.

You guys have got to be joking me about Nas. Firstly, Nas’ last album was his most poignant. He stayed on track and delivered a message that needed to be talked about even though he knew he was goin against the grain.
What about God’s son and Lost tapes??
Both albums were bangin
True hiphop is dead wasn’t a great album, but it wasn’t garbage. I’m LOL at “nothing he’s done recently had any impact” because it was him talking about Hiphop being dead that got every rappers panties in a bunch and dudes started steppin their game up. WTF r u guys talking about?
And are u clowns serious saying “I am” was a garbage album, umm are you forgetting about tracks like, “nas is like,” “hate me now” NY state of mind 2, “ghetto prisoners,’ “We will survive,” “undying love,”
You must be out of your mind, not many rappers can put that much heat onto one album
Get a clue hatas!!

You are completely right except for Nas’ I AM album. The songs you names were good songs, but did you not remmeber that the album had 18 songs on it? 6/18 is 33% fam. That does not make for a good or even decent album. That’s a bad album period! Plus can we be real for once, Dr. Knockboots and KISSING were absolutely terrible songs and lets not forget Nas in the video with a shiny suit in one scene and a fur suit in another next to Puff trying to be who he wasn’t. That’s a big reason why people didn’t like him at this period of time too. Don’t forget!!

I would have to disagree about Dr knockboots and Kissing. But I understand your point, I just don’t feel that the other songs were awful. I think what happens is that when Jay and Nas and Em drrop average songs, we call them wack because we have such high expectations. But its almost impossible to keep up that high level of quality product for over 10-15 years. If anyone one has come close, its these three.

i might agree with some of your points but “it wasn’t until nas started about hip hop being dead that people started talking about it”…definately made me say wow. people have been saying hip hop is dead for as long as i can remember and nas was one of the voices there. he didn’t do it to be fashionable or in the times or whatever but he said what he felt, but he’s not the only one. anyways.

3 average produced songs by timbo, 3 average songs lyrically. Let me also note that had this guy had the production that Cam’ron had on crime pays he would suck even worse. After seeing the run down of producers on this album its a completely safe album! he has big name porducers on every single track and is not taking a chance and swinging for the fences with none.
oh ps. someone plz tell timbaland that these days he’s better off sticking to making beats for nelly fortado and justin

Silence!
Takeover>Ether. He bodied 3 or more Hip Hop acts in that song. Nas only went in on one. Jay-Z broke down Nas’ career as if he were Wikipedia himself. Ether sounds opinionated. Takeover sounds more fact oriented.
Ether>Super Ugly. A rushed come back that CLEARLY after Takeover, wasn’t needed. The reason why many think Nas won.

thanks info. i didn’t even have to get far into this before i knew i liked it and that was even before i heard the vocals or listened to the lyrics. i like the slow temple cripple beat…kinda like hitting two drumsticks together. i like that better than the other ones i heard on this site recently. and i agree with him. I LOVE SPORTS CENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that’s one of the only things i love about espn, so espn although i watch you a lot and i may hate you for supporting bullriding, golf, and all other sorts of nonsense let it be known that i ride and die by sports center in all the locales and all the different languages.
lol at the pic info.
the dude posting under realist, comment had me in stiches. man. read a little.
why did he get timbaland producing for him. if this is all i have to look forward to for this album i do not give a f’ and i am not going to buy this. it would have been better if they hadn’t leaked nothing so i could indulge in my ignorance.
i wonder if he listens to a lot of beatles interviews when they were talking about why they were playing so many shows and recording so much material. good info to be found in some of those interviews which are hilarious once you also realize how much the beatles stole from other artists. oh well i am one myself so i know it’s hard to be original in your art without learning from something first.
when’s this issue coming out?

i just read the D-O-double’s comments below your’s and from reading your comment in the Em>Drake>weezy>yeezy thread i know you have a good head on you. do you think we, people, fans, music lovers, hip hop heads, whatever people calling themeselves, etc…do you think we’re spoiled? or that we expect too much or not enough?
Reply
Tochi Reply:
August 26th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Definitely not enough. The game has obviously been watered down, to the point where nobody knows what to expect. There are no real standards in this hip hop shit anymore. If you don’t like a track, even if your reason is valid, you’re a hater. Everybody wants to belong. Which is SO not hip hop. Hip hop’s about being your own person and celebrating self. It’s about community vibes, expressing real stuff.
It’s fairly obvious to anyone who’s been listening to hip hop that the game is garbage right now.
The talent level, the production, the rhymes, etc have dropped considerably, thus lowering our standards. Let’s be real – this song is quite garbage compared to Jay’s good material or even Timbaland’s good beat material.
But because, in 2009, we deal with so much mediocrity on a daily basis, we’ll accept anything that’s a little above wack, even if it’s super mediocre.
People like me though get branded as ‘haters.’ Even though I’m not the one who gave hip hop standards. Hip hop itself used to have standards. I’ve been used to quality upon quality record, so for me to just accept any half-assed track is way too hard.
I hope that answers your question. I could say a lot more, but my post is long already.
mertz Reply:
August 27th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
lol naw. unlike some people my age with the short attention spans, unless it’s for some reality tv or video games (not hating. i don’t game (i’m a sega kid)) or whatever people’s indulgences are (mines books and music), i read and i ask a lot of questions. so thanks for answering all of mine pretty well. i was thinking about this too because sometimes i feel like i’m being too hard, critiquing everything, never happy with what’s out there or whatever, but that doesn’t make me a hater. trust me i know when i’m hating and i’m not reasoning things out, and i can do that effortlessly, but most of the time when i’m saying what i think, i give a lot of thought to my thoughts. i don’t just go and say something just for the sake of saying it. anyways so i agree with what you were saying in the middle portion about how times have changed and how hip hop used to be it’s own self check module. it’s always been about a community to me, and even when i don’t fit in, the music is what ties me in to the fabric. you making me nostalgic and i’m remembering why i need to keep volunteering at my local urban hip hop festivals, helping out, because you know hip hop has given me a lot, so the best i can do is participate and return the favours. i view critique as something positive that can be used or not used for improvement. that’s the way i always learned so i have no problem with critiques…i do have problems with people who just open their mouths and talk without thinking.
and you know what, while i was listening to this tune i was relieved that it was alright, but i also thought please tell me there’s gonna be something better on the record because i am really not feeling this tune. as is i don’t think i will optionally play this for me to hear again.
oh and about the ear for hip hop now and then, about the quality. i agree with this but i don’t think it’s all garbage. there’s some good things out there, but it just means as music fans, we just have to dig deeper and harder. you know it might not be the typical or mainstream and all that but there are some young dudes and even old heads who are and have been doing their thing regardless of the $ or sales. you know somethings not right when the $$$ is all that’s talking. i miss a lot, the time when i used to learn from hip hop. i don’t think i’ve given up on it, and i hear most of what’s on the radio, but i actually stopped letting hip hop be the focus. i actually probably listen to a lot more old things than i do new. i mean i can understand the “i’m a jerk” song but doesn’t mean i’m gonna be playing that for years. now everything and anything can be hip hop. oh well.

Bottom line is this.. Hov still can’t be compared to anyone in the game now but himself, he’s shown growth from day one and haters hated it since In my lifetime vol 1! He’s on top of the game and he basically does and says whatever he feels at this point. Not many rappers in the game now can do that. We’ll probably appreciate em more when he’s gone but some of the hate out here is ridiculous… Name 5 artist putting out better music right now?

5 might be alot, but I can name Ghostface right off the top of my head.
His “Baby” track is way better than ANYTHING I’ve heard off Blueprint 3.
except for maybe Jockin JayZ, but that wasn’t for BP3.
Raekwon’s been dropping mixtape records that are way better than anything Jay’s dropped in the last 2 years or so. Listen to “Kids That Rich” or “Blue Eagles” (aka “Flawless Crowns”) or “Olympus”
Method Man and Redman’s “Blackout” wasn’t great by any means, but there are records on there that are way better than anything from BP3 so far. Check “This iz 4 My Smokers”. Even for a pop record, “Hey Zulu” kills DOA, Run This Garbage, etc.
so that’s 4….

QUESTION…IS JAYZ A NARCISSIST???
According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), narcissism is defined as “a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy.”
The narcissist is described as turning inward for gratification rather than depending on others and as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power, and prestige. Narcissistic personality disorder is closely linked to self-centeredness. It is also colloquially referred to as “the God complex.”
True narcissists (like Barack Obama, Jay Z, Jermaine Dupri and Sean Combs, for example) will display 5 or more of the following behaviors and character traits:
•Has a grandiose sense of self-importance
•Requires excessive admiration
•Has a sense of entitlement
•Is interpersonally exploitative
•Lacks empathy
•Is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
•Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
•Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty or ideal love (megalomania)
•Believes they are “special” and can only be understood by, or should associate with, people (or institutions) who are also “special” or of high status
What do you say…Does Jay-Z fit the criteria?

Jay goes in
Hov the black berry bold,
Shorty is the side kick,
She used to have a man,
I used to have a side chick,
Shorty got wind,
I had to blow the chick off
She got rid of him,
They both took the sh*t hard,
Shorty played the piano,
Me I played with white keys,
Shorty from the south,
Oh I think she like me,
Shorty like Pac
Me big pappa,
Screaming hit em up,
Im screaming who shot ya,
Im on that red wine shorty like white
Same ish different toilet,
We both getting nice
Me im from the apple,
Which means im a mac,
She’s a PC she lives in my lap,
VS 2
Whether black or white
We both like mike
We both like Jordan
We both feel Nike
Finished my breakfast
Shorty is about to lunch
Yeah we both eating its better than brunch
Shorty like pepsi
Me im the c0k3 man
Body like a coke bottle,
I crush it like a coke can,
Started at the window,
Ended in the back of hall,
The ying to my yang
I skeet skeet off
….
Vs3
Thought shorty was the truth
Found out she was a cheater
we was supposed to takeover
I caught her bumpin ether
I thought shorty like mike,
Found out she like prince
Thought she was Adrienne
Its been rocky ever since
My dollars were down
She left me for some euros
Took my whole flavor
I called her coke zero
She wants MVP like kobe and shaq
Left me for the heat
We would win it back to back
Said I party too much
Shorty got fed up
Shorty got Brittney shaved her whole head up
We used to make out
Kissing each others face off
For the ponzi scheme
Damn shorty just made off

It was a few steps above those other leaked songs. Especially that Drake feature.
The ENTIRE first verse flowed so properly.

Let’s see who has had the better career (fuck sales)
Let’s go album for album
Just so you know… this is my opinion
————
Hov
Reasonable Doubt (5 mics. Undeniable classic. One of the top 5 or 6 best hip hop albums ever created)
Vol. 1 [ 4 mics. Some great songs (i.e. “Streets is Watching” and “Where I’m from”) and some bad ones (i.e. Sunshine). All in all, the good out weighed the bad and there are some incredible displays of word play on this joint]
Vol. 2 (3.5 mics. Too commercial for hood niggas. I aint like it at all. “It Was all Good Just a Week Ago” is a definitely classic track, however)
Vol. 3 ( 4.25 mics. This is the best “Volume” album from the trilogy. Tracks like “Dope Man” and “So Ghetto” are classics in the hood. The one bad tack would be the joint he had with mariah)
Dynasty ( 4 mics. Dope album. More like a Roca fella complilation than a solo. But Jigga was on most of the tracks spiitin’ some hard shit. Man, even Bleek had some hot versus. Damn. No complaints.)
Blueprint 1 (5 mics. Another undeniable classic. Best hip hop album of the 21st century)
Blueprint 2 (3 mics. I think this album is terrible overall. If he would have taken the 12 best songs (such as “Hovi Baby”) and condensed it in to one album it would have easily gone up a whole mic. In the end, too much filler tracks)
Black Album (4 mics. A pretty good album. Overrated? Yes. Good? Absolutely. A nice comeback after that BP2 garbage)
Kingdom Come (1 mic. I don’t care how you slice it… this shit is garbage. Fuck that “oh, he’s on his grown man shit.” It’s coaster material. I actually have my mug on the KG CD as we speak. I’m sending messages)
American Gangster (4.25 mics. This is a dope album. There are a lot of good joints on here. In the end, it is nowhere near a classic. People need to calm down with that classic talk. However, this is a solid entry into his catalog. The American Godfather by DJ SKEE is even better1)
Blueprint 3 (???)
—————–
Nas
Illmatic (5 mics. One of the best hip hop albums ever)
It Was Written (5 mics. Many people say im crazy for rating this 5 mics but this album is so fucking sick. Break out yoru CD right now and tell me if Im wrong. This album is unbelievable. Before you young motherfuckers say anything, do a little research first)
I Am (3.5 mics. A lot of good joints (“Nas is Like”) and some mediocre/bad joints. He could have done much better. But at least he aint lay a brick on niggas)
Nastradamus (2 mics. I think that this is Nas’ worst album. This shit is just terrible. Yes, there are several incredible songs on there but the majority of the tracks are lame attempts at being creative. I think Nas was spaced out on some dust when recording this shit)
Stillmatic (4 mics. Boderline classic? Maybe. But this is certainly not a 5 mic album. It’s fire… but it aint 5 mics. That would mean it’s on the same level as Illmatic and It Was Written. No fucking way!!)
Godson (3 mics. I didn’t like this album. I tried everything I could to like it but I just couldn’t listen to it without skipping numerous tracks)
Street’s Disciple (2 mics. Terrible. This shit is plain ol’ trash. How you can make a double album and not have more than 5 hot songs? Anybody who ssays this album is bannans is fucking crazy. Get off of niggas dick)
Hip Hop is Dead (4 mics. This is another ovverrated album. It’s far from corny. But at the same time… it definitelty aint a classic by any stretch of the imagination. Stop throwing out the word classic so much.)
Untiteled (Nigger album) (3.5 mics. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel kind of depressed when listening to this shit. I wanted to go to sleep evertime I heard it. I remember one time when my girl was staying at the crib and I had listened to this album right before she came over… I got so sleepy that I didn’t even want to have sex with her. She thoguht I wasn’t in to her or that I was cheating on her. Yes, she is hot (Rican and black). That should tell you something about the album.)
Lost Tapes (5 mics. Though not an offical album, this joint is just bannas,. This is a classic in my mind. Every single track is creative and lyriacally off the charts. This CD shows why Nas belongs in the GOAT convo)
There you have it… a breakdown of two legendary careers
As you can see… Hov fell off after 2001. Nas fell off after 99. They both had incredible 5 year runs. Hov from 96-2001 and Nas from 94-99. You can make an argument of who is better but there is no clear answer. No matter who you choose the next person can easily make an argument for the other nigga. I honest believe it’s 1A and 1B is this case. Both these niggas are crazy talented. At the top of their games they are easily in the conversation for G.O.A.T.
What do y’all niggas think is better??
Please be objective as possible
No stans please!

Alright, I see you definitely are fans of both, I just have a different opinion. I am of course a fan of both. Here are my mic ratings.
Jay-Z
Reasonable Doubt – 5 Mics Classic!
Vol 1 – 3 Mics – Could have been classic had not Sunshine and a couple other “Puffy Type” records not been on there.
Vol 2 – 4.5 Mics – Jay’s most succesful album to date. Commercial, but damn near classic.
Vol 3 – 3.5 Mics – Not a horrible album, but definitely his worst outing in my opinion. There are some bangers on here but definitely some songs that I never listen to.
The Dynasty – 4 Mics – Good album over all, it was more of a Rocafella album than a Jay record. Good album nonetheless and it was good to hear Bleek and Beans do they thang.
The Blueprint – 5 Mics – Classic
The Blueprint 2 – 3.5 Mics – There were definitely some bangers on here, but there are tons of filler songs. If it were a single disc, it could have been classic.
The Black Album – 4.5 – If it wasn’t for the song “Threats” this album would have been classic. Great retirement album and way to go out.
Kingdom Come – 3 Mics – Album sounded rushed. The product didn’t meet the anticipation. There are good songs and definitely not so good ones.
American Gangster – 4.5 Mics – If it wasn’t for the song “Blue Magic” I think this would have been another classic. Great concept album. It was good to hear Jay over that soulful shit again.
The Blueprint 3 – ?????? You tell me!
Nas
Illmatic – 5 Mics – One of the best rap albums ever!
It Was Written – 4 mics – Very good album just a couple songs messed with the classic status.
I Am – 3 Mics – Definitely one of Nas’ worst outing to date. There was handful of good songs, but there were a armful of bad ones.
Nastradamus – 2 Mics – This is Nas’ worst album, period!
Stillmatic – 4.75 Mics – The reason I don’t give this album a 5 mics rating is because I felt the only reason it got 5 mics was because of the Jay beef. It was a great album no doubt, but not quite worth 5 mics.
God’s Son – 4 Mics – This album has great songs on it. ” Dance, If Heavan Was A Mile Away” Warrior Song,” and there were a few others. Defintely a grown man album.
Street Disciple – 1 Mic – This is the worst rap double album ever, period!!!
Hip Hop Is Dead – 3.75 Mics – I felt like he did an incredible job drumming up the conversation, but a horrible job executing the sound to the conversation. Decent album, but Nas is capable of more.
Untitled – 4.5 Mics – Loved this album. At a time where people were scared to talk about race, Nas did. The message matched the sound. Wish I could hear Nas rap on more production like this. 1 maybe 2 songs from being classic. I can listen to this album all the way through.
Distant Relatives – ????? You tell me!
