New Music: Drake feat. Jay-Z “Light Up” (Does it live up to your expectations?)

New Music: Drake feat. Jay-Z “Light Up” (Prod. by Noah “40″ Shebib and Tone Mason) (with Evil Empire mixtape tags, via Splash)
The build up for this song has been insane….
“Working with Jay was one of the most key moment in my life.” (Drake to DJ Semtex)
“there’s a Jay-Z/Drake track that he played for us – minus Jay’s verse. Jay-Z doesn’t let anyone hear his stuff before it comes out. Drake claims it is the greatest verse Jay’s ever done.” (Ace Burpee, Winnipeg Free Press)
“It’s real rap…It’s great. The perspective, the dynamic on the track — it’s me and Jay’s relationship on the song, basically. When you hear it, people will be like, ‘Oh man.’” (Drake to MTV)
“It was like, ‘Man, this is a moment. This sounds like where I’m at in my life.’ So, we took it and 40 did what he does…Jay-Z’s on it. The song is phenomenal…” (Drake to MTV)
Now 3 weeks away from Drake’s Thank Me Later release, two songs leaked: “Fireworks” featuring Alicia Keys, which Drake has been performing on tour. And, the long awaited Jay-Z duet, “Light Up.” Does it live up to the anticipation?
I love the song already. And I’m genuinely excited to hear the entire album and see him perform at Summerjam next week.
UPDATE 6-1-10: Well apparently someone is slowly leaking all of Drake’s album via video…but that’s no bueno. However, the official untagged version of this Drake x Jay-Z is very necessary, because I was getting worried that a generation of non-savvy listeners would not buy the album and only hear this chopped and screwed-up radio edit….and forever think that Drake says “Like Fredro Star was in Sunset Park stunting hard in his yellow Grammer….” LOL. Thanks to Splash for the CDQ
After the jump: T.I. tells Angie Martinez that he thinks that Drake will go gold (500k+ albums sold) in his first week…Drake talks about “Light Up” back in 2009, before Jay-Z was even on the song…and more

Good track!!!
Jay-Z isnt hip hop at all anymore he’s an uncle tom like M.I.A said… Hip hop dont put on the tap dance face with Bloomberg and the new Russian who just bought him but listen I wont go in on dude now.. He’s Sinatra, an old white dude walking around NY! He used hip hop to become everything he’s ever wanted to be a cooperate uncle tom! And then to throw jabs at beans was just faggoty
The song is good love the hook.. Album sound worth buying 750k the first week… Predicting it will leak tomorrow!!

Wow. How ignorant are you? That’s all right. Stay in the hood broke “keeping it real.” Here I thought it was actually positive to see someone come from nothing to being able to rub elbows with billionaires and making deals. I swear, sometimes black folks, sorry, niggas don’t know what they want. You want to be accepted by the people in positions of power but when someone actually gets there, you call them a sell out. You sound like one of those guys who thought a kid with good grades was corny and a “white boy.” Grow up and learn how the world works kid.

You want to be accepted by the people in positions of power
lol wat an uncle tomish statement
The ppl in positions of power are selling out my people everyday, the day those ppl accept me is the day i know i failed.
And im not saying Jay is a sellout, but to think ppl call him a sellout just because of money is idiotic…with or without money, its the way one moves that make them a sell out.
hahah, only an american would call a kid with good grades a “white boy” lol
“Here I thought it was actually positive to see someone come from nothing to being able to rub elbows with billionaires and making deals.”
And dats how i know the system has succeeded. This is the lessons you have been thought all your life. This is why you see ppl like Malcolm,Martin, people who rise up to fight against the people “in positions of power” die young, while those who rise up to rub elbows with the ppl in positions of power are blessed with longevity, money and women
HA! you think you know how the world works do you

Peetey Green please thats problem we talk about bettering ourselves but when we do we are considered sell outs cut the crap.

@Smoking Aces it’s ignorance, don’t listen to that nonsense. Jay is doing what he’s supposed to do and what any person with sense would do. If putting your family in the position where they no longer have to work for anyone else, or putting them in the position to really pursue what they want in life is being an Uncle Tom, then that’s what i’m trying to be. Misery really loves company and negros like that in the hood hate on Jay only because of that. They hate to see another man prosper, they really would like to see them on the same corner, on the same block as them. Truly sad!

Sadly u are living in 1984 in your definition of hip hop. Hip Hop grew up, got mainstream, spread around the world and incorporated. Hip Hop wasnt thugs w/ drug & gun talk. Can u start your condemnation of the 90% of rap that is made up of that?

Sorry but having money dont make you an Uncle Tom allowing yourself to be a puppet of the white man and a yes nigga does…My wife has he PHD, I have my MBA nothing uncle Tom-ish about those grades.. You slow self haten niggas dont have no fuckin clue what your talking about… Lets not make this about everyone else or your lame ass for being called fake in your life time.. Keep the attention on that uncle tom ass nigga Jay- Z…..
Getting yours at the cooperate level and wanting to be them are two completely different things.. He dreams of waking up being white, prays he was Sinatra and bloomberg THATS A FUUCKING uncle tom!!!
Who said he had to stay in the hood and that something wrong with him trying to “better his life?” I dont respect that cracker ass nigga doing it while selling his community and race to the white man’s puppet and I know you ignorant fucks dont understand that and maybe never will…
After the next retard responds I will post a list of rich, smart black people who arent fucking sell-out Uncle Toms that are very smart that are respect!!! Like Kathy Hughes do you know who that is? Billionaire SMART BLACK WOMAN!!! That nigga Jazz-O Jr. aint shit but a box of Corn Flakes run by the General Mill…. Sold his soul for the white-mans love and in turn the white-man keeps his sorry ass relevant by buying 500k copies of sorry ass albums like American Gangster just to use him as some fake broker and business liaison and in return he gets some scraps and a few hoops for the hood… YOU NIGGAS DISGUST ME!!!
People want leadership, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they’ll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They’re so thirsty for it they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there’s no water, they’ll drink the sand. People don’t drink the sand because they’re thirsty. They drink the sand because they don’t know the difference.
You mother fuckers dont know the difference!!! I see urban gentrification is taking place in your soul and minds, Showing how effective Uncle Tom’slike Jay-Z are, sad day… Niggas cant fight to improve or clean up their communities and think they have to stay away in order to make it..

LOL @Peety’s comment. You got an MBA talking like that? Really? Where did you get your MBA? at BMCC? lol.
Your wife got the PhD and you cant spell things right and talk like a stupid teenager. Great.
A ghetto kid growing up to become the most well known musician/businessman of our generation is being Uncle Tom and getting an MBA from the white man to be able to be incorporated into his system well isnt? You only got that degree to fit into the upper middle class along with white folks. Get real.
Still calling someone Uncle Tom at this day and age makes you look like a runaway slave.
That “sell out” “Uncle Tom” happened to have created a shitload of jobs for black people ranging from the music to the fashion industry and more.
THAT is a smart way of helping the community out, not handing out freebies.
What have you done for the black people lately?

jay z is not an artist. kanye is an artist. jay z is thomas kinkade. kanye is andy warhol. that’s the difference. jay z only cares about making money and expanding his brand. kanye cares about the music and the fame. rap would be better off if it had more kanye wests and fewer jayz(s). that isn’t to say that kanye is a superior lyrical talent–just a superior artist. should jay z be a role model for aspiring rappers? well, if your goal is to sell crack as a youth, name your record label after a robber baron, make music about selling crack as a youth, undercut your business partners, friends, associates, and start making shitty, banal music then by all means have at it…i guess. you could argue that jay z has become successful, but that he has set east coast rap music back 20 years due to everyone trying to copy his path to success.

Firstly, ya’ll seem angry as hell. Is it that serious?
Trying to make a case that Jay-z isn’t an artist by comparing him to Kanye is ridiculous. An artist is someone who simply creates art. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant. Whether you agree with the morality behind his creation is also irrelevant.
@Petey : Why do you or anyone else care about what another man spends his money on? Are you his accountant? Does he owe you money? Did he promise to build businesses in your community, then back out? More than likely not. So why does it matter. Not every black man you see with some national exposure is gonna be Martin Luther King. And not being such doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a “sell-out” either.
Can you site one specific event where Jay-z has said he wanted to be white? Can you site one instance where Jay-z has Tommed out? Because right now it just looks like you’re upset because he’s successful and didn’t turn into Malcolm X after he became successful. I’m just sayin.
Peety Green Reply:
May 27th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
The problem is that I can site too many incidents of his Thomas way but I digress…
Sorry you guys been missing the countless post on this topic if info creates a better system to search old post I will copy and paste a few but for now I wont waste a day on this again….
He’s an Uncle Tom! Thats my perspective and your perspective tells you he’s the smartest man in the world.. there is some nuance there for sure.. But he has tom-ish moves and he’s a sucker!!! Plain and simple!!!

Hov gave beans a platform on which any real hustler would took and ran with rather beans choose dumb shit so now he has nothing thats not Hov fault beans is a grown ass man he choose his life…
But yall stay on the bottom and look up you dont have to like the man to respect his hustle this guy is from the hood no diploma he dont shoot a ball through a hoop but he can still sit with Buffet Gates Bloomberg and so forth and they respect this guys mind not his rap metaphors so what more could u look for.

I find it interesting that someone who hasn’t dropped an album yet can make song after song about how rich and famous they are.
Rap game is going the way of boxing; only a few cats shining, most of the talented dudes toiling away in obscurity.
Meanwhile, Em, Dre3K, and Raekwon continue to be better than Jay-Z.

i dissagree , i think jay-z era that u speak of was 96…and it was very movie style , mafioso hiphop at that time…the ” golden era ” was most def 86-89 when hiphop was rarly played on mtv or in white america as it is today. that being said , drake has great appeal now because of how he carries him self…well spoken , and easy to understand…in my youth i was in the streets doing dirt , and thats what i could relate to , now as an older man who has a family , and just likes good decent hiphop with some creativity , i like this drake guy…he can chill with your white frineds mom , and she’ll think he’s adorable..he can kick it with me cuz he dont fake the funk…jay-z is older and much wiser now , yet i feel his music still stays fresh…and yeah , he’s still nice to me , better then a lot of the other stuff out right now , but thats just becase i feel as a whole , america is getting dumber and lazyer then ever before. so being a lyricist is not a high priority any more…if it was we’d all be jocking joell ortiz , cuz by far , he’s the illest out right now…

I think that Jay is purposely not pushing J.Cole because he wants Cole to push himself and build his own buzz like Kanye had to do back when Rocafella didn’t really care for his existence…And it’s actually working.
For the first time in a rapper-turned-label head relationship, you actually see a real business relationship…Not some “we are family-ride or die” type of relationship because you dude signed some contract…
J. Cole will have his own lane, and he’ll shine on his own.

He says “Con Edison flow”.. referring to the electricity provider for New York, Con Edison.

Your making shit up. An Entendre is a statment that has 2 meanings. Meaning 1 is always straight forward so, “Hoes turn their head like owls I’m the man of the hour” is the first one.” What would the other 2 be? I assume he’s referncing Owl’s in clocks but Then that would make him the Owl ReallY I think He has 2 statments that are 2 entendre’s and not one that is a “triple Entendre”

1) If an entendre was “a statement that has 2 meanings.” then “double entendre” would be redundant. A DOUBLE entendre is a word/phrase capable of 2 meanings…a TRIPLE entendre is one that may be understood in 3 ways (granted you wont find this term in a dictionary but it has been used by academics when reviewing novels [e.g. Romeo and Juliet])…
2) I wrote my take on what his lyrics mean…now I’m not Jay and he probably meant something else. With that said don’t come with a nonsensical rebuttal and then post “He has 2 statments that are 2 entendre’s” I can’t take you seriously…
Jasperfect Reply:

Dude don’t take it personal and you shouldn’t be taking it seriously. (if you are you need to hit the bar ASAP and unwind) I know what you said is all opinion just like what I said. I didn’t say DOUBLE entendre because I know it’s understood. What I’m saying is there’s no 3rd meaning that I can see there.
Jroopy Reply:
May 27th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
after rereading wha I posted my tone didn’t come off right (problem with the net)…I didn’t take it personal and it was more of a passive-aggressive-friendly retort…like when I’m arguing with my ppls and tell them they’re dumb as fuck…it’s all in good fun so let me rephrase

OK i wasnt really gonna comment but i must vent… Drake’s RAPPING. That’s great. Drake probly reads these blogs and is making a conscious effor to appease the the blogosphere citizens that dwell on these comments. Fine.
But a lot (I will say majority) of ppl who enjoyed SFG didn’t enjoy it for ‘Say What’s Real’ or ‘Ignant Shit’.
These leaks really aren’t setting the mood like SFG as whole and that might change when the whole product drops but to me TML couldve used tracks like ‘Unthinkable’ and Wayne’s ‘Single’ more so than these so called lyrical rapping ass rapping (trying to be anyways)tracks.
IMO.

Ok ill explain the entendre- look up the Bohemian club. They worship a giant owl named Moloch, its an ancient Canaanite god. Thats what jay means when he says ‘im the man of the owl/hour.’ The owl is seen as a powerful symbol within the occult because its a symbol of wisdom and can see in the dark. Its really no secret that these niccas is all in fraternal occult societies. Even if you watch ‘fade to black’ rick ruben shows his books on black and white magic along with a shriners hat on top of a polar bear.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh003Czlx3g#t=1m19s
I’m not saying any of this is evil- im just saying they can talk and do these things in public cuz the profane dont see it. Its for eyes to see and ears to hear.
These dudes is all weird tho for getting involved in that stuff. The music industry is fraternal unfortunately.
im not going to bother explaining the other lines. Those are obvious.

Remained silent in the massive ‘On to the Next One’ video discussion and here we get a ‘whoa’…Very profound take. I guess the industry IS fraternal and its to much of a conflict of interest to address it.

The amount of buzz this track got in this blog alone is a testament to what a staple in hip hop the man has become (Jay-Z, of course). Bottom line is everybody’s talkin’. HE’s ONLY MAKING REFERENCES TO HIMSELF AND HE’s GOT YOU GOING CRAZY.
One should be more concerned with how to one day be in a room with him, rather than disecting his work line-for-line for the purpose of support one’s own stance on hip hop in general.

Lyrics:
(Drake)
I been up for four days gettin’ money both ways
Dirty and clean, I could use a glass of cold Spades
Rolexes, chauffeurs, and low fades,
I keep thinking, how young can you die from old age?
They always tell me nobody’s workin’ as hard as you
And even though I laugh it off, man, it’s probably true
‘Cause while my closest friends out there partying
I’m just here making all of the music that they party to
But party on, party on, all night nigga
I got these new rappers nervous, prom night nigga
I’ve grown tired of these fuckin’ grown man liars
Storytellers, they ain’t even need a campfire
Uh, but I just want to tell the truth
Before one of the haters load up a couple shells and shoot
The shit feel like when Fredro Starr was in Sunset Park
Stuntin’ hard in his yellow Gramma
Yeah, but I’m a ma’fuckin’ missed target
But a target nonetheless and I just started
Was that directed at moi? It can’t be
They must be talking to themselves, hoes hands free
Yeah, and I’m just filling up this daily planner
Gettin’ busy ’cause I’m a star, no spangled banner
Jealous dudes get to talkin’ in they music
And I just say I wrote it for your girlfriends, Kelsey Grammer
Yeah, that’s what life becomes when you’re doing you
Welcome to Hollywood, don’t let this town ruin you
And if you pillow talkin’ with the women that are screwin’ you
Just know that she gon’ tell another nigga when she through wit you
Don’t get impatient when it takes too long
And drink it all even when it tastes too strong
Yeah, I gotta feel alive, even if it kills me
I promise to always give you me, the real me
Who would have thought
I’d be caught in this life?
Let’s celebrate with a toast
And get lost in tonight
And make it all light up
(Hey, Guru, tell hom’ to go to open that Ace right there),
Wait until the sun goes down
We gon’ make this bitch light up
Even when the sun goes down
I’m gon’ make this go
(Jay-Z)
Owww, hoes turn they heads like, owls
I’m the man of the hour
Triple entendre, don’t even ask me how
Con Edison flow, I’m connected to a higher power
Bright life’d make your whole city light up
A trillion-watt light bulb, when I’m in the nightclub
I just landed in that in that G450
Caught the Mayweather fight, ’cause the satellite was crispy
(Uh) Y’all can miss me with that money talk
The smart money’s on Hov, fuck what the dummies talk
I don’t do too much blogging
I just run the town, I don’t do too much jogging
(Unh) I ain’t got a scar yet
‘Cause you fuckin’ around with me and my dogs is far-fetched
Drake, here is how they gon’ come at you
Will silly raps for you tryin’ to distract you
In disguise, in the form of a favor
The Barzini me, watch for the traitors
(Unh) I done seen it all, done it all
That’s why none of these dumb-dumb could dun him off
The summer’s ours, the winter too
Top down in the winter, that’s what winners do
And to these niggas I’m like Windows 7
You let ‘em tell it, they swear that they invented you
And since no good deed go unpunished
I’m not as cool with niggas as I once was
I once was, cool as the Fonz was
But these bright lights turned me to a monster
Sorry, mama, I promised it wouldn’t change me
But I would’ve went insane had I remained the same me
Fuck niggas, bitches too
All I got is this money, this’ll do
Who would have thought
I’d be caught in this life?
Let’s celebrate with a toast
And get lost in tonight
And make it all light up
Wait until the sun goes down
We gon’ make this bitch light up
Wait until the sun goes down
I’m gon’ make this go

Actually the whole album not living up to expectations.
More than half of it is leaked.
No one in their right mind who’s been around for the hip hop classic can call this album classic.
With such HYPE you debut is suppose to be classic and he fails at it already.

Honestly, I’m not expecting a classic from Drake, and that’s okay. I expect a great album for the summer- what we really should be doing is blaming the media for over hyping Drake, it sucks that if his album isn’t a “classic” it’s automatically a failure by critics and bloggers….

It’s to premature to say it won’t be a classic. The thing about the era of the “hip hop classic” is that you didn’t have to worry about your songs being leaked and (over) analyzed a month before your album drops.

This $hit is Ehhh! All this hype about the greatest beat ever and the song is phenom… in the words of The Great Ocho Cinco Chile Please! Jay murk this cat on the track…. Drake is doing his usual rambling on the track with average punchlines. Everything I have heard is average at best.

so let me get this straight!! this is drake’s song right? and 90% of this blog is talking about hov..hmmm , interesting. second, i thought the title of this topic was “does this SONG live up to your expectation”?, not dissect jay z’s verse. A simple yes or no would’ve been fine, and thirdly the mere fact that people is really on here trying to cypher what hov meant or didnt mean goes to show you that the man have you in the palm of his hands…. i do not know of any other rapper or artist in any other music genre who’s music is taken apart and put back together line by line so much. Thats crazy! but hey.. whatever!!!!!

ur right…….I feel stupid. I had the answer in my head before writing and I forgot to say it. I wanted to say that this song does not meet my expectation its too fake for hip hop.

But you should remember the great musician AR Rahman as he has all the abilities.

My six sense is tellin me there’s a third verse that hasn’t been reviled. Hopefully Drake redeems himself b/c Jay aired him out w/ a classic verse.
Drake however did leave me wanting to hear more when i heared “I’m a ma’fuckin’ missed target. But a target nonetheless and I just started.” Good look on drakes part! Great look on Hovs part…

Info..what up? I usually play the background but I just wanted to add a lil something to this discussion(lol). If Jay is part of the organization you all speculate he’s apart of, I can say that it is not without penalty to:
Write, stamp, cut, carve, his affiliation on anything moveable or immoveable caple of receiving the least impression of asign or word..Ask me how I know!!

Something for the conspiracy theorists out there. One of the producers of this track is named Tone MASON! LMAO! Have fun with that.

not too much a fan of JAY-Z anymore, but im quite familiar with his catalogue and i would say his verses on this track are not really better but equal to his older material, because as an artist he is on a different level as a rapper. (not necessarily higher level in terms of being better) he doesnt rap about what he used to anymore. he raps about what he lives at the present time. so ppl that are still stuck on verses on songs like cashmere thoughts, big pimpin, brooklyn’s finest, can’t knock the hustle, regrets, dead presidents etc., are comparing two completely different eras of jayz. it would be silly of him to still rap about those things today. but for the “today” jayz at his current status and life, this song equals the jayz verses and era of reasonable doubt, hard knock life etc.

These verses are quite long. Are they 32s/64s? Jay did muuuch better than Drake here

Jay should do much better, he is the more experienced rapper here, Drake is a student. To answer this post question, i dont expect shit from Drake cuz im not a fan of Drake. Im a big Jigga fan and thats the only reason i peeped this track but i will not buy Drake music. I’ll give him credit for the Alicia Keys track “unthinkable” its dope but Drake is so plain to me.

A person who is not familiar with the hidden or alternative meaning of a sentence may fail to detect its innuendos, aside from observing that others find it humorous for no apparent reason. Perhaps because it is not offensive to those who don’t recognize it, innuendo is often used in sitcoms and other comedy considered suitable for children, who may enjoy the comedy while oblivious to its second meanings. Innuendo can also be used to make socially acceptable sexual humor. Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing used this ploy to present a surface level description of the play as well as a pun on the Elizabethan use of “nothing” as slang for sexual relations.[citation needed]
A triple entendre is a rare variation of a double entendre where a phrase can be understood in any of three ways. An example of this would be the cover of the 1981 Rush album Moving Pictures. The title could be read to mean transporting or relocating wall paintings or photographs by a moving crew, pictures that invoke emotional (moving) reactions, or a literal “moving picture” (i.e. a film or movie). In fact the original back cover of the LP showed a film crew shooting a crowd being moved by movers moving moving pictures.
