N.E.R.D. at the Smirnoff/Cornerstone party, NYC

Here’s the first video clip of N.E.R.D’s performance, more to come…
Thank you to the good ppl over at Cornerstone for inviting me to their second annual event with Smirnoff to celebrate old-school, new-school, true-school artists in hip hop. If you remember, last year, I covered the great collabos with Common and Just Blaze, Q-tip and Cool n Dre, and KRS-One and DJ Premier. They created new and good music, and then performed said music for a happy crowd in a great venue.
This year’s event featured Buckshot’s comeback performance (after being hospitalized last week for seizures!), as well as Grandmaster Flash, N.E.R.D and Nas. It was hosted by Sway and all the performers did a great job…The venue was huge and fancy, lighting was lovely, and I even saw mini-eggrolls being passed….but at times I kind of felt like a rag doll**…
More footage of N.E.R.D as well as an explanation from me….after the jump
**This time around, the venue was much bigger, but much less accomodating. There was an upstairs VIP, and then an upstairs backroom VI-VIP. But you couldnt see the stage from either. Then there was a side of stage, also with no view of stage, and then a curtained-off section of the side of stage….you get the idea. And you gotta love the b-list rapper who weren’t even in the show, but just had to have their half-man/half-orc bodyguards hustle them thru a narrow balconies, shoving little people out of the way just to get to that exclusive backroom where you can’t see or hear anything but at least you have a loaded cheese platter. (don’t mind me and lil’ Wendy, we’ll just hang off this railing until you and that 90’s West Coast rapper can get to that gouda)
Just had to vent…
Lucky Mike Fresh and my homie Yu Ming were posted up downstairs with a good view of the show…

So I was at this party – which was horribly disorganized and poorly managed. What time did NERD even come on? The invitation said 9pm-1am (stressing early arrival bc “just because you’re invited doesn’t mean you’ll get in”), but I left at 12:30 b/c I didn’t feel like staying out until 3am on a Tuesday night waiting for the openers (who didn’t come on until 12) to finish and for Sway to quit stalling. NERD rules, but seriously – whoever did (or didn’t, rather) organize that piss poor party deserves a swift kick in the nuts for wasting mine and many other peoples time. From being shoved around in the huge crowd of wannabes at the door (for an hour while the bouncers/chicks with clipboards stood there picking their noses), to being shoved around in the huge crowd of drunken wannabes spilling drinks inside (martini glasses? seriously? whose idiot idea was that) to waiting until the END OF THE PARTY for the headliner to come on (and consequently not seeing them), it was just a crapshoot. Smirnoff can’t throw parties to save their lives. Awful.
Sorry for ranting. I’m sure the headliners were good.

WE WAS IN THE BUILDING LAST NIGHT AND IT HAD ITS UPS AND DOWNS. TRUE…IT WAS UNORGANIZED OUTSIDE, DRUNKEN WANNABES INSIDE STAGGERIN ABOUT, AND LATER THAN EXPECTED PERFORMANCES….BUT….THE PERFORMANCES WERE SICK. N.E.R.D KILLED IT WITH SOME OF THERE OLD AND NEW JOINTS. (LOL A SKATE BOARD P FOR TELLING A DUDE IN THE CROWD TO TAKE OFF HIS TIGHT ASS BLAZER AND LOSEN UP) AND NAS DID HIS THING AS WELL. ALL AND ALL IT WAS A GOOD LOOK IN THERE.

This response is @ MEl.. Mel you should never comment on any event or vent.. Your parties re horrible. I went to that Horrible Home Party with Biz Markie.. They didn’t even want to let Biz in. You had horrible guys at the door. It was a Hip Hop honors event yet the door guys didn’t know any oldschool hip hop rappers by face??? What the hell was that about. The Smirnoff Party was way better then thet one u blasted with Mick Boogie and Biz Markie. Thats what happens when u let the venue take over your door. Talk about a club full of wanabees.

I was at the event Earlier this year at Element and yeah it did go a lot smoother. but, You can’t get great in every try. Atleast all of the artist did show up and didn’t do what Kanye did @ Bonaroo

@jintrovert…Im not sure who you think the first commenter Mel is, but I dont think he/she threw the party at Home with Biz.
Also….even though I didnt have as harsh criticism as Mel, I can understand some of his/her complaints. And I did have some issues as well with certain aspects of this year’s Smirnoff event. Especially in comparison to last years.
And I dont think anyone should hold their tongue just so that they can get free drinks.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
