Last year alone was a perfect example of how important hip-hop anniversaries can easily disappoint fans, but tip your hat to Nas, because he’s having one of the best victory laps ever. Not only releasing the 20th anniversary Illmatic XX reissue, the Queensbridge rapper opened Tribeca Film Festival with his already acclaimed Time Is Illmatic documentary and continues to perform his classic material on some of the biggest stages in music.
It’s no surprise then that his 20-year-old debut album is reaping the benefits of his celebrations. According to HipHopDX, Illmatic sold 14,987 copies this week, which is an incredible 844 percent increase on last week’s number (1,588). The album’s total sales now stand at 1,686,232. Illmatic has also enjoyed rekindled popularity online, with Spotify streams up 300 percent on the previous week.
