MTV’s ‘Hottest MC List’ (Top 5): Rick Ross, Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj & Lil’ Wayne
Posted by Mr.North under hmmm....? , quotes , videos[36] Comments
The moment is here. For the seventh edition of MTV’s “Hottest MC’s List,” the panel have crowned Rick Ross the top spot of their annual list. Rounding out the top five are Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Lil’ Wayne. Pretty remarkable for The Bawse considering he had no solo album last year. Congrats to Maybach Music Group who along with Meek Mill and Wale made the top ten.
“Rick Ross, I think, provides hope to that MC, to that kid growing up who just wants to rap and make street music and say, ‘You know what? In this world where hip-hop has become pop, you can still just rap,’ ” Markman said.
A lot of times artists are faced with a sophomore slump. I think Drake surpassed it and probably had one of the best hip-hop albums of the year,” said Steven Roberts, MTV News producer/writer, about the chart-topping Take Care.

Watch the panel round out the list after the jump….
“Kanye came off of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 2010, and just the hype from that album rolled over into 2011, as he started prepping us for WTT,” said Nadeska Alexis, MTV News’ RapFix blog editor. “Kanye was the only thing people could talk about for the first few months of the year.”
Kanye West
“Nicki Minaj doesn’t have to be Meek Mill, but at the same time she’s not Britney Spears,” said Steven Roberts, a segment producer/writer at MTV News. “I think Nicki Minaj is something special where she can be in the middle and she can be pop and hip-hop because I think hip-hop at this point is pop.”
Nicki Minaj
“I think that’s an understatement, that he remained relevant. I think that he maintained his dominance,” said Rob Markman, MTV News’ senior hip-hop writer. When we talk about Wayne, nobody [has] sold a million in a week — since Lil Wayne. Quite frankly, I think #4 is too low.”

Going by pro radio music, the list is actually pretty accurate from the top 5 up. I would put Jay-Z at number 4 and bump Wayne and Nicki down. They both get a lot of play but its feature tracks, not their own.

I co-sign the list completely even though I thought J.Cole should have replaced Wiz Khalifa on the list but I’m being biased. I think Nicki Minaj should have been in the top 3 since judging from everyone on it, its mostly based on the year 2011 and she somewhat DOMINATED 2011. Kinda surprised Ross is #1 since he didn’t drop a project sans MMG’s Self Made: Vol.1. Other than that, I think MTV pretty much nailed the list to the “T” when you really sit back and analyze why these artists are at the current position. People need to understand the concept of why MTV is putting this list together; its to stir up debate.

IF THIS SHIT IS BASED ON 2011 WHY THE FUCK IS KANYE WEST NOT NUMBER 2 OR JAYZ ? WTT CAME OUT IN 2011. RICK ROSS HAD A DOMINANT YEAR WITH MAYBACH MUSIC, I WOULDNT SAY HE WAS #1 IN 2011, BUT WHAT I COULD SAY IS WHERE THUCK COLE ON THIS LIST AND WHERE THE FUCK IS FABOLOUS ON THIS LIST LIKE COME ON MAN THEY STAY PLAYING LOSO. U TELLING ME WIZ KHALIFA IS LYRICALLY BETTER THAN FAB ? U MTV DUDES SHOULD ACTUALLY GET A REAL HIPHOP HEAD LIKE ME TO TELL YOU STUPID MOFUCKAS OFF.
IF I WAS IN THAT ROOM AND ONE OF THEM ASSHOLES WAS TO SAY
MTV JERKOFF: SO WIZ KHALIFA… NUMBER?
MONEYMAKINGMITCH: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
MTV JERKOFF: BUT HE HAD BLACK YELLOW?
MONEYMAKINGMITCH: IN 2010 AND THATS ABOUT IT HIS FUCKIN ALBUM FLOPPED.
SICK AND TIRED OF EVERYYEAR THESE GUYS NOT DOING A GOOD JOB LIKE KNOW THAT U GUYS HYPE CORNY RAPPERS AND THEY ACTUALLY LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND BELIEVE IT MAN. LIKE I ASK EVERYBODY THAT ACTUALLY LISTENS TO HIP HOP IF THEY EVEN LISTEND TO CARTER 4 AND NO ONE EVEN SAYS THEY BOUGHT IT!!!!!!!
IT SHOULD BE.
1) JAY-Z
2)RICK ROSS
3)KANYE WEST
4) J COLE

1)Ex Correctional Officer **FAIL**
2)Jewish singer/freestyles on blackberry **FAIL**
3)Actual artist, on pace for LEGEND

5)Raps like she has Tourettes **FAIL 2x**
6)LEGEND
7)NOPE

9)10 SPOT SUITS BETTER
10)HELL NO
* A lot of MC’s left off this list, can they add a clause that an MC must be able to freestyle on HOT97 in front of flex with no notes on them in order to make the list, for reference please watch Lloyd Banks (below).. This is an MC

You have serious issue if “Jewish singer” is your reason to hate on drake. Dude has countless reasons to hate on him purely based on his music and you pick that? Really homie

I agree with Ross being #1..he had one heck of a year but my thing is how you reward Ross who didn’t have an album out, but punish Jay because he took a “backseat” on WTT??? That shit does not make any sense!
And it’s full time the hip hop community be honest with themselves in regards to Nicki Minaj. She released a pop album! and the only time she went hip hop is when she’s featured on someone else’s song (Drake, Wayne, DJ Khaled). She had a heck of a year as well but this is about hip hop artists and she’s on the borderline..she should’ve been #6 and Hov a lil bit higher.

J. Cole was the biggest snub EVER! Look at what he sold wit hardly any promotion. He was featured on some hits too! He sold more then Wale, Big Sean, Wiz, Meek(who hasn’t dropped an album)! This list was BULL and everyone kno it!

Honestly y’all cheated jay imma give y’all hard facts……
I do believe Ross is arguably #1 hands down everything he done with keeping himself relevent from 2010 ashes to ashes features signing wale meek mill and wale self made album hit songs for all of them and the warner bros deal and rich forever coming back after the seizure winning he has a lot of points
But how do you not even mention jay watch the throne is arguably the album of the year and will be given all that credit at the Grammys next year but he’s finishing the building in Brooklyn he had j.Cole have not only the number 1 hiphop album but #1 album in the country signed cher Lloyd, jay electronica, jahlil beats and willow smith…won a Grammy with KANYE coming into to his daughter hitting billboards after 3 days old just saying man

Mtv don’t know shit about hip-hop, and they show that making a list with r&b singers, nursery rhymes, pop star excluding Jay, Wale, and West. need to add J.Cole, Nippsy, and underrated but lyrical B.o.b and Common (truth) top it off with Fab. then it’s list and they could add the last two Meek or whom ever
