Miss Info Exclusive: Raekwon reveals the turmoil within the Wu-Tang Clan
Posted by Miss Info under Beef , Exclusives , Not Good For Hip Hop , Quotes , Videos[76] Comments
sigh.
Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work with the Wu many times. From the Enter the 36 Chambers release parties at Trafalgar Square and Webster Hall….to album previews with Raekwon…to indepth discussions with Ghost and Rza for the “Bling Bling” book…
And that’s why I was honored when Ghostface and Raekwon reached out last week and said that they needed to talk to me about something important.
But, see, I’m also a die-hard Wu fan.
Which is why, this is one exclusive I wish I never had to hear.
Ghost fired the first shot on MTV’s Mixtape Monday, saying:
“the hierarchy at Wu-Tang Clan is on some bullsh–. They trying to f— around and make me push my album back and doing all this. But n—as ain’t give us money when we did them Wu-Tang tours… n—as is holding onto a lot of money…It’s a battle right now.”
“The Big Dough Rehab is my album, 8 Diagrams is their album. But it ain’t got nothing to do with the regular members. ‘Cause I love Raekwon, Masta Killa, U-God, Genius, all them. But it’s on right now… N—as better pay my f—ing money. Matter of fact, they can keep the money — just get me out of their life right now.”
And in this two-part conversation, Raekwon goes deeper into the creative and business problems within the Wu..
I wish I could believe that this would all blow over in a few weeks…(I even sat on this scoop to see if Rae and Rza would reach an understanding.) But sadly instead…there will be more revelations from Ghost, coming soon.
(Thank you so much to Rik Three21media for the edit.)

[…]Family ain’t family no more…Raekwon is very candid with Miss Info in saying that the majority of the Wu-Tang Clan is not satisfied with the direction that RZA is taking the group in.[…]

Miss Info, I don’t know if you’ve seen this article yet, but RZA seems to confirm the creative friction with him and the rest of the clan in this interview:

WOW… I HAD NO CLUE YOU WERE SO BEAUTIFUL MISS INFO…. SOMEONE SHOULD REALLY GIVE YOU A TALK SHOW… REAL TALK!
November 8th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Wow….Info with the scid-oop. That’s one of Rae’s most focused interviews. I know they’ve been feelin the fan heat from all over, and dudes can hear it themselves. This has been a new direction that the brothers might not feel for themselves at this moment in time. Kudos to you for that interview, that’s major. I’m kind of hoping for that second album…that would be good for hip hop and show the strength of a movement.

Ghostface
Mighty Healthy
listen to beginning of the song if yal’l don’t believe me.
I grew up listening to wu but damn this shit sad, the album ain’t even come out yet! Niggas shouldv’e just been quiet and see how it did first before they made assumptions. It ain’t family with them niggas no more, everything is in dissaray now. Oh well I’ll just keep bumping that old wu shit, niggas is getting old now too. Everybody falls off sooner later I hope they can get they shit together but I don’t care anymore. I’ll still check the album out though. Its always Wu Tang Forever though for what they brought to the game.

I definitely understand where Rae is coming from, you should always try to stick to your strengths and your core sound. BUT on the flip side, I think RZA is trying to step up the musicianship and grow as artists. He has good intentions and I’m not getting the impression that Rae and Ghost really get the big picture.
You can’t be an angry 22 year old black male forever, there should be growth and progression involved in the music.
November 8th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
“I never robbed nobody, and if i robbed somebody it’s bcuz I felt they needed to be robbed”
Hilarious !!!
November 8th, 2007 at 6:35 pm
There is a reason why collectives rarely stay together, and most MC’s ride solo or with a clearly deliniated power structure.
When the pack has too many alpha dogs, the hunt will never be successful.
When the producer begins to dictate the artist, rahter than complement the artist, the work suffers.
I love Rza, and Bobby Digital stays on the i-pod rotation, but people also need to remember that 36 chambers was 1992 and Forever was 1997. That was 10 and 15 years ago!
(though the best songs any wu-member has ever made were over Rza beats, IMHO)
November 8th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
This is sooo disappointing to hear…I feel sorry for th RZA because he got caught up in this Hollywood shit making movies and all that and now he want to take grimy Staten Island and clean it up and it just doesn’t work like that. I felt a let down coming when I recently read him talking about trying to be a real musician and shit, That whole vibe is WACK! HIPHOP ain’t traditional music B! Enter The 36 Chambers was not no traditional music and that’s what the people want grimy ass HipHop! not no polished up sound with featured Guitar Players and shit. DAMN RZA! You let down the whole HipHop Nation with this shit. RAE!!! if you do cross the bridge and do an album without the RZA, that shit better be legendary!!! You better find the coldest beats ever!! It better be on the scale of a Cuban linx or Supreme Clientele or don’t do it! This interview was enough, don’t totally disrespect the legacy of THE WU!

November 8th, 2007 at 8:50 pm
in a group that large it’s almost a given to have creative differences. to me that’s not sad. the sad part is the lack of trust with the money. all fingers seem to point at rza for that. dude is smart so i know that he must have reasons for his direction with the art. the money issue seems to be that of greed.
ms info don’t hold back on that RZA interview…
November 8th, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Hey Miss Info. Was there someone else in the room with you guys? It seems like he’s looking toward someone else every now and then and addressing them.
It’s sad but it seems like they’re going the route that most groups go.
On another note, a talk show sounds good to me. I wouldn’t mind seeing you 5x a week. Lookin’ real cute here.
November 8th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Info has been on her interview grind lately, good one. Sad to see whats going on with them now tho, hopefully everything works out.
November 8th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
imma have to roll with rza on this one
the wu aint the wu without rza
if rza say the tracks need guitars then they need guitars
know your role ghost and rae..
November 8th, 2007 at 11:14 pm
WU – DONT PUT IT OUT IF ITS NOT EXTRA DIRTY. PLEASE!
Shit is crazy. You know things are going crazy tonight and tommorow also.
As fans, we’ve had to listen to a lot of weak shit…from EVERYONE.
I had hints of this before Ghost said anything. The tension was obvious in that documentary trailer, and honestly, i was expecting this to happen since 98. Damn it took long, but ..goddamn…money and business culture will fucking break the tightest crew.
peace rae! peace ghost!
November 8th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
yeah, i gotta say, i side with rza. all the tracks i’ve heard from this record are hot — they preserve the classic wu sound but push it forward in cool ways. rae and ghost have to chill – you cant expect a group to stay the same for 15 years. everything i’ve heard from 8 Diagram beats the hell out of anything on Iron Flag. two words: TRUST RZA. it worked in 93, and it’ll work in 07.
November 8th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
LONE GUNNER…
I AGREE, FULLY!!!
ALL WU ALBUMS OVER NON-WU PRODUCTION IS TRASH.
Sorry.
On another note…airing out family business…
NOT COOL!!!
Check out how GHOST says “THEIR ALBUM”. Hmmmm…ego?
November 8th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
This shit is sad….for real.
I just watched the vids and I understand RAE to a degree.
RZA, I love your shit, but keep BOB DIGITAL music to BOB DIGITAL albums…and pay them cats. Shit is retarded when cats beef over money. Thats that whiteman shit.
November 8th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
Bad move on everyone’s part to air shit out like that. Why?
As artists & creators of a product that’s yet to come out, they’re undermining themselves and possibly killing any momentum that has been built up for this album. If it’s money they want, they should at least help with promo by hyping up the positive aspects of the album. How are we as fans supposed to feel about copping a CD that the majority of the Wu don’t stand behind 100 percent?
As far as a Wu album without RZA, I’d be interested to see how that pans out, & I would support that. Something great may come about if the inmates run the asylum. But that idea shouldn’t have even been presented to the public like that, in the interest of and out of respect for the 8 Diagrams.
It’s funny how all this has been transpiring and coming to fruition: Things come full circle. The legend of the Wu was based upon rebelling against Shaolin. Now the rest of the Wu looks at RZA and Co. as Shaolin. Is it all some grand design….?
November 9th, 2007 at 12:19 am
@26 godwell…i totally agree with you. I really dreaded posting this, but I respect Rae’s right to voice his opinion and I honestly feel his pain. You can tell the love and honor is there but there’s been just too much water under the bridge maybe.
-Info
On another note, i notice that more people are watching part 1 than part 2. Should I have made the clips shorter? There was like 3 hours of footage.
November 9th, 2007 at 12:19 am
Fuck that I want that Shaolin album- Rae Meth And Ghost! thats it…. Get Premier,Alchemist, and 9th Wonder on the beats
u got an Instant classic! Big Dough cut the pie three ways. No need for the Rza fillme
November 9th, 2007 at 12:28 am
O yeah didnt Gza say sumthin like “whos your A&R ,a mountain climber, playin an electric guitar” Now it seems like he talkin bout the Rza!

The first video gets more plays because it automatically starts to play on Three21Media’s youtube page
November 9th, 2007 at 1:46 am
is it just me or are rae and ghost really that stupid. what rza has done in last 13 years has never been done by any hip hop producer. hes done so many things behind the scenes and im not talkin about OFF broadway shit, im talkin about tarintino films(kill bills), let alone the prior albums he made for the wu. the dude is a living fuking legend and rae and ghost cant trust him? plain stupid in my opinion
November 9th, 2007 at 2:22 am
i know this probably aint the place to post it, but whats up missinfo, you dont have that inside scoop on the royce and mistah fab beef? or do you tend to stick to reporting mostly on NY hip hop?
November 9th, 2007 at 2:29 am
Boo @ RZA..
November 9th, 2007 at 4:30 am
Wow…what a sad sad day for hip-hop among many other things. For so long the Wu-Tang embodied hip-hop, family, swagger, trend setting and so much more…but most of all when I think of the Wu I think of family…brotherhood…a group that seemingly would never see this day come. Money seems to truly be the root of all evil. It is a such a shame to see money and creativity to be the core issues that will ultimately split the full group and unfortunately never allow it to be the same.
Not sure what else to say, except this is a major upset for the hip-hop community, music and art in general…
R.I.P. to an era…of the WU.
November 9th, 2007 at 4:42 am
Everybody loves to confide with the Pisces folk (We have the greatest advice, but rarely follow our own jewels), first the Dips, now the Wu. Lol. Yeah Info, your talk show is coming, no doubt. BTW, I found some good links on that American Gangster blog, Bumpy Johnson’s wife sounds like she has a story to tell, she has a book comin out, they taking pre orders for it, they want to put it out independently.

November 9th, 2007 at 6:18 pm
Yo i’m glad Raekwon came out and spoke his mind.
He’s right, ever since 97, RZA’s been horrible on the beats trying to do shit different than what he did in the early 90s
why stray from what made you hot in the first place? and i know he can do that, he did some dope shit on Iron Flag
Ghost never really lost his ear for beats and he worked hard to get his shit out there
as far as the business side, it’s a shame it’s gotta go down like that, i figure one group with 9 members, all the other venture’s RZA’s got going on, someone’s gotta take control and it seems RZA’s not all there
i hope they come out with that second album like he says, without RZA

i also feel like rza is too much out there.he just needs to do some grimey wu inspired beats and let the rest of the pieces fall into place.kill bill and that other shit has nothing to do with the clan.maybe i’m wrong cause i’m not a rapper and i’m not in a group but to me it seems that simple.the good beats is the icing on the cake.just make good music and it will all work out.if not, then it will crumble!
November 9th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

2nd that.
The guys are older and this is what happens. Why should they be immune to this. Shit, my family is like this with my brother not speakin to us for 3 years. IT HAPPENS.
Especially with the incredible talent these guys have. But they most remember: They form like Voltron, which makes them unique, even today. They already missin a piece.
Hope they get their shit together.
November 9th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
I do have to clarify for people totally riding with Rae-
RZA had TOTAL creative control on 36 Chambers, and most of the solo joints. Everyone had a voice, but Rza was final say. But now all of a sudden that formula won’t work? Now all of a sudden Rae, who has hardly burned up the charts, knows better about what should be done?
Immobilarity went gold, and Live from NY was one of his few bangers non-Rza.
I know he has complained about lack of promotion, but if you go to the top letting Rza run the show production-wise, why shouldn’t you trust him again?
November 10th, 2007 at 1:21 am

tears, tears, tears…so sad. I’m speechless and crying inside, I agree with everybody’s comments because all sides have valid arguments. Personally I refuse to have an opinion, but its just a damn shame I was still screaming and living under the impression WU-TANG 4EVA meant Forever!
“because we don’t die we just multiply, forever and ever and ever” remember that??

I feel Rae all the way!! I was deep with this whole chamber for 7 years, and this bull has been happening forever, Rae just felt like he had to manifest it to the world!.. Enough is Enough, Brothers are tired! As much as they sit down for their Wu meetings, nothing is ever accomplished when you don’t see eye to eye and force a situation.
November 12th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Chris Rock just made a statement recently and i think it pretty much sums up whats going on here.. “Music kind of sucks. Nobody’s into being a musician. Everybody’s getting their mogul on. You’ve been so infiltrated by this corporate mentality that all the time you’d spend getting great songs together, you’re busy doing nine other things that have nothing to do with art. You know how shitty Stevie Wonder’s songs would have been if he had to run a fuckin’ clothing company and a cologne line? … Rap sucks, for the most part. Not all rap, but as an art form it’s just not at its best moment. Sammy The Bull would have made a shitty album. And I don’t really have a desire to hear [billionaire] Warren Buffett’s album – or the new CD by Paul Allen. That’s what everybody’s aspiring to be.”… but hopefully wu-tang is from a different generation and they’ll be able to pull through on this one

Its fucked up that shit went down the way it did, with everyone not being in agreement and the albums goin to be released anyway. Someone posted the Wu ain’t Wu without Rza. I’m a big Rza fan, but the same goes for the other 8 members. And I dont even like U-god’s shit like that, but still Wu-Tang CLAN is the amalgamtion of all them dudes. I’m not sayin Rza is dumb for wanting to change shit up, but disregarding the opinions of the rest of the clan is obviously fucked up. I wasn’t there while this shit happened so I’m gonna be careful to say IF EVERYTHING RAE SAID IS TRUE, then Rza was wrong on that one. Simple and plain. Progress is always good, the same can’t be said for change. SO just cuz RZA says sumthin sounds good doesn’t make it so, and this is comin from a serious fuckin Rza fan. With that said though, had there been no Wu (all 9 members) who knows if i’d care as much about him. Let’s be honest, even though the best wu tracks have had Rza involved, How many can say they HONESTLY liked any album from Rza, save for the first (Bobby digital), like they like Rae’s first shit or Ghost’s first and second, or 36 chambers, or Wu-Tang forever? Rza, is key. But so is all the elements it took to create every GOOD Wu album, so i’m sure unanimous decisions would be better than follow the leader. Rza is that dude, but I’d prefer Wu-Tang Forever over another Digital Bullet or Birth of a Prince, ANYDAY. Peace and One love.
November 15th, 2007 at 12:45 am
Rae has touched a lil bit of success recently by signing w/ Aftermath.Rae’s Cuban Linx was a classic and it was all thanks to RZA’s style at the time. What happend to his albums after?????RZA emerged from the norm and made tight ass beats. The BET article says its time to grow up and focus on different styles. Not bout killing and making money. I’m just thinking those days are over and Rae is relying his albums to hit commercial status like 50.To touch WU status worldwide is more important cuz its REAL. I live in Europe and WU is more known and respected than G-Unit.The reason why we Love wu is cuz its real and the beats are RAW all thanks to RZA and Mathematics..Crack, Heroin, and Money is BS rap to me.Not at all artistic.Might as well watch Scarface.Miss INFO your beautiful and should have your own site and tv show.

This shit isn’t new,Rza been sucking the blood out of the Wu since its inception. Its messed up that he is supposed to be a representative of the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths, but he is robbing the brothers that helped him build his empire.
He doesn’t care about the Wu. Hell he even jerked his own blood ODB. I know the truth behind some real shit. All these years the other members of Wu remained quiet out of loyalty to the clan.
At first it was Cappa, then it was U-God and now Rae and Ghost?Something aint right. Open your eyes. Ask Ghost about the death of General Wise in Ohio. Yeah go ahead and ask him.

I get the feeling that this behaviour by Raekwon is a little juvenile. He expects the RZA to do what for him? He has had one classic record in 1995 which the RZA produced along with two other classics in that year. What does he expect the RZA to do for him in 2007? The guys from Wu-tang need to know it is no longer the heyday when everything was all so simple then. Be a man Raekwon and stop hiding behind the RZA´s coat tails. Nothing can take away a classic, just be glad youve had one. Big up to all the other Wu affiliates who grind hard and don´t expect a handout and please Raekwon, don´t ever do shit like this again, because your´e destroying it for all the Wu.

You can’t be serious. I’ve been a wu head since the beginning. In fact there have been years at a time when I listened to no music but wu or affiliates. But 8 diagrams had maybe 3 songs worth a shit and I can’t understand what the fuck rza was thinking. I know they are big over seas and rza has grown and become more international, but the people that have grew up on this music want hellz wind staff, and snakes and shit like that.
