Meek Mill Debates with Philadelphia Pastor Over “Amen” Controversy
Posted by Mr.North under Hmmm? , Interviews[47] Comments
Recently, there’s been some negative backlash directed towards Meek Mill on the subject matter of his Dreamchasers 2 single, “Amen.” The drama is mostly being spearheaded by Philadelphia Pastor Jomo K. Johnson. The song, which also features Drake and Jeremih, is being used as an example because of its explicit lyrics tied into the theme of Church. Johnson has taken the issue a step further by announcing the plans to publish a book accusing Meek of blasphemy. Earlier this afternoon the two called into Philly’s 107.9 and had a heated debate on-air.
Stream their conversation below, while the video for “Amen” is set to debut later this month….

I just tweeted yesterday that I liked Meek Mills based on the few radio friendly songs I have heard including “Amen”. As spiritual church going Christian born and raised in the church I can’t say that I was offended per se but I can see how others would be. Interesting debate.
On another note does Meek talk about raping anybody in any of his songs????
July 11th, 2012 at 7:10 pm
The Pastor just wanna get some money,, they all do..
July 11th, 2012 at 7:25 pm
This pastor’s stance is baseless.”Revenge is like the sweetest joy next to getting p****” said Pac on Hail Mary! Lool…this dude makes it sound like Meek is the first rapper to use a biblical/church reference in his music. Get @ him Milly!
July 11th, 2012 at 7:36 pm
Being raised in the catholic church & going to catholic school for 5 years I understand what the pastor is saying from a spiritual point of view. Religion has strict ‘guidelines’.
However, this is reality. Meek is really in the streets right now, doing what he can to motivate & build his community, in a way that’s engaging and forthright. How can you not commend that?
Furthermore, there are numerous instances where priests were convicted for molestation… & you wanna talk about rape?
July 11th, 2012 at 8:25 pm
Sounds like blasphemy, to me…..
July 11th, 2012 at 8:35 pm
Fuck the PASTOR , he must be that thirsty for publicity !
July 11th, 2012 at 9:33 pm
lets face it meek and all these so called street rappers are ignorant niggas . everything they stands for and rap about is complete nonsense.im glad the pastor is calling him out on his bullshit.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:40 pm
@pata exactly what is meek doing to motivate and build his community ??
July 11th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
the pastors job is to get the message to as many people as he can. him being from the inner city of philly he knows meek has influence over the lost souls .and maybe can reach few of these people before its to late .if you cant understand that then you are dumber than the comment you posted .
July 11th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Meek Mill should take heed to what this man is saying because its up to people like him who the world gives the influence to use it in a positive way, and hes not and u know why?? Because THE WORLD will pay you to put TOXINS into the young minds of this Nation.

It seems to me that this pastor wants some type of publicity. He has an ebook out for 2.99.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:00 pm
religion is stupid. Wish Black folk in particular would wake up
July 11th, 2012 at 11:29 pm

This dude is a clown!! Its like that dude who was trying to get fame for dissing Obama!
These dudes come up at every turn to get they piece hahaha
Meek should slap this dude.

its mad funny how crazy rappers are … please go check that song “Amen” with all the hoes money bottles and he talking about telling girls Church when he gonna get some from shorty … and the Pastor is wrong?? isnt it obvious that its disrespectful to Church and Christ .. we said the same thing about Jay-Z when he took that trip on empire state of mind.. you cant frunt about it .. Meek just gotta face it that what he said was offensive to Christians
July 11th, 2012 at 11:53 pm
yo real talk .. all this pressure on Christianity wasn’t here like that in hip hop years ago .. big had a bar or 2 on a verse .. but now look you got tons of rappers on some anti-christ tip .. this movement is recent .. Now as far as Meek is concerned let just be real is the song offensive to Christians OF COARSE what if you had a song that said “I call out all the faggots, they yelling Meek Millz” thats not offensive to meek .. so meek millz making a track talking about doing things that the bible is against and he yelling church and Amen .. thats a no brainer .. why cant these RAPPERS JUST KEEP IT REAL .. yeah they kno its offensive but they dont care its just a song to them and they dont see why its such a big deal .. but now he screaming cuz he wrong…
July 12th, 2012 at 12:17 am
I wouldn’t even have responded.
Meek mad
July 12th, 2012 at 12:51 am
I really dont respect when artists do this. Folk do such blatantly disrespectful things then never wanna just say “yeah I did it. Its what I felt so yeah”….
Its like with “bitch” we ALL KNOW its s disrespectful term many rappers use for women. But the minute you call them out on it you get “not every woman is a bitch”….”There are bitches and there are women” blah, blah….even when the context of the lyric clearly has it as a substitute for women.
Rappers know they making a living off some foul things quite often. Maybe its a shred of conscience that leads to the attempts at justifying things?
July 12th, 2012 at 6:27 am
Meek is dead wrong, the song while hot is blasphemous that’s a fact. Meek didn’t say anything to justify the song or its lyrics as it relates to Church. Seriously saying “there’s some bad b*tches in the building. Amen” Is disrespectful to Women and to the Church if he can’t see it then thats sad. If we can’t admit then we are far worse.
Meek IMO is a decent rapper but I won’t buy that song. As for this Pastor I will acknowledge and agree with him that Pastor seems to be self promoting himself. Or looking for something and singling out Meek seems shady. There’s a host of other rappers from Philly saying like things in one way or another.
However the Pastor’s points in many respects are valid while poorly executed IMO. For instance the Pastor see’s and know’s Meek has the influence on those streets. Meek saying go to church could affect lives. Meek handing out sneakers to teams is noble without a doubt. Those sneakers could keep someone of the streets and save a life. Feeding the hungry with Turkey handouts can do the same. The Pastor should have tried harder to reach him, hopefully another local pastor will and use it to positive effect.
My bottom line is simple on this one…
Calling women b*tches and other black men n*ggers while proclaiming Amen and screaming Church is not a good look. Its dead wrong and if nobody see’s that. Then we got bigger problems.
Amen!
July 12th, 2012 at 12:07 pm
This is a great opportunity for some major gospel star to reach out to Meek Mill and take him up on his offer to remix the song. Can you imagine how many more people a remixed Amen with positive lyrics will reach – and the type of impact it might have to touch people’s hearts and souls? Not to mention it could give Meek Mill a whole new following.
The Pastor just wants publicity and money but if Meek Mill can flip it for the positive it would be a great thing.
July 12th, 2012 at 2:44 pm
I support this message
July 12th, 2012 at 7:34 pm
Listen theres ways to do things and theres ways not to do things.
What just happened here was an attack on a young mans character.
First ya tell’em ya trying to “Ban” his music, Immediate ‘Shock and Awe’ factor, then ya horribly paraphrase some lyrics which may or may or may not have been said an include the word “rape” in the conversation which only infuriates a man as if he’s being accused of it himself.
Pastor, my brother you were not prepared, but your fight is not over. Gimme 20 pushups incline off the first pew, while recitin the book of Romans thru Revelations then come out swinging!! God is good Always…
What he has to do is sit down an talk to him face to face and really see whats in a mans heart before he attempts to attack’em like that it’ll have a better outcome.
Now i seen somebody mentioned Jay-z, an i think that was against MC Hammer who from what it looked like wanted to Pop-Loc n Baptise’em all at once which would been really awkward if ya think about it smdh Tooo Funny LOL
Everybody believes in something and they all thank God when they achieve something they thought was impossible.
July 12th, 2012 at 7:34 pm
IN ALL ACTUALITY BOTH OF THEM FOOLS WASTED MAD MOMENTS ON THE PHONE WHEN THEY BOTH COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE STREETS OF NORTH PHILLY ACTUALLY DOING ALL THE WORK THEY SAY THEY BOTH DO. RELIGIOUS PEOPLE HAVE THEIR MISSION AND THINGS THEY WANT TO GET ACROSS BUT THE HUMAN MISSION OF ANYONE SENSIBLE IN PHILADELPHIA SHOULD BE PUTTING AN END TO THE RUTHLESS DAILY MURDERS #CHURCH
July 12th, 2012 at 7:43 pm
Every Christian has his/her Walk that they have to go thru to gain enlightenment so to speak.
An everybody that truly believes in the Spirit knows that this song is niether offensive nor on their radar other than to let them know that ignorance is bliss an it will have its day.
July 12th, 2012 at 7:58 pm
In the conversation Meek said, if the pastor would have approached him man to man to change or remix the song HE WOULDVE.
Another key point in the conversation Meek is heated an says “Nigga” then corrects himself an says “Homie” so if he had the decency to correct himself then youre not dealing with a man who is out right disrespectful.
The pastors first question shouldve been calmly “Do you believe…?”
an wether yay or nay “ok well lets talk about this record you have out…” an then from there the conversation wouldve went in a better direction.
As far as Rappers and Religion, as funny as it may sound, Its in the lyrics. And you can never base it on One Song.
July 12th, 2012 at 7:59 pm
The church is mad that meek mill is disrespecting women? The same church that frequently black balls women from jobs as pastors? The same church that reads from a book (the bible) that is more disrespectful to women than any Meek Mill song could ever hope to be? If this pastor wants an example of outrageous BS, don’t look at rappers, look at the bible. Slavery, stoning bad kids, killing people who work on sunday, advocating slavery, etc….The bible is full of more violence than every gangsta rap album put together. This pastor needs to sit his ass down. CHURCH!!!
July 13th, 2012 at 12:42 am
yea Meek said: if I ever go broke ima take yo money have my niggas run in yo crib & rape yo honey…on scared money with Nore…Meek was salty on that! the preacher made many good points!
Meek is new money you can tell. This guy doesn’t get the point that money doesn’t make all the problems go away! He keeps saying “we could’ve talked & I would’ve made a donation to your church” like that’s the pastor’s only interest.
smh I like Meek, but you can tell the nigga is super ignorant & type slow widdit!
July 13th, 2012 at 12:46 am
but it’s CURRENTLY the biggest song out. why is everyone (including Meek…rattin on old Eminem songs) bringing up the past to make point about this CURRENT topic! dude is not an old pastor…he’s like 33…when Hail Mary was out he was in the streets probably thuggin (by his own admission & his jail record)…so even though I’m sure he knows Meek is not the only guy to blaspheme in a song…it’s a current song so why bring up old ass Hail Mary & deceased artist to make his point????
July 13th, 2012 at 12:55 am
man handing out turkeys during the holiday isn’t some life saving act! lol you lost me when you got there. that’s that Nino Brown mentality…poison the block…give a couple birds out at Thanksgiving to seem like benevolent man! Al Capone did that in the Depression…he fed people & painted the streets red!
I definitely am not one to say ALL RAPPERS NEED TO MAKE POSITIVE UPLIFTING MUSIC…nah…rap would be wack to me if there wasn’t that ignorant element! I even like when intelligent artists like Nas get gully…BUT the big picture that Meek is paying for right now is that blaspheme all over the track! And he’s too simple minded & hot headed to construct a solid point for himself throughout the course of the entire interview. I like his music, but that song I’m beginning to fall back from & this was before Jomo came with his opinion. I like Meek as an artist but dude sounded brainless on that interview!
July 13th, 2012 at 12:59 am
oh & his ad lib said: “rape her” in the same way cadence a Jeezy would be like “hahaaa”…like it was nothing! lol -__-
July 13th, 2012 at 8:14 am
Sounds like you have been blessed to never be hungry or broke.
Many people have not been so blessed. For many committing a crime is a way of survival a last resort. Handing out that meal could mean the difference between some. Its a sad reality when we see faces standing on food lines, unemployment lines and on corners with signs offering to work for food or money.
Those people are the ones who see the difference a turkey makes. I have not lived that life and dread to imagine what its like. I commend anyone who gives back.
As for the 2nd paragraph. I agree with you 100%

Seriously, the IRONY of this Pastor going at Meek Mill makes me sad. The so called “reverend” shows no real love to Meek Mill and goes about this all wrong. He insults him, is condescending, cuts him off, is so rude, and comes across as highly judgmental. This is not what the faith he purports to follow is about, and he does such a horrible job of representing that he should be EMBARASSED.
As far as Meek Milly, and the song “Amen”, I thought the song wasn’t really to be taken literal. Even though I like Meek Mill and love Jesus, there are other songs that I think are way worse to listen to that he has made, not to mention those by a lot other rappers. Therefore, I’m careful what I listen to, especially if it’s something over and over. I’m not that big a fan of the song “Amen”. I support there being better quality hip-hop that avoids giving props to the wrong things, but that is a whole other discussion. I love hip-hop and the culture, and it’s a part of who I am as a black man. The content needs to get better, elevate, and have more depth to it like Kanye and Jay tried to show everyone on “Watch The Throne” or like the beautiful poetry Kendrick Lamar put together on “Section 80”. What if there was a rap album that everyone loved and listened to like MJ’s “Thriller”? That’s what I want for hip-hop and our music. The profaness, ignorance, and lack of quality a lot of times isolates it to just a few groups of people, but if the music is being done the right way (like Outkast’s “Speakerboxxx and Love Below”) then NO ONE can deny it and everyone will be JAMMING! 🙂
July 13th, 2012 at 9:39 am
Boy there’s a lot of evil on this blog…Amen
July 13th, 2012 at 9:52 am
how is a song that thousands of people in your neighborhood are listening to not on a pastors RADAR lol .. if you are reaching out to youth and being around people all the time how is a famous person that people look up to not on your radar ???? i mean their actions dont pay your bills but they are affecting the community
July 13th, 2012 at 10:26 am
Meek said in the first clip that he doesn’t believe in God, so why would he debate Pastor Jomo? In the picture on this site, Meek is wearing two crosses…If you give out coats, turkeys, sneaks, that’s s good look, but Philly has a serious issue with violent crime. The problem with Meek’s argument is that he brings up “why me? And not the other rappers?” Flawed argument.
July 13th, 2012 at 12:23 pm
Meek millz is a Lil nigga I can’t look up to him, I give Lil niggaz respect but that’s as far as it goes.
The song in itself is not hot it’s comical n has some shock value but that’s it.
If it’s affecting you please seek some help. Ppl in my neighborhood have real issues they’re dealing with like POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT etc etc. Niggaz ain’t studyin no Meek Millz!! They may study his willying capabilities but thats it!! He’s a young minded dude because he’s literally YOUNG an never had shit. So don’t expect him to get it all of a sudden!!
July 13th, 2012 at 11:40 pm
so u love Jesus and you dont think that the song “Amen” that has words in it that are sacred to Christians and using it for things like Bottles and having sex with B****s .. dont you think it was offensive … what if i had a song where i was talking about aids ridden ho’s and used your mothers name in it .. its the same thing ..
July 14th, 2012 at 3:36 am
Damn alot of yall sound like idiots..its music.. its entertainment..point blank period…get over it.
Besides as I recall.. Meek Mill is basically thanking GOD for all the joy and pleasures that the rap game has brought him… (pretty women, cars, ability to celebrate and pop bottles etc etc.. )
July 14th, 2012 at 4:06 pm
Meek is so ignorant it’s untrue. Seriously daft.
July 14th, 2012 at 4:08 pm
Can’t really disagree with you there.
July 14th, 2012 at 4:09 pm
PREACH!
July 14th, 2012 at 8:26 pm
I started loving rap since way back when, rap and me had a brown sugar type love story. I have now seen rap turn against God.
This all saddens me and I still find it hard to accept.
1. If you search evil hip hop industry on youtube you will get a full understanding of what is happening in entertainment today.
2. Most people don’t believe it to be true or don’t care.
3. There was a girl on youtube who was on the set of rick ross and said she was told to chant 666 during videotaping a vid. I believe now more than ever to be true.
4. They are testing the waters and it is going to get worst. We will see more and more of this as time goes on.
I never thought I’d be living in the end times where people call good evil and evil good.
There are lot’s of great t.v. evangelist that I have supported and I am so surprised that none of them have stepped up to tackle this subject. They are all ignoring it and I see that as a “sign” too.
If you love Jesus, if you have the heart and are unafraid to make a difference, I beg you to do so.
At the same I am worried that no one will be able to stop rap music from carrying out it’s new evil agenda. It is all so dark now.
July 14th, 2012 at 8:28 pm
I don’t really. Maybe I’m lost and going to hell
July 14th, 2012 at 8:38 pm
The book where he goes into detail about lil wayne is free, not sure if that is the one you are talking about or not. Not sure what he has in mind but what he said is still true!
July 15th, 2012 at 8:54 pm
the funny thing is that you really do see it .. but you just really wanted to try and mock the situation because u have something against christianity lol … just keep it real for once in your life.. stop trying so hard to be “cool”
July 17th, 2012 at 2:12 am
Ur a locked up guy…if white guys blaspheme its cos dey r dicks but a nigga blaspheming is appalling…meek mill is a disgrace nd he should stop going to church
July 22nd, 2012 at 2:45 pm
God is raising up a genetation that is obediant and “really lives for him” look up real music like This’l, lecra, andy mineo it doesn’t matter if u call yourself a christian and go to church….it says in the word u will know them by there fruits. Meaning…how they speak, how they treat others etc .
