Props to my homie Karen Civil and her client Wale (one of the few “next big things” that people actually seem excited about)….I’m liking the go-go fun of the stuff I’ve heard, lol, and the kid also has all the right bold-face names on his co-sign list. Plus, whatever Karen says is a go for me : ) (miss you at the old gig, homie, but you doing great!)
To read a personal convo btw the new signee and Just Blaze, check out his MegatronDon blog.
“It has just been announced on 93.9 WKYS that DC-area hip hop artist, Wale, has signed with Interscope Records in a joint venture deal with three-time Grammy award winning producer Mark Ronson’s Allido Records.
Wale, 23, has seen a tremendous amount of success for an unsigned hip hop artist over the past year, gracing the covers of URB and DNR magazines, doing remixes for Justice, Chris Brown and MIA, performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, song licenses with Nike, ENTOURAGE and MTV and a growing internet buzz surrounding his most recent mixtape 100 MILES AND RUNNING and his upcoming Seinfeld-inspired project, THE MIXTAPE ABOUT NOTHING. Entertainment Weekly recently reported that the mixtape features a skit from Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Wale signed a production deal with DJ-turned-producer Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Christina Aguilera) in June of 2007 after impressing him on Ronson’s European tour. Following an intense, six-month bidding war, Wale signed to a joint venture between Allido Records and Interscope, saying Jimmy Iovine, Luke Wood and the whole Interscope staff understood his vision better than anyone else. “Look at their track record,” said Wale via phone on his way to perform at a Justice concert in DC. “Dre, Eminem, 50, Pharrell, Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas, Soulja Boy…the list goes on.” “This is the best possible situation we could ask for,” says Daniel Weisman, Wale’s manager. “We waited and kept grinding until someone came with something we felt reflected the work we’ve put in; Interscope got it.”
Mark Ronson will executive produce Wale’s untitled debut album and contribute production to the project due out in fall. Other tentative contributors include past Wale-collaborators Osinachi (“Nike Boots”) and Best Kept Secret (“Back In The Go Go”), along with Just Blaze, Pharrell, Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Justice and DJ Toomp. Allido Records is a New York City-based label founded in 2004 by Mark Ronson and former manager, Rich Kleiman. Allido Records has put out releases by Rhymefest and Daniel Merrieather through J Records, and by Mark Ronson through RCA. Wale’s album will be the first release through their new joint venture deal with Interscope.”

Interscope has been the best way to go? Yeah maybe if you put out a record 3 to 5 years ago. Now… eh… not so much.
I would have been more impressed if they did it off the muscle. Mark Ronson got enough chips and clout to do it.
Stop sucking at the teet and getting robbed in the process fellas. I know 75% of the folks that will be working his records over there and I can honestly say that they can’t do much more than Wale and Mark could do on their own. Sad but true.

I have to agree with Truth Hurts. Go the indy route, because you’ll be responsible for your own promo either way.
Have we not learned anything yet?
That first meeting always goes really well with any artist with any sort of buzz. Then the same excuse is probably going to pop up again “they didn’t know how to market me.” How many times have we heard that? I don’t think the majors are trying to learn how to market real hip hop.
Interscope didn’t want Joell. Jive didn’t want Papoose. J. Records didn’t want Rhymefest. I like Wale, but I think Mr. Iovine is going to turn on him. The industry is hurtin’ right now. Do you really think majors want to throw money behind hip hop with the way hip hop has been doing lately on Billboard? Majors want acts that sell themselves. Good hip hop isn’t doing a whole lot of that right now in the mainstream.
Maybe I’m too pessimistic …

Because Joell and Papoose aren’t marketable. Wale and Interscope have their work cut out for them in a good way. Wale knows what he is and knows how to market himself.

@ Dan – What do you mean not marketable? Do you mean not good looking or soft and cuddly?
You can market anything or anyone of value if you do your homework.
The majors just don’t want to do their homework. They want the lion’s share of the profits, but they don’t want to do any other promo besides the same marketing methods they’ve relied on for decades, if you’re lucky enough to get that.
Isn’t one of the main reasons to go with a major for the marketing & promo?

YEAH I ALSO GOTTA AGREE ..JOELZ AN PAP ARE SICK BUT NOT MARKETABLE…PAP REMINDS ME OF A YOUNG CANIBUS..RAW TALENT YOU FELL HIS YOUNGER AN DESIRE BUT…JUST NOT ENOUGH PUSH TO GET MAINSTREAM ACCEPTANCE
WITH JOELZ ITS DA COMPLETE OPPISITE..HE IS A MONSTER IN DA BOOTH BUT WHEN HE GETS OUT HE LIKE A SHY PUPPY DOG… WIT HIM I THINK HE WILL NEED TO BUILD UP HIS CHARISMA MORE BEFORE THE MAINSTREAM TOTALLY ACCEPTS HIM.. HE HAS TO MAKE HIM SELF UNIQUE WITH IN DA CROWD BUT AS OF NOW HE STILL GIVES OFF DAT FOLLLOWER NOT A LEADER TYPE OF CHARISMA.. AN IN A GAME LKE THIS IT IS NOT GONNA MOVE ANY UNITS..

Wale is a diverse artist and he can walk the talk more easily than usual. He is inclined to say only those things that can be followed up with direct action. Fortunately he makes it more effortless now, which in turn will encourage others to follow his lead. Bring it home for DC and Africa(Nigeria). you dig! You bangin wit da big boys. see you when i get there WALE…
