Rap fans will be closely following the 56th Annual Grammys this Sunday to see who will scoop the Best Rap Album award. Drake, Jay Z and Kanye West are all nominated, but the front runners are Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The general consensus says that if the Seattle duo win, Kendrick — and hip-hop as a whole — will be robbed (thoughts shared by Macklemore himself). But Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were almost robbed of a nomination altogether.

According to Associated Press, several members of the Grammys’ rap committee felt the duo shouldn’t qualify for the rap categories due to their overwhelming success among pop audiences. The debate was eventually opened to members of the general Grammy committee, who voted — by a landslide — that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis should be up for the rap awards.

Do you think Macklemore & Ryan Lewis deserve to compete in the rap categories? Or do you agree that their pop appeal disqualifies them? (Or do you just really, really want to see Kendrick win?)
