M.I.A. performs “Born Free” on David Letterman, talks working w/ Nicki Minaj & fav. tracks off /\/\/\Y/\

Mikey: M.I.A seems to be receiving a lot of mixed reviews of her new album /\/\/\Y/\, credible outlets such as Billboard, Pitchfork and EW have given her less than stellar ratings. I haven’t heard the album myself but the general consensus seems to be that /\/\/\Y/\’s experimental production is just to noisy and all over the place. What do you guys think?

if the reviews are mixed, how is there a general consensus?
good reviews from Rolling Stone, LA Times, and Spin.
and honestly, EW and Billboard aren’t the place to go for real reviews.

I should of mentioned from talking with peers and friends. Personally, I couldn’t really get into her singles, so I haven’t really had the urge to get into the album yet but I will… U feelin it?

maya has never catered to the hip hop crowd…she has sprinkled a hip hop aesthetic in her music which have led to open minded tastemakers, such as Kanye, to want to sample and pass her music on to others. Expecting hip hop fans to like her shit would be a long wait underwater while holding breath…you don’t understand the context of the sample, the idea, the connection, and as a result the intended message so you don’t like the song. It’s ironic that the total D.I.Y. nature of this song would go over so many peoples heads. AS for her album….ehhhhh, it’s kinda weak…

In the Letterman Video Martin Rev from the band Suicide plays with M.I.A. The song “Born Free” is built upon a sample from their song “Ghost Rider” from Suicides first album.
It’s really nice that Martin Rev plays with her.

It is interesting that some artist want to be so different to the point their literally use drills and power tool noises to assert themselves. I thought tool sounds were dead after Home Improvement went off the air.
