Lupe loses his “Cool”…..
Posted by Miss Info under concerts , laugh at , not good for hip hop[40] Comments

When Lupe Fiasco first came started buzzing with “Kick Push” (like mid-hype, pre-flop), he performed at my boy Louis’ Kicksclusive and Karmaloop party. (big up to Shana L). The party celebrated Lupe’s cover story, there were lots of sponsors, and tons of streetwear/sneakerheads in attendance.
After about 2 hours of being told that Lupe was just about to hit the stage, many of the freshly-dressed hipsters were wilting and grumpy. So when he finally appeared, they were understandably expectant. Lupe seemed offended and berated the crowd for not having enough energy, especially since he had “just flew all the way out here from L.A.” Uh oh….. Out came some boo-birds and the hecklers.(Please note: many streetwear kids are touchy because who knows what shit they’ve already taken during the course of the day for their tight-fitting Wesc jeans.) And during “Kick Push,” Lupe threw his fitted out into the audience. And they threw it back. (snicker) Lupe responded to by saying that they should appreciate it because the hat was a limited edition something or other.
This to a crowd of 1) folks who spend their days collecting hyperstrike kicks, or 2) folks who actually make that “limited edition” streetwear. Oops.
Anyways, I just thought about that night because of the current Lupe-Gate fiasco happening right now at nahright, and okayplayer, hiphopdx and more, after Lupe forgot the lyrics to A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation” during their tribute on the VH1 Hip Hop Honors show.
Here’s the footage….
Not that big of a deal right? Lupe barely skipped a couple words. I was in the audience and I didnt even notice.
So the reason why Lupe played himself is not because he forgot the words. I’ve seen Rakim mess-up his own verse. Completely human, completely understandable and completely forgivable.
But once he got bashed by Tribe fans, he said this on Okayplayer:
I DID NOT GROW UP ON ATCQ!!!…”
THE LITTLE GHETTO KID FROM THE MEAN STREETS OF THE WESTSIDE OF CHICAGO GREW UP ON SPICE 1, 8-BALL & MJG, NWA AND SNOOP DOGG…
I WASNT A BACKPACKER RAP ENTHUSIAST!!!…I NEVER CLAIMED TO BE…I GREW UP ON GANGSTA RAP!!!
HAVE I LISTENED TO Midnight Marauders IN ITS ENTIRETY?…NO!!!…(Sorry Quest)…
GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSES AND YOUR SACRED COWS…SOME OF YA’LL MAKE ME SICK…
AND FYI WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY OFFERED TO ME I TURNED IT DOWN BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS OUT OF PLACE FOR ME TO BE HONORING THEM BECAUSE WHILE I WAS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT IN HIP-HOP I WASNT REALLY AWARE OF THEIR MUSIC LIKE THAT…BUT GUESS WHO WANTED ME TO BE APART OF IT….HMMMM…HOW ABOUT…Q-TIP!!!…
Um…well, I dont think it’s a requirement for Lupe to know ATCQ’s Midnight Marauders album backwards and forwards. He could listen to it because it was an amazing album. But its not for us to say what he should or should not love. So I personally dont agree with most of the heated debate going on right now.
My only and emphatic point is this….
Lupe Fiasco does fresh raps. But Lupe’s defense in this situation is more offensive than his original “crime.” No matter if you grew up listening to Spice 1. No matter if your BFF Q-tip asked you to be in the tribute even though you didnt want to be (and had to be dragged…wait for it…kicking and pushing into it. I’m sorry). No matter if you dont know Tribe’s work like that.
It was one verse, on one song. How about just studying that enough to get it right for one night, on national TV, with all your peers (hey, if you werent so impressed that Phife was there despite battling major kidney failure…then look over there, Snoop and Ice-T! Are they thug enough for ya?)
Nelly even did the wop for Whodini.

You’re right. Lupe is handling this all wrong. He’s made nothing into a much bigger deal. But Tribe fans (I am one of them) are rabid.:) This too shall past.

I love ya Lupe but come on man, first off how the fuck you live you whole life around hip-hop and not ever listen to Midnight Marauders. Second bashing ATCQ fans it’s a good way to endear yourself to your core audience. And third this has nothing to do with ATCQ but your new single “Superstar” sounds way to much like Kanye’s “Homecomming” I’m not necessarily saying your jocking his style but come on nigga.

Its understandable. I fuck with Lupe, his music thus far has been a good look for hip hop and I appreciate the fact that a major is giving that vein of music a chance in today’s market. So I’m a Lupe supporter, and I wanna see the guy win. And I get how ATCQ might be unimportant to a guy from his area. I’m from the midwest, in a city filled with native Chicagoans who transplanted for one gang or bullet related reason or another, and he’s right. Not too many people were checkin for that sound back then. Definately no one our age (LF is the same age as me). And backpackers really are hip hop’s hippie elitest douchebags. Not to say that Tribe fans are all backpackers (I rock with Tribe and never once had the urge to grow a soul patch or demonize all things commercially viable in hip hop). So I get how he could’ve fucked that up. I get why he’s spazzin out on his ‘core fans’ who have historically ’supported’ him by not buying his album. I get how maybe he didn’t have the time or the ‘give a fuckness’ to learn 16-32 bars. I understand it all. What I don’t understand, is why everyone is so besides themselves they could be their own siamese twin. The guy’s name is Fiasco.

I think Lupe is great, one of the best things happening in hip-hop right now.. BUT I can understand why Lupe’s attitude bothers people..
You gotta keep in mind the context for this, which is that Lupe has had an ongoing fight for like 2 years now with his core fanbase on Okayplayer, specifically about the Midnight Marauders album! lol..
When his fans acted surprised that he’d never been into tribe or owned Midnight Marauders, he got weird and petulant about it, like “whatever, I never listened to that album and I never will!” It came off as sorta arrogant, lacking respect for the culture/history that he lives off of. So his ornery boycott of Midnight Marauders has been a running joke/beef ever since.. and now this!
It’s exactly what you said, his defensive reactions tend to make little things turn bigger (it also happened in this weird argument on my friend Wes Jackson’s blog).. and again I have utmost respect for Lupe, but as such a smart dude he needs to handle scrutiny/criticism with more savvy.

How the F*ck Lupe “The Asshole” (formerly Lupe Fiasco) gonna say he didnt grow up on ATCQ and he’s not a backpacker…..
N*gga please ATCQ and backpacker flow/issues/content is all in ur DNA. Who u think bought and downloaded those 300k+ units of ur album…it damn sure wasn’t Spice 1 or NWA fans.
This is why I don’t even like to give some of these weirdos a chance at listening to their music. Any1 whose ever heard more than 2 rap songs in their life can see that Lupe Fiasco saying he didn’t listen to/wasn’t inspired by ATCQ is like Stevie Wonder saying he’s never heard Ray Charles and wasn’t inspired by him…It’s laughable.
I was never a fan of this guy because he seemed like a second rate version of a Pharell/Kanye clone….Now I won’t even give listening to his music a shot. I’m not even a backpacker fan but I’m waaaaay less of a fan of ppl who have an identity crisis and complain and make up dumb ass excuses.

@jay smooth….oh thats interesting! thanks for the context. So this has been an ongoing struggle. But it still doesnt change for me the only thing….its just one verse, nobody asked you to memorize the whole discography, lol. And like my boy FWMJ said, it was a Phife verse, lol. (no dis)

Definitely was understandable until he came out with that statement. That kinda blew his point of view (“everyone makes mistakes”) out of the water….. but damn how do you not listen to midnight marauders. Thats right alongside illmatic in terms of classics. To me, this kinda puts to question his character…
And I didnt know Phife is sick….that is crazy, hope he gets better.

Can all the Lupe fans please explain to me how u grew up on “gangster” rap and all YOUR rap is consicious???
It doesn’t make sense that he says he wasn’t influenced by ATCQ. He talks about the same topics as ATCQ but with an “updated” flow. And he has a god-awful sense of fashion (just like ATCQ had….j/k I kid, I kid…but 4real)….
I’m 26 so Lupe is either my age or maybe 2 years younger….Every1 at least listened to ATCQ in ADDITION to gangster rap cause at that time (early 90’s) Hip Hop was a big melting pot and it wasn’t uncommon to have a copy of Cube’s tape AND a copy of ATCQ.
I understand that they dont have to be his favorite group…But he’s saying his style isn’t influenced by them and that’s just crazy. Lupe ain’t influenced by ATCQ and Michael Jordan wasn’t influenced by Dr. J and Mike Tyson wasn’t influenced by Jack Johnson and Chris Brown ain’t inspired by Michael Jackson, etc, etc, etc…lol

Jay Smooth, it hasn’t been 2 years. He made the MM comment in December, and from then his core fanbase, all those smelly, detestable non pussy gettin backpackers immediately had an issue with him, as anyone that’s a hip hop head from the 90s and is serious about the quality of the music they listen to, holds Midnigh Marauders somewhere in their tape deck.
It aint so much that dude ain’t listened to the albums, god knows there’s some old timey albums from the 80s i haven’t heard yet, as there’s no time to catch up on everything but, the issue of him being a jerk about never wanting to listen to it at all when it’s considered a classic in the genre by anyone that knows their ass from their elbow like he’d even have a lane if it weren’t for native tongue groups. f*ck his cute sneakers.

And if Tip is your buddy, then don’t crow about not knowing to his music “like that.” Wikipedia is free. : )

I totally understand the cross roads cities not on either coast had when it comes to what was bumpin in their cities. Sure you can imagine, back in Texas you had your cats that listened to laundry list of expected East (read: New York) Coast acts, as well as the West Coast and Bay Area joints, not to mention those early Screw tapes back in the early 90s, Suave House, Swisha House, Rap A Lot. But tryin to be sideways about the very cats that paved a yellow brick road for you to skip on to the emerald city of hip hop glory with your 200,000 copy moving album, is, well, short sighted and juvenile. You straight up profit, like monetarily, because Tribe dropped records. Even if you heard the shit thru 2007 ears and thought it was wack, you just shut up and play your role. What’s even more annoying is folks equating with A Tribe Called Quest as just Q-Tip like he the only one who got a say. Lupe is talented as hell, he’s just a blockhead (Charlie Brown) and played himself. It was a Phife verse! It wasn’t some tongue twisting Chino XL, Elzhi, Juice verse, shit it wasn’t even a Lupe Fiasco verse. It was a Phife Dawg, 1993 verse! On Electric Relaxation.
10…9…8…1, i’m calm again. What a knucklehead though.

One random thought while reading this…I was first getting into hip hop when “Low End Theory” came out, and Tribe was like my favorite group. And I remember reading an article where Q-Tip listed his favorite rap albums, and it included “Amerikkka’s Most Wanted.” I couldn’t understand how Tribe could like or be influenced in any way by someone as hardcore as Ice Cube. I was young and immature then…now, Lupe’s out of his lane (and his mind) saying he doesn’t care about Tribe, but I can understand how influence doesn’t always happen in straightforward ways.
By the way, you guys saw the Tom Breihan interview with Q-Tip about a month ago, right? He spoke on the whole thing with Lupe saying he doesn’t like Tribe. Maybe this whole VH1 thing was Tip trying to reach out to the dude because of this.

Hope Phife gets better.
Who is LF’s publicist? It’s just not a good look to diss your core fan base by dissing ATCQ especially since(like been mentioned above) ATCQ is in your rhyme DNA. His age argument about he’s only 25 and ATCQ is before his time holds no weight, NWA’s last album dropped in ‘91, Tribe’s Love Movement dropped in ‘98. His homeboy Pharrell claims to be “the biggest Tribe fan.” Just doesn’t make sense for him to not at least of heard MM one time. Everyone has their own preferences but damn. If I was making a list of hip hop albums that are required listening, MM is definitely on that list.
As far as backpackers go…with them you’re damned if you and damned if you don’t. Don’t sell enough albums and they complain, sell too many albums and you’ve “sold out.” I remember backpackers bitchin about QTip’s Amplified with ‘Breathe and Stop’ and Vivrant Thing’ being “too jiggy.” The irony in those statements is those songs were produced by the late, great Jay Dilla, who’s now sacred to backpackers. Can’t please backpackers but still gotta respect ‘em if they make up your fan base.
The remedy for all this could be for Lupe to drop a mixtape over just Tribe beats specifically instrumentals from MM. Incorporate some tribe rhymes, call up ATCQ, Pharrell, Kanye, Common, Black Thought etc for a verse or two and knock it out in a week. No time needed for production, the beats are already done, lol and he could spit some of the verses from his upcoming album. That would make everyone happy, redeem Lupe in backpacker eyes and possibly be a classic mixtape. Oh wait, LF said he wasn’t doing mixtapes anymore.

He didn’t do that bad on the song but he did play him self by getting so mad. I was never the biggest tribe fan but I give them niggas props, and its an honor for a legendary group like them to even ask you to perform. People take shit for granted, I wish somebody like them would ask me to cover one of their songs. He should’ve not even responded on some real shit, he’s a celebrity. But niggas online talk extra greasy and say shit they would never say in person and hearing so much negative shit probably pissed him off. I’m pretty sure were gonna hear a Lupe apoligy soon anyway. I like his music, and I think he’s talented but he shouldv’e not even got sucked in to that bullshit. About a week ago Kanye forgot the lyrics to his own song but he went on with the show and didn’t complain about it. I’m pretty sure the bloggers were talking
shit. oh well, to each’s own.

@ FWMJ…Missinfo…JaySmooth…
Im hollering at you guys because I just feel that you feel what I feel…(Sorry Missinfo, I had to).
The point is this: YES, he’s being a dick about it. YES, he shouldve gone back and studied it or not peform it at all. YES, yes, yes. BUT….
AT LEAST He’s being honest. He’s being true…Minus the part where he’s bragging about Tip asking him…He’s keeping it real. And even though his piss poor cocky attitude left a sour taste in my mouth…I had to pause and think. And you know I gotta give the guy props for being true.
Let’s face it…The backpacker movement is similar (if not the same even) to the streetwear movement. Buncha cats playing catch up…and clinging on to this sub-culture, basically dick-riding ANYTHING… I mean ANYTHING… underground/independant or whatever and SHITTING on the mainstream. Love me some Supreme gear, and some Def Jux tracks…But I’d rock some Sean John if I found something nice…and bump a 50 track here and there…Cuz that to me, is keeping it real. Keepin it real to whom? Keeping it real to me. Staying true to who I am is what Hip Hop taught me.
Many of these backpackers/streetwear cats have this private-club attitude… When it’s exactly the OPPOSITE of what the music is trying to teach them. They try to create this exclusive feel like they grew up on certain aspects of the culture when the reason they can cop the gear they copped and cop the albums they copped and were able to go to the concerts they went to… was because they were able to save up their 3 figure weekly allowance and borrow mom & pops whip to drive up to the places that offered such things. Im not hating, if you were better off than me g, thats cool…Im in the industry now so I know how it is on the inside of these groups…Im not big on it. So lets keep it real here…I heard most of the MM album on this late night/early morning local university radio show they had back then…same with Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt…took mad time before I copped the tapes…I didnt have the loot…(Owned that Black Sheep tho…definitely) I had never owned a pair of Jordans until I was like…17-18..And God KNOWS what I was involved in back then to afford them…I could go on and on…But my point is simple…Many Tribe fans…jus like many subculture fans (like streetwear) are followers of other TRUE fans… and not actual followers of the craft in question…they jus wanna belong to the club…PERIOD…dont come on here with this fake ass…”YO! TRIBE IS A CLASSIC!!!! SO and SO is a legend BLAH BLAH BLAH” when the only reason you’re saying this…is because your boy who’s really a fan..goes bananas everytime he hears “Oh My God”…SO GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK…Straight up. I dont usually cuss..but shit…it pisses me off.
To the true fans: I feel you about the whole Lupe thing…but as a true fan myself…I still gotta say give the guy a break. The guy don’t wanna study it..then let it be. Dont crucify him for it. The guy is being truthful…Dont fly off the handle and call him fake because the ONE thing he’s not being here is fake.
In the end…his real mistake is performing it. That’s fake to me…Even if Tip asked you g…Tell him you can’t..cuz it wouldnt be right. Thats my beef with it. But he dont have to like tribe, just as much as I never really listened to Spice 1..but Love Ice Cube’s Lethal Injection and D.O.C. stuff.

@pablo…oh, I dont rep the backpackers. Jay S can tell you, lol…I rep no clique. In fact, I think Lupe is a perfect spokesman for the “backpack”…er…pack. Because in many of the most vocal cases, they feel ennobled for no good deed, entitled to what’s not theirs to claim, and condescending to everyone. Its all window dressing. Like wearing 90’s gear but not liking 90’s music….
I dunno. Its late, so I’m not all there but I do know it annoys me.

Actually, it makes perfect sense that Lupe hasn’t ever heard ATCQ before. He really aint that hot (and please believe me when I say that this aint no post Lupe-Gate hate). When I first heard Kick Push, I was like wow, it reminds me of a typical Hip-Hop record from the early ’90s (which I’ll concede was refreshing). His lyrics were OK at best however. The record with Jill Scott…eh. He sounds like a Kanye, minus a star’s charisma. So it makes sense that he’s never heard A Tribe Called Quest album before…maybe if he had, he’d be a bit doper. I can’t understand what the buzz is ab out this guy, he’s a mediocre MC, on mediocre tracks with a less than mediocre personality! I’m pissed off I even gave this bullshit my energy! LOL
And for the record, I wasn’t a big fan of the Midnight Marauders album either. Low End Theory was the “be all end all” for me, but I definitely can appreciated their movement. That said, much like pablo P, I got the new 50 in my truck’s CD player.

First of all, why do you guys gotta jock on Lupe all the time, sure he fucked up and he was being a dick about it, but look at how many other rappers were beings dicks, like kanye at the mtv awards, bagging on britney cause he never won an award? Like FUCK MAN i dont see anyone blogging about that nonsense, but when Lupe does something stupid or makes a mistake, people are all up on his grill, and how would you guys feel if suddenly you got a ton of hate mail from ATCQ fans, wouldn’t you be pissed too? SO NEXT TIME your about to diss Lupe on your fucking blogs, and note that Lupe is a breath of fresh air in the hiphop game.

Who is Lupe’s Publicist?
Exactly! He doesn’t have one probably and who does. there aren’t any middle men any more. all of our heroes are very accessable right now…especially these OKP cats.
funny, this reminds me of LILWAYNE-Gate when he got caught kissing Baby in the mouth…that was a shit storm too. especially online…Wayne handled the situation the same way! By talking alot of shit to the media…that nigga Still mad at Jay Z…but he also countered it with Dope Lyrics and a million and one cameos…
these same elitists think T PAYNE can’t sing…what does Payne do…show up on everybody’s album (including KANYE)
contrary to what everyone is saying…i don’t think Lupe should come down off his “high horse” just yet. I think he could actually afford to stick his neck out there a little further to create real discourse about the subject.
another point: what i think is really goin on here is an attack on the whole elitist/backpacker mentality that seems to drag down the whole genre…
