On Monday, many Big Boi fans were excited to see his long-awaited collaboration with Little Dragon titled “Mama Told Me” was finally releasing. There was one problem though, the version Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex premiered that night didn’t include the Swedish indie-pop group headed by Yukimi Nagano, instead she was replaced by Kelly Rowland. Instantly the Outkast memeber responded to the confusion, possibly hinting at its release in the near future. While the single for Big Boi’s upcoming Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors album (Nov. 13) won’t include Little Dragon, the group’s publicist explains to FADER what happened.
“It is true that Little Dragon made the “Mama Told Me” track with Big Boi and even performed it live in Austin for The FADER. The whole collaboration was an amazing creative experience. Unfortunately, business terms out of our control got in the way, and an agreement couldn’t be reached in time for our version of the track to be released. At least new friendships were made, and we want to wish Big Boi good luck with the album. We look forward to collaborating with him in the future.”
We first saw a live performance of the song back in August for FADER and Vitamin Water’s “Uncapped” concert series, hosted by our own Miss Info. You can watch Big Boi and Little Dragon’s perform “Mama Told Me” in Austin, Texas after the jump….
FADER and Vitamin Water brought their intimate live uncapped series to Austin, Texas. The event, hosted by our own Miss Info, turned out to be another packed evening filled with good vibes and live performances. It also served as a night of firsts, as Swedish indie-pop group Little Dragon was joined by Outkast’s Big Boi to perform their new record, “Mama Told Me.” Back in October of last year, Big Boi tweeted a video of himself and Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano working in-studio on two records for his upcoming Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors album due November 13. Nagano recently spoke with Rolling Stone on how the disco-funk record came to fruition.
They had no such problems collaborating with Big Boi. Nagano contributed vocals to the track “Momma Told Me,” and unlike most features these days, she actually got to work with Big Boi and not just his computer.
“We were in Atlanta and just kind of had a day together, it was one of those rare things where we met and had a vibe,” Nagano said.
Little Dragon might make a collective appearance on Big Boi’s album as well. “We produced one song that we gave to him,” Wallin said. Since it’s not their album and he is unsure if the track will make the final cut, he didn’t want to give away the title.”
