Lil Wayne gets the swaggerjacker treatment….
Posted by Miss Info under hmmm....? , videos[21] Comments
Hey, it’s happened to Hov and Cam….but what I wonder if people are even offended when an artist references another artist’s lyrics? Is it homage? Or laziness? Or flattery?
Do certain lines sound better when Lil Wayne delivers them? Does any of this even matter?
The only thing that feels funny to me is that, in the case of the endless Biggie lyric sampling (not just from Weezy, but from everyone), if you’re not familiar with the original (which the kids are increasingly not), then you won’t even recognize that you’re hearing a reference?

jebus, this swagger jacking compilation phenomenon is strictly due to 15y/o’s on a mac downloading some “old school” and putting a video on youtube. They do the same shit with samples, like “you like nuthin’ but a G thing by Dr dre? well guess what? he stole it? just listen (play the leon haywood, then the dre track) sounds awfully similar…coincidence?”
Quoting line is never a problem to me. imo its a tip of a hat to an mc or rhyme you respect that other heads should recognize. If you’re not versed enough to have caught it, people get mad later on some shit like ‘quoter’ was trying to pull a fast one on listeners…I’m embarrassed when I don’t recognize one, and when I find out where its from i’ll go back and take a listen to the source cause most likely it’s noteworthy, if someone i respect today mentions it.

I’m tired of this freaking argument. Biggie used the entire PSK chorus for the interlude! Let’s just acknowledge this is a tip of the cap, and move onto more pressing issues, like why Soulja Boy is a viable commodity. Snap n Roll? WTF dude. When is GZA going to literally slap the ish outta this kid? Like The Backfist Cometh.

above the law’s “black mafia life” + swagger jacking = dr. dre’s “the chronic”
and i think it’s safe to say that dre wasn’t tryna pay homage to above the law when he recorded “the chronic”. we’re talking concepts, hooks, and samples here, not just a quoted line or two.
when i catch someone referencing someone else’s lyrics it sort of has the same effect of being let in on an inside joke. most people won’t know what the hell you’re talking about, but that’s why it’s an inside joke. it’s for those that do know.

homage is one thing! but these dudes take it to far. most of them lil wayne joints are freestyles, uhm freestyles so someone elses rhymes shouldnt be on your mind when uhm freestyling. is it even freestlying anymore. and why does soulja boy exist, this is the ringtone era, his album isnt even gold and hes hotter than fish grease to some! everyone needs to be original with the lyrics! i dont mind beat sampling, just because youre using the beat doesnt mean you use the same lyrics! i cant put sixteen together but i know not to borrow lyrics!

I always took this kind of sampling as a tribute, you have to be real stupid to steal lines from Biggie or Pac and think that nobody’ll find out…

^that’s the point being made, most people dont even realize it at this point, which says something about the state of hip hop, or the age of most of us, ill leave it in the air
I get paying homage to someone, or Jigga payin respect to a dude he came up with in some way, but this mu’fucker is takin lines from Webby Dre3000, Jada (Gangsta’s dont die, they get chubby and move to miami?!?! please)
The worst part about all this, is that Weezy was at his illest when he was 17 and not jackin other dudes swagger and had his own…

This is ridiculous….Everyone jacks everyone else’s swagger…The reason Jay-Z is a chump is that he says “if i’m not better than big….” yet he has the audacity to steal a biggie line in nearly EVERY song he puts out…shit was hot when big said it first…the swagger jackin is the reason jay-z needs to get out of the shower cause he’s washed up
