(thanks to QDIII for the link)
According to the filmmakers:

AMERICA opens at the IFC Theatre in New York starting Friday 23
January. Stacy Peralta will be doing a Q&A for the 7:45pm screenings
on the 23rd and 24th.

Saw the midnight show at IFC this past Friday. Had to say Ive pretty much seen every doc and read and major book that has to do with Crips and Bloods. Wasn’t really no surprise but the personal stories were great. If you’ve ever wanted the full story I’d recommend the trip. But IFC’s wack Miss Info, they don’t have Nachos!!!

I hide thai food in my pocketbook and bring it in the movie theater along with a battery-charged blender for smoothies.

as for the movie….is it better than the HBO docs? Those were very sobering to me. (although I have yet to see a good doc on the chicago gang culture that I group up with. I dont want to get into an argument about it but when I was younger the older guys would tell me that chicago’s black p-stone rangers were the predecessors to the crips in LA? And that the El Rukns were the oldest Black gang organization? Either way, I know when alot of the midwest gang culture that was on HBO’s Bangin in Little Rock etc was derivative from Chicago gangs. Dubious honor, of course.

Yea its actually better than the docs but I think the best ones wont get great light. A good one to see is “Bastards of the party” directed by Athens Park Blood member Bone. Next time you rolling out hit me up. Ill sneak in some Jerk Chicken!

Nice post Info.
As an ex knucklehead that used to claim VL back on Chicago’s South Side I have a long time deep seated interest in seeing the kids change their wannabe gang banging ways. Especially now that I’m back here in LA where the kids are even more lost than any knucklehead from Chicago ever was. These kids got it bad. Damn.
I have 2 things to say about this:
1. Why isn’t it shown for free at Magic Johnson’s Cinema in LA and Uptown in Harlem?
The people that need to see this aren’t going to the indie film cinemas in NYC. They are broke and in the hood in LA and NY.
2. When this leaves the theater it should be given away with a mix tape or something to make sure the most kids see it.
Again, this shouldn’t be treated like an art project. If they are trying to be real about the intentions then they better not try to cake off from this project.

VERY INTERESTING IDEA….yeah its crazy how in many cases the best examples of doc films never reach the actual communities that they go indepth about. But that’s the whole sociology/anthropology of it. People studying subcultures for documentation. In some cases, there are like academic rules about not effecting or changing the lives of the groups/communities that you study even.
The other thing is….sometimes these docs actually have the opposite effect. How many white suburban kids got a battery in their back after seeing Banging in Little Rock?
So, you were People, eh? very interesting. Def gives you another level of context when it comes to things. Especially the Chicago system which was a highly organized and disciplined gang culture. There was a culture shock that I went through when I came to NY and saw how gangs were more of a chaotic form of teen rebellion here.

Lil Wayne is one of the best people to say something because fifty million teenagers think he’s the bees knees. That’s exactly why he should be denouncing gangs and gang violence every chance he gets.
Props Info, I’ll go take my family to see this if we can.

I have watched both docs, and while I liked the personal stories in Made In America, I think Cle/”Bone”‘s (Inactive member of the Athens Park Bloods)Bastards of the Party is much more informative and closer to the streets. I grew up on South Central LA, and can attest to the difficulties of pulling yourself out of that shit. I saw many people die within blocks of my home and it’s an oppressive environment to say the least. Without my college football scholarship, who the F know’s where I’d be right now.

Good doc, the best? i don’t know! lil wayne and snoop don’t need to say shit about nothing they brage about all the money they got and don’t do nothing to help the place they rap about. get in the streets you are affraid to go to and help the kids get away from the guns show them thers better things to look forword to and i am not talking about some fake @ss show on tv with ur kids and fake wife!!!!!!!
