From N.W.A and OutKast to Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest, it seems like the majority of hip-hop groups have gone through a separation period, or at least had a rough patch. But according to Kendrick Lamar, rap’s new super power, Black Hippy, won’t suffer the same fate.

Sitting down with Guerilla Union to discuss the origins of the TDE collective, K. Dot explains how ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock and himself decided to find their own identity and build their own buzz before announcing themselves as a unit to not only avoid creative conflicts, but to avoid the stigma of rap groups breaking up. Let’s hope their prophecy stays true.

We just did it the other way around, and it’s working, because everybody can identify with Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Q. And then when it come together, it’s Black Hippy, and they know it’s bigger than that.
