A verse hasn’t gripped hip-hop fans like this in a long time. To summarize, ladies and gentleman, Kendrick Lamar showed up on Big Sean’s “Control (HOF)” to shatter the earth last night. His nearly three-minute lyrical tirade was highlighted by K. Dot crowning himself “King of New York” and putting a bounty on the head of almost every relevant new school rapper.
An immediate contender for verse of the year, it’s sure to be one of those guest verses that’ll go down in history — not simply because he washed Sean on his own track and rendered a closing Jay Electronica verse an “oh yeah” afterthought, but because he essentially stamped all over the “tread lightly” (word to Heisenberg) etiquette hip-hop’s been adhering to for years now. Names were named, and the bar was raised.
If there’s anything better than K. Dot’s verse, however, it’s the reactions. Since Funkmaster Flex premiered the record on Hot97 last night, the rap Twittersphere has been entirely engrossed. From hilarious commentary and acute observations, to fellow MCs welcoming the competition and others catching feelings, here are the best reactions to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control (HOF)” verse.
