Fans have been waiting and it looks like Watch The Throne, the collaborative album from Kanye West & Jay-Z is completed and set to release on July 4th. Combat Jack notes that a source very close to the project has confirmed the date which is three weeks away, this comes on the day Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music family are set to headline Heineken’s Red Star Access summer concert series in New York City. There’s a possibility that Jay will join ‘Ye to announce the date and possibly premiere a new song off the project.
Props to The Source
UPDATE from MissInfo: um….I wouldn’t put any bets on that July 4th date. I know that’s the word on the street, North…but from what I’m hearing, they’re going back into the lab….AGAIN. *scratches head* What’s interesting is that we almost had a version of Watch The Throne get released digitally back when “H.A.M.” dropped so many months ago. That didn’t happen mostly because of the angry pushback from the biggest retail chain who don’t want to see a name like Jay-Z stray from traditional bricks-n-mortar distribution. The only weapon the chains have? They can threaten to hide your followup releases with less than ideal shelf placement.

I appreciate that they aren’t going the MBDTF route and releasing half of the songs for free on the net before releasing the album. There’s still a month left so who knows, though.

With more and more people buying digital albums, who cares what the retails threaten?

it’s still not equal….you overestimate the speed that middle america adapts to tech

^Exactly. Digital only releases aren’t going to be the norm any time soon.
Good idea for artist with a more “specific” fanbase. But Hov & ‘Ye? Two of the biggest acts in music (not just Hip Hop)? Not the smartest idea.

Actually it’s closer than you may think. Digital sales makes up 50% of purchased music. Plus straight digital would be cheaper. I see it happening within at lest the next 2-3 years.

^ 50% isn’t enough for a major label or artist to FULLY hop on that bandwagon. You may see some test the waters with small projects here and there. But total elimination of physical albums within the next 2-3 years? No way. It’s going to take some time. No prominent artist has even toyed with the idea thus far.
