Kanye West & Jay-Z Feat. Otis Redding – “Otis” (Lyrics):
[Jay-Z]
Sounds so soulful don’t you agree
I invented swag
Poppin bottles putting supermodels in the cab
Proof
I guess I got my swagger back
Truth: new watch alert, Hublot’s
Or the big face Rollie I got two of those
Arm out the window through the city I maneuver slow
Cock back, snap back
See my cut through the holes
[Kanye West]
Damn Yeezy and Hov,
Where the hell ya been?
Niggas talkin real reckless: stuntman
I adopted these niggas, Phillip Drummond them
Now I’m bout to make them tuck they whole summer in
They say I’m crazy but I’m ’bout to go dumb again
They aint see me cause I pulled up in my other Benz
Last week I was in my other other Benz
Throw your diamonds up cause we in this bitch and up again
[Jay-Z]
Photo shoot fresh
Looking like wealth
I’m about to call the paparazzi on myself
Uh, live form the Mercer, run up on Yeezy the wrong way
I might murk ya
Flee in the G450 I might surface
Political refugee asylum can be purchased
Uh, everythings for sale, I got 5 passports
I’m never going to jail
[Kanye West]
I made Jesus walks so never going to hell
Couture level flow is never going on sale
Luxury rap, the Hermes of verses
Sophisticated ignorance
Write my curses in cursive
I get it custom
You a customer
You aint accustomed to going through customs
You aint been nowhere huh?
And all the ladies in the house got them showing off
I’m done I hit ya up, manana!
[Jay-Z]
Welcome to Havanna
Smoking Cubana’s with Castro in Cabana’s
Viva Mexico, Cubana, Dominicano
All the plugs that I know
Driving Benz’s, With no benefits
Not bad huh? for some immigrants
Build your fences, we diggin’ tunnels
Can’t you see we gettin money up under you
[Kanye]
Can’t you see the private jets flying over you
Maybach bumper sticker read “What would Hova do?”
Jay is chillin, Ye is chillin
What more can I say
We killin’ ‘em
Hold up before we in this campaign
As you can see we bodied the damn lames
Lord please let them accept the things they cant change
And pray that all of their pain be champagne
Thanks to KillerHipHop!

song sucks. not surprised. It sounds like the wack version of “The Joy”
Otis is probably rolling in his grave.
I’m waiting for the hipsters/others to jump on this and claim this is amazing, and that my taste in hip hop is shit and I must listen to Wayne/Drake/et al
when I’m probably more familiar with hip hop and Otis than these newbies are.

@StrawberryPoptarts
I remember the Hate Me Now, That dropped the same night Belly opened up! He was dropping bombs when I went in the movie and was still playing it when we left.
@jd
Sorry junior, excessive loud hype isn’t “Hip Hop” maybe thats what folk are calling it today but this was the same “Breaking a Record” that went down with H.A.M, Black Friday and every other joint that people snapped their necks over and in 48 hrs were done with it. I’d trade the hype for longevitiy.
I’m looking forward to the album, just tempering my excitement w/ a lil patience.

But personally, I thought this song was dope. And yes, Ye once again overshadowed Jay (Jay still came off though. I’m starting to believe the student has surpassed the teacher.

I know a lot of you will disagree, because some of you refuse to believe that Jay-Z & Kanye can’t make a bad song. I’m hear to inform you that is not a gem. If I wanted to hear dudes rap over a soul song I would listen to Ghostface’s “Holla” You want better hip hop? Let your fave artists know they missed the mark when they put out “gaw-badge”

It’s just painful.
Of course the journalists, instead of being real, they’re towing the corporate line and making up bullshit like “you can’t have preconceived notions blah blah” which means “it’s a weak product but we can’t say it’s weak because we want Jay-z gift packages.”

Cause when you kick knowlege you end up like mos def, talib, etc… Great artist but cant sell platinum records….This game be on CRACK yall dont know what yall want… When is good is WACK and bullshit music is tHE SHIT….. weezy and drake aint gonna save hip hop…. drake hits are with other artist…Can he hold it on his own. Weezy alreay has showed he can… But his popularity is slowly dying and if c4 doesn’t win he gonna lose…. Some quick thoughts…..
I’m not sure if I agree the with the mostly reactionary first assessment of this song. Over the years I have learn that Jay-z And kanye’s music gets better over time.
This might not be the strongest of choices for a first single. But we have to keep in mind that both Kanye And Jay are coming from two Monumentally successful Albums. Regardless on what anyone opinions on the overall quality on those albums. In addition, we as “fans” have wildly high expectations on this Product.
I’m not in love with Jay actual rhymes, but I do love the rhyme pattern both of them are employing on this song.
The only thing that I have to say it is that this song feels more like a TRAILER for the Album. I think it is a little too short for my taste.
I was expecting something much worse to tell the truth. Too often this type of project come up short.

Some of these people have some nerve questioning the dopeness of this track. I just heard a pitbull song, a rosco dash song and a waka flacka song back to back to back on hot 97 so “Otis!” and vintage hip hop like it is a blessing and should be treated as such considering the alternative. The track is perfect, it sounds like something pete rock or RZA would’ve done in there prime, in fact I can hear Ghost all over this right now as if it was a track from supreme clientele. The back and forth is tight not quite Jada and Stypes P tight, those dudes do back and forth like no one else but still dope. The lyrics are stunnin at it’s best C’mon son “Hermes of verses sophisticated ignorance I write my curses in cursive” CRAZY! on first listen Ye murders this but as usual if you pay attention Hov’s no slouch either all in all a great song not sure if it’s a great single but its def a great hip hop song!

@Nightfall
“excessive loud hype” isn’t hip hop? First off youngin Oits track is isn’t just hype it’s a hot song but the notion that hip hop wasn’t built off “loud Type” is ludicrous, do your home work! Boom box loud rapper in the park(excessive loud hype), big cipher at the lunch table(excessive loud hype), DJ’s screaming over the microphone……whether at the park, house party, club or on radio(Flex) or a mixtape(DJ Clue) are all “excessive loud hype”, cars, trucks sound systems became famous because of hip-hop- “excessive loud hype”. So I can continue to educate you on how Flex “excessive loud hype” is and always be part of hip-hop and that’s why I love it! Big ego, battling…I am better than you rapping; the competition aspect is the core of hip hop it’s what hip-hop was built on. That’s what makes this song so great! So when Flex as one of the most important DJ’s is hip-hop history breaks a record and shows is passion by talking shit and dropping bombs over and over for me no matter the song no matter if I like the song or not that passion what Flex shows when he breaks or gets behind a record is what makes hip-hop sooooooo different from any other music genre. I love hip-hop and that Otis record and Flex playing it for 30mins straight jumping bombs…..Classic!

songs from a certain era are “unsampleable”. therefore, otis’s work can’t be sampled. it can, but it won’t sound pleasing. it would be like trying to sample songs from the 1930’s,40’s. anything pre 70’s can’t be sampled effectively, except for classical music, but that’s an entirely different century, so, yeah. this song sucks shark nuts.

Is there something going wrong with Americans across the nation? It seems as though we have to either hate something or love it, no in-betweens. What’s with this extremist behavior? From our politicians all the way down to the lowest denominator, it seems as though Americans are at war with each other.
I mean damn, this song isn’t all that great to me, but it damn sure isn’t whack.
