Directed by Kanye (co-directed by Alexandre Moors), the film stars Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls in love with a blind Arabian princess. Senior editor at GQ Magazine, Logan Hill sums up the storyline below.
“Cruel Summer is the story of a Lamborghini car thief who falls for a beautiful blind Arabic girl who’s father will let them marry if he can help her see. So he (Kid Cudi) does using strings that lead her around palace to play music. Kanye West says it’s a work in progress but it’s wildly stylish, huge booming soundtrack, Vanessa beecroft production design. Immersive fun. Kanye says he had to get script approval in Qatar. He needed 20 camels, 100 extras, and around 20 Lambos. His female star (Sarah A., an intern at Doha Film Institute, pictured above) is the star of Cruel Summer.
The film features fashion he designed and pieces by local Arabic designers, shot in 4 days, 3 months start to almost-finish. Amanda Palmer of Doha Film Inst says Cruel Summer will premiere November 19 as part of festival in Doha.”
During the screening, Kanye explained to viewers his vision when coming up with the setup at Cannes.
“It related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we’re always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies,” West said. “I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together. I’m not the best director in the world, but I had an idea that I thought would be amazing to inspire people, like a dream of one day this being the way people watch movies. You know, Tarantino doing a movie like this or a horror movie like this, animation, 3-D … in this form that surrounds you. People want to go back and see it more and more because they missed something to their left or to their right, and it feels more like the experience of life.”
Comedian Aziz Ansari makes an appearance in the flick, along with many of Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music family. The film was based on a screenplay by Elon Rutberg, and shot entirely in Qatar less than a month ago. Cruel Summer the film is now open for the public in Cannes until May 25, while the G.O.O.D. Music compilation album of the same name is due later this year.
