After enjoying a breakout year in 2016 thanks to her debut mixtape A Good Night In the Good Ghetto, 2017 has been a different story for Kamaiyah. Despite making it onto the XXL Freshman cover, the Bay Area rapper lost her brother to cancer earlier this year while sample clearance issues have left her long-awaited major label debut Don’t Ever Get It Twisted in limbo.

Last night, however, Kamaiyah returned with Before I Wake, a new 10-track mixtape released independent of her label, Interscope. “This past year has been extremely hard for me,” she wrote on Instagram. “I lost my brother to cancer and went through extreme depression. Creatively I felt trapped with my project being held up due to samples. I lost my way and decided to take initiative by recording and putting together music for my fans all on my own because I felt it was time. Thank you for everyone who has been patient, this is only the beginning.”
