Joey Bada$$ is establishing himself as an artist that comes to the table with thought provoking visuals every time. In the video for “Like Me,” the Pro Era rapper tackles the subject of unarmed black men getting murdered by police officers. “In the video, the hot-headed guy, he gets killed by the police with a gun in his hand,” Joey tells Mother Jones. “And me, the cool guy, who is away from all the violence, I still end up being mixed in the loop—just being a victim because of my surroundings or where I’m from.”
Along with references to the stories of Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown, Bada$$ hopes things change for the better in the near future. “I pray that there is hope. But even the fact that I have to dream like that is what’s disturbing. My message is that it can happen to any one of us.” First debuted on The Tonight Show, “Like Me” is off Joey’s B4.DA.$$ debut album out now.
