Jim Jones tells Miss Info: I spent 8 million at Sony before Hov came. Capo Makes me a free agent again!
Posted by Mikey Fresh under Crony-ism , Exclusives , Videos[54] Comments
So last week, during our visit to Jimmy’s studio, a lot of things came to light. After Capo went over his frustrations with Koch rushing the album out (Jim’s 5th album, Capo, dropped this past Tuesday), Harlem’s hardest working hustler broke down exactly how his last album, Pray IV Reign, was created at Sony.
Update: Miss Info asked Jimmy about the VIBE news that a Dipset EP is on the way: Jim says the guys are working on an independent release from the group on July 4th, and that Koch may distribute but all the members are cleared and songs are in the making. Sounds like new Dipset will be right on time for Summer Jam?!”
“I’m a little bit disappointed in the way the album came out. I felt like the album was so dope, then you deal with some politics in the game that are way out of your control. When you deal with something so crazy sometimes you get disappointed… I really really did not want to come out on April 5th,” Jim continues. “The album is super dope. This is why I am even more disappointed because if I had the chance to market and promote the album the way I needed to who knows what could have happened.
“Then you deal with a situation where you back is up against the wall. For the sake of the label’s business, you sacrifice your art.”
Jim breaks down what went down with his last major label album.
“My last album was at Sony. I got to spend a lot of money over there. I had a fun time over there. Shouts to Hip-Hop and Al Branch. They were working my album over there. But 6 weeks before my album was supposed to come out both of them quit. So the marketing strategy drastically changed. The amount of records I was promised by the label changed drastically.
“So with the so called “consolidation” the number [of records] I was promised would be shipped changed.”
“With spending close to 8-million dollars or something close to that at Sony I figured I’m pretty much in debt for a very long time a lot of grapes and high-class studios. Ask Chung King studios about me. I locked out like a rock star in there. We were spending close $100,000 a month there.”
You might think Jim is now stuck paying this insane debt back, but… that’s not the case…
after the jump, Jim explains why he wasn’t worried about having to pay back the $8-mill he spent at Sony…
Jim carefully explained how he was exempt from paying back the money he spent at Sony.
“They did a big deal over there… it was called Roc Nation. So they gave me one piece of paper that said ‘I don’t owe them nothing, get to stepping.’
“I’m not going to assume or put words in anyone’s mouth but I just know that they did a big deal with Roc Nation that means someone’s coming in the building and they didn’t really care about the money I spent. They used it as a tax write off.”

Miss Info, I truly apprectiate your loyality to your friendship with Jim Jones but the bottom line is he is a horrible rapper and needs to stop making excuses. Promotion or not, he will be selling less then 20,000 units his first week. That is solely based on the fact that he is “hot garbage”. And how many times must Jay-Z name come out of his mouth??? JAY IS NOT THINKING ABOUT U JIMMY- you did your numbers with that “Balling” record and manuipulated the fact that JAy actually responded into more spins. I admit I bumped it too mainly because I am a native New Yorker but you will never have a hit again, let it go. I love u Info and your blog but it KILLS me to see u always ALWAYS showing love to DipSet annd Jimmy. I get it they are your friends but damnn…
anyways I do support Juelz though- wheres that album???
April 7th, 2011 at 1:57 pm
smh Jimmy is stupid running up the bill to $8 mil at Sony over champagne n other luxuries like he was moving units like that
April 7th, 2011 at 1:59 pm
Wow! In this case it paid to be a hot head, bully what have you…gotdamn, anyone else would’ve been starvin on the streets right now…they just told him to peace out…that’s insane!
2ndly I think he had MAAAD time to promo this album, put numerous videos, million plus followers on his twitter knew it was coming out…come on Jim…u did the expected numbers. I happened to think the album is good, no Uptown bias…I really do but bottom line, u didn’t have a hit record Jim. Everybody Jones might help once the vid drops,we’ll see.
April 7th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
why does it seem, everything that goes wrong for anyone with dipset the blame some how works out to be someway or shape jay-z Lol LOL
you guys need to get over
jones your hype who had one hit respect your hustling skills but rapper your not
April 7th, 2011 at 2:49 pm
Oh yeah Jimmy is very “stupid” for living like a don at the record companies expense…..
WTF define stupid because he sounds like a genius to me
BALLLINNNNNNNNNN!!!!
April 7th, 2011 at 3:17 pm
after watching these videos he makes if very apparent he isn’t the savvy hustler/businessman he makes himself out to be
April 7th, 2011 at 3:33 pm
No, it’s at HIS EXPENSE. You think they not gonna get that money back you delusional. Trust, record labels, ESPECIALLY SONY, will get their money back one way or another. He ain’t getting over at all.
There are plenty of artists who rack up huge tabs thinking it’s “on the label.” Until they move to their next deal and the past label finds a way to get some of that money. It’s happened before and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen again.
April 7th, 2011 at 3:42 pm
So basically Jigga erased Jim’s $8 millie balance? Sounds to me like Jimmy should be grateful to Hov. Lol.
April 7th, 2011 at 4:02 pm
all hes doing is wasting smoke and talking alot of shit
sony should sue his ass
April 7th, 2011 at 4:34 pm
If the only reason you bumped We Fly High (Ballin) is because you are a native New Yorker, than I I’m not sure you are the one who Info should take blogging advice from(not that she needs any).
You shoulda bumped it because it was a hot song. If you can’t even admit that, than its safe to say that your opinion on Jimmy’s music has absolutely nothing to do with music.
JIMMY IS NOT THINKING ABOUT U, Q!
April 7th, 2011 at 5:22 pm
I think it was an insightful interview. Sometimes its hard to understand what Jim Jones motives are behind his antics. as far as Sony just writing off the 8 mill cause Roc nation joined in joint venture well never truly know depends on what type of contract and closure captions he had. all i know is there are plenty of artist that would like to be in a position to spend 8 mill and have the label write it off. pandering or not Jim is winning like sheen for this. by the way I’m not a particular fan of Jim ,from an artistic perspective(just my opinion)I feel he needs to put more thought into his music instead of getting high then jumping on the mic after a moment of clarity hits him while he snoozes. either way big ups Jim i support all N.Y artists
April 7th, 2011 at 5:46 pm
Thanks for the pos. I wish Jim Jones would do better.
April 7th, 2011 at 5:54 pm
no Jimmy needs a ghostwriter as good as Max B to give him a wave to ride on
April 7th, 2011 at 6:19 pm
Ha! Genius??? how naive of Jimmy to think that he would recoup atleast 8 mil from Pray For Reign.
April 7th, 2011 at 6:25 pm
Ya crazy at the end of the day . jim jones does what he supposed to do hustle the game. Jay-z is one out of a million. no other artist can repeat what he did because of the time he came in. you cant deny dipset . jim stays on that radio or breaking artist
April 7th, 2011 at 6:35 pm
I don’t get why ppl hate Jim Jones so much. I felt like his first 3 albums were dope with “Take Me To Church” being a classic. Shit, once summer comes around I’m always quick to grab “Diary of Summer” cus that Summer Wit Miami is straight feel good music. So to me that ones a classic too. I know ppl gonna think I’m crazy but I’m not a fan that follows trends (i.e Wiz Khalifa).
I just don’t get why his last couple of albums were all features on literally every song. Some ppl may think its bc Max B left? IDK, could be. Since he left we have the DJ Webstar phase, the MOB phase (which I copped) and now the features phase.
April 7th, 2011 at 6:41 pm
Interesting interview. Jimmy came across less stupid than usual. The reason I can’t stand Jimmy is not because his music is total garbage. It is because he turned his back on Cam and took up with 50. Disloyal or stupid it doesnt matter. You will never see Tony Yayo move with another group that was beefin with 50. Bottom line he is a disloyal friend who doesn’t deserve the success he has been given by Cam.

#real talk
April 7th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
Jim Jones is one of the most underrated cats in the game. He’s still a growing artist and he’s progressing in all areas of the game. I used to be on that shit too like Soulja Boy is fucking trash but them niggaz is getting bread. U think they give a damn about what a hater thinks? Go to someones site u like and write something positive. I fux wit Jones and the set. I think that perfect day song is garbage but If your a true fan then that shouldn’t turn you away. Jordan ain’t make every shot or win every game either. Niggaz be dick riding nowadays. Love an artist when they got some hot shit out then hate them when they’re less then perfect! (Cam’ron voice) jim jones, santana, freekey, luca, brazi, whole taliban. Dipset bitch!
April 7th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
harlem aint been hot since Big L got shot … #r.i.p. Mc’s who spit amazing
April 7th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
i like jimmy enough but… classic? really?
April 7th, 2011 at 7:40 pm
I was reading the responses and I was thinking the same thing about his first 3 albums. Early on Jim sort of had a 2pac vibe 2 me! After the thing with Max everything went south and unfortunatly it seems like artist don’t rebound well from that sort of fall (example, 50 after his first album)
April 7th, 2011 at 8:47 pm
sounds like he’s making excuses for his next flop CAPO, he’s lucky he gets 5 to 10 gees a show to play small clubs and rap over his own songs. his balling days are over and i bet he missed out on the real estate grab in harlem . 5 yrs from now be pushing a toyota watch
April 7th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
word, Miss info puts a lot of Dipset related bullshit on here no one really cares for.
Jim isn’t even seen as a rapper to most loyalists, still seen as Cam’s hypeman… who was Biggie’s muscle… none of them rap to rap.
yet Miss info posted nothing positive about Max’s wave until he was sentenced, nothing positive about Tru Life.
how do you go from critiquing Nas’ Illmatic to posting Waka and some tired Dipset garbage?
April 7th, 2011 at 9:38 pm
Q is SUCKA!, Shut up SUCKA – 50 cent
April 7th, 2011 at 9:53 pm
[miss info] – you done bumped yo head this week baby girl…..With gems like “when you grow up you realize you’re gonna always be in debt” and “your recoup was kinda like a mortgage” you might need a short vacay. I know Jimz your man but using weak analogies to support his wasting money just makes you look loopy. Dude is hosting female fight nights talking bout blowin $8MM….lol……
April 7th, 2011 at 10:02 pm
Alot fans are extremely ignorant, uneducated, and lack common sense. Lets be real, Jim Jones is dookie, like reallt! He one of those rappers that portrays this lavish lifestyle when it is all superficial. One of my good friends went to the ATM in Harlem once and Jim Jones was on his cell phone yelling at the person on the other ebd of the call, requesting for money to be deposited in his account cause obviously nothing was in there. fans are extremely delusional and really believe that the majority of these artists arent OWNED by the labels they work for. Dudes be spending money like crazy but dont show the side in which they struggling to pay back what they owe to the label, owe to the IRS, and owe in general.
April 7th, 2011 at 10:59 pm
Zzzzzzz….you know an artist is lame when they stop talking about their art and start talking about some other bullshit. 8 mill on a record? Shit, I hope there are some lost tapes coming out because this latest shit I’ve heard out of old boy is garbage.
April 7th, 2011 at 11:10 pm
i might have been high by proximity. but my point was, at a certain point you have to embrace that you will live the rest of your life in debt bc you accumulate credit card debt (without constantly adding to the debt and then paying it off, you can’t even get a good credit rating), then car notes, house mortgages, college loans etc….so being in debt isn’t really that bad. As long as there’s balance.
April 7th, 2011 at 11:18 pm
Debt is a tool to accumulate wealth, ideally. This 8 mil (allegedly) sounds like it was spent stuntin….not so good.
April 7th, 2011 at 11:42 pm
why spend what you don’t have? that just don’t make any sense, i seriously doubt that sony let a non platinum artist a 8 million dollar budget
April 8th, 2011 at 12:01 am
LOL @ this guy Jim Jones bragging bout how he burned thru 8 Mill while at Sony, man that’s the last 8 millie he’ll prolly go thru in his life. And AS a matter of fact he lucked out when Sony told him to forget about the debt, otherwise they would’ve been claiming all of his itunes and publishing money until he was a senior citizen. How you gonna be proud of accumulating 8 mill worth of debt like it’s some grandiose accomplishment? That type of mentality is EXACTLY why Jimmy will ALWAYS be a “C List” rapper…(among many other reasons of course)
He should be grateful they even funded his shitty projects, cuz that money could’ve gone towards developing more exceptional and deserving ARTISTS.
April 8th, 2011 at 2:29 am
if u watch the video (or even read the captions) he got release papers from Sony… so….
Not to say its not a lil odd, but I’m sure Jimmy knows more about his deal than you, and if I were an exec at Sony, I’d SURE AS HELL drop his bum ass if it meant bringing on Jay-Z. THAT’s how they make their money back.
I wouldn’t put it past Jay to make dropping Jimmy a condition to signing, either.
April 8th, 2011 at 5:19 am
Jimmy is a bum!
April 8th, 2011 at 6:56 am
CO-SIGN ! my dude , u see his “wifey” got a reality show … come’on son !
April 8th, 2011 at 7:01 am
but i’m befuddled by this … 8 min for what ??? if an artist who actually has legitimate pure skills / talent , that 8 mill could have most def turned into 16-24 , easy. what is nas had 8 mill , or wu-tang ? but really , i would love to see what odd future wolf gang kill them all would do with 8 mill for an album …lol
April 8th, 2011 at 7:20 am
Jim is a character, NOT an artist
he sucks and always ready to bring up Jay’s name
April 8th, 2011 at 7:46 am
Jimmy can’t write a hit without Max .. point blank period.
April 8th, 2011 at 8:08 am
Gone head and believe he blew 8 million on making a album that everybody knows wont sale 200k, and gon head and believe that a corporation would be willing to lose 8 million in this economy and not want to get any of it back. Yeah aight…
April 8th, 2011 at 8:42 am
And Stack Bundles too,, don’t forget him!!
April 8th, 2011 at 9:31 am
I just think he has terrible music and ignorant logic..but, Info..nobody can never accuse you of being disloyal..ever.
April 8th, 2011 at 9:41 am
jim is a idiot for spending 100k a month on studio, he has always been a low album seller, even when ballin was a massive hit he still didnt go gold or break 100k first week SMH, after spending 8 million on a budget on a artist who has never gone gold or platinum Sony execs are a bunch of idiots. now his new album sold 15k first week even though he had heavy radio play, the bottom line is the public does not care about a jim jones album. you have a artist like saigon with little to no radio support doing those type of numbers
April 8th, 2011 at 10:36 am
Even now Jim apparently still has Jay shook.
MMMMM MMMMM ( In a Star & Buckwild Style )
April 8th, 2011 at 12:04 pm
Right! Come to think of it, I find it highly UNLIKELY that Jimmy would REALISTICALLY be permitted to run up an $8 million dollar tab in the hopes of recoup. Let’s be for real. Those are numbers I expect from the Michael Jacksons and Madonnas… #IMJ
April 8th, 2011 at 12:06 pm
Yea that’s my gripe with him too.
April 8th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
seriously your a clown
April 8th, 2011 at 1:40 pm
LOL…Hell yea FREE MAX B…fuck Jimmy…fake goon
April 8th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
Seriously, Your level of intellect is way way down.
Now go grab your shine box !!
April 8th, 2011 at 7:41 pm
Jim Jones’ “On My Way To Church” is and will be the only good album he ever put out. It didnt have big production names but he sounded so street, so good to the people who came from the struggle. Now its about bullshit and lambos and chains. Who the fuck cares Jimmy? If you reding this, get back to the basics. Yeah you have money, but talk about real shit. Talk about the streets, talk about love, talk about situations where it makes sense. I hate ALL of your new music. You don’t put anymore effort and its sad. Camron is still the best rapper out of Dip Set and Juelz needs to come out with an album. Max B was garbage too don’t even gas Max B up, that whole M.O.B was total disgrace to rap. JIM JONES if you read this or Miss Info please tell him the streets want the real Jim Jones back. I want to hear that hunger that was on “On My Way To Church” and more hard, catchy beats. That mixtape material with Sen City sucks really bad, I can’t listen to it it hurts my ears and makes no sense. Please Jim just stop getting so high you think all your material is good because its not. Just give us that 2001, 2002 Jim Jones. Thank you.
April 8th, 2011 at 8:50 pm
Wow, it is true a hater is a closet fan!!! If you don’t like Jimmy or the Dips then why waste 10 mins of your life watching 2 videos, & then time too type a “how much I hate Jimmy & the Dips” thread.
Lets be 1 Million if it wasn’t for Jimmy none of you guys/gals would know how Max B is!!!!
Max haven’t made a hit so please quiet down, children.
If any of you guys know that major labels will pull rank & destroy a great album bcuz they pay people too tell them whats hot. They aren’t rap/hiphop fans. If HipHop & Al left the label & they changed budgets/ marketing your “Fucked as an artist”.
Lets not also forget how much the whole Dips set fashion trends!!!
P.S. Info stay loyal. I salute you. You correct about that debt ish too.
Haters will hate.
April 8th, 2011 at 10:37 pm
Where his proof he spent 8 million? you dudes believe anything like damn. Where’s the common sense. You believe a record company would give Jimmy more money than they would give Cam. You dudes are gullible. y’all don’t go outside y’all hang with those damn computers all day. C’mon Son.
April 10th, 2011 at 6:17 pm
I don’t believe Sony let him run up an $8m tab. I just don’t….
April 11th, 2011 at 8:31 am
I like JIm but I was watching this video with my eyebrow raised way up. I hate people who brag about how much money they SPENT!
Dude what do you have to show for it? A bunch of Blank CDs, empty bottles and stripper receipts…
You’ll only hear Jay or 50 talk about how much they MADE coming up.
April 12th, 2011 at 11:38 am
I use the term “classic” loosely. To me classics are just albums from your past that you can always dig up and throw on. Not what the masses or experts would pick.
