Jermaine Dupri vs. LA Reid:

From Essence.com via The Life Files:
ESSENCE.COM: Was it an amicable parting?
DUPRI: I haven’t spoken to L.A. [Reid] in three months. I don’t know if it’s amicable [considering] that they claim they put me out. I feel like it’s not amicable. Don’t lie, be real about the situation. It goes back to their having the attitude of let’s try and do something that’s going to hurt this person, because if it hurts us we have nowhere to go after this, but he does and has at least another 20 more years in this business. Again, if L.A. [Reid] gets fired, there will be at least another ten people who will also get fired and we’ll never see them again. Def Jam is like one big clique.
ESSENCE.COM: Although it’s been three months since you’ve spoken to L.A. Reid, would you be open to reconciliation?
DUPRI: I don’t know. I saw a side of him that I had never seen before and that to me was a jealous side. I don’t know if I should be around people who are jealous of me. Mariah Carey sold more records in that entire Def Jam building and all of that was through my singles; so I’m looking like the golden boy. I only started thinking about it after I left.

hmm, i havent asked. but i would think that as top heavy as that company is, they could use less execs with enormous paychecks and more mid-level employees who are the ones that do all the work

hmm, that could be interesting. but there seems to be a lot of combo groups. I think one part of that combo is gonna pull more weight than the other?

Give JD his props! He do be holding it down sans the Janet albums. He been in the game for years and is more consistent than Diddy. Just like he said, the music game is one big clique and if u ruffle the wrong feather yur done. It’s one big, evil monster if u ask me!!
Make other moves JD, the music game in whole is one big sinking ship!!

the music business has lost the business side of the the business.
someone said usher was an instant sell , well no! Jermaine came to La Reid recuse for usher when his last CD produced by puffy didn’t sell. JD produced Usher and sold big time. check your history before you make statements about the music business. Gossip is one thing facts are words you can’t change.

good point mustafa. the blame should be put on the heads who sign these artists and the artists themselves. IMO most, with the exception of a few, have very little talent. does anyone else miss the “survival of the illest” days of def jam or is it just me?

It’s like what happen at atabu ghraib, you gotta look at the top man.
I mean El Presidente lol Jay-z or Jigga.
All I’m saying is Def jam was struggling before he got there, but he was suppose to be the savior. I think signed Tierra Mari,Fabolis, Neyo, and Rhianna. Well 3 out of 4 ain’t bad. What did he really do? It just looked like he was their wearing the title. Kinda coasting along meanwhile the ship is just sinking. I don’t know (?)
I do know this. I don’t recognize the place, is it Def jam or Arista. Place might as well be Motown. I guess it’s the end of an era. It’s about Indie companies now.

JD makes no sense. If felt all disrespected and ex-communicated by Def Jam then why didn’t he just re-sign (i.e. Hov) and save face instead of looking stupid by getting fired/let go????

I think JD should go quietly into the sunset. Don’t blame everybody else, look at u. U gave us Mimi but what did u do for JJ? Oh well, there’s still Bow Wow

Well, Well
I love this argument about Def Jam, truly, they always had too many execs up there, and someone needs to get fired, they are literally living off of R&B right now, Rihanna, Neyo, Mariah, Janet, these are the artist that are selling on Def Jam, thee, Hip Hip label, yes Rick Ross, Jeezy, Ludacris, with Hov and Fab was okay, but truth be told, they are mostly in the same mold, it became Arista over there, but LA got fired from there as well, but Def Jam has always been only as good as the guys who are pushing there artist. Kanye, LA was perfect for Kanye, he knew exactly what to do with him, lt him do him, stay out his way
Dame Dash with Jay Z, the Roc never had it, jay did, Bleek, Beans never really took off, Beans gave us the SP, but besides Young Crhris, who are you looking for Free, Petey, O&Sparks never lived up, Kanye was a great find. Cam and the Dips came and everything fell apart, because Jay never really wanted another good artist on the label who could sale records, he had a problem with them Harlem boys from the start, and the streets was loving it, the perception is that the Roc was gold or Plat but the truth is they signed had in their roster and affiliates, Kanye, MOP, Joe Budden, Twista, Young Gunz, Beans, Free, O & Sparks, Petey Crack, Uncle Murda, Tru Life, Memphis Bleek, Jay Z, T. Marie, Foxy Brown, Ole Dirty Bastard, S.A.S, and a bunch of dropped dudes, PLAIN IN SIMPLE NO DAME, NO GAME
DMX & RUFF RYDERS that was them Dean Boys and Girl, they pushed that
Ja Rule, that was Irv
Ludacris, he and Chaka handles all that
Rick Ross and Jeezy have their own movements with Slip Slide/DJ Khaled and CTE/Big Meech respectively
Fab was already doing what he do
Meth has Wu when he came
Red had Eric Sermon
Eric Sermon was already known
they got Mariah on the comeback with a big assist from JD
the only thing they have been able to do at Def Jam is Rihanna, she is keeping that building up right now, they put her album out like three times, she could of finshed he contract over there with all these added songs, it is nuts, but they never really knew what they were doing, that beig said, I would sign there in a minute

Well…LA had a genius artist when the artist was a mere impressionable teen. He played with that artist and used him to get what he wanted then discarded him. Now that artist is a writer, singer and producer!!! LA has a hidden side, I have seen it… it’s all about LA and the $$$. He will reap…
