Jay-Z performs “Death of Autotune” at Hot97 Summerjam

lol, I was busy doing backstage video (they will be editing over the next few days) while Jeezy was tearing it down at Summerjam tonite. But I ran into the broadcast booth just in time to catch Jay-Z’s big big moment. I told the boss that this was probably the biggest Summerjam moment in the past 5 years. And with all the backstory going on behind the scenes…my convos with Ron Browz, Webstar and Jim Jones are coming soon….there was certainly alot of intrigue at the final Summerjam at the old Giants Stadium….more to come.

Jay-Z is from my “golden era” of hip-hop (mid 90s) that is STILL relevant, STILL the best and STILL the most important figure in hip-hop. He is still nicer than any rapper in New York (yeah you too Nas). Still makes better full albums than anyone in New York (yeah you too Jim Jones) and one thing is for certain while he may have relied on clever marketing for parts of his career (black album,kingdom come, amercian gangster)
He never makes anything corny. He has shown an incredible level of integrity by making heartfelt music his whole career (apart from maybe “Sunshine”)
To be honest I don’t understand why people are mad at him being 40, Thats what hip-hop needs. We need our big stars to still be a U2 or Mick Jagger. We need them to stay relevant and keep their superstar legacy in place and at the moment Hov is the only artist in hip-hop who fits into that category.

I agree with Dennis on the strength of when Jayz was making repetative singles like Big Pimpin, Hey Papi, and those other songs like that people called him out. Called him bubble gum and pop and commercial, accused him of being a sellout and all that stuff. He always defended himself when people called him out about his questionable singles and obvious lack of originality. How dare he call other people out for NOT being original and repetative when him and his wife are notorious for being a couple of repetaive swagg jackas? Keepinitfunky! T-Pain stated in the run up to this even that he has 32 Cars, His youngest daughter has 4million in her own account and he just spent 410,000 dollars on a chain that reads “Big Ass Chain” so I think regardless of what Jay-Z says, T-Pain will be ok
I don’t know if you were paying attention to the aftermath of the song debuting but Jay has already addressed the T-Pain (and Kanye & Wayne) situation by saying DOA is not for them its for the hundreds of others who are exhausting that genre.
Seriously, look at New York right now (not saying there isn’t real talent in NY that goes under the radar) but look at the rappers in the spotlight. DJ Webstar (who?) Ron Browz (”ether” & “ebonics” to “pop champagne”?) and the 4 million other autotune imitators are saturating the hot 97 playlist.
If you look back to 2000 things were getting a little sweet in hip-hop and Jay changed it by dropping that run of three hard albums. I can’t understand why people can say “stop rapping” tell me who in NY (or hip-hop period) can make a better album than him right now? Jim Jones? Jadakiss? Busta Rhymes? Joe Budden? (lol) Ron Browz?

yo info info some of the people out here in hampton roads VA dont like and some do but what i find interesting is some of the ones who do like it say that jay should let the wack rappers be and make their money the best way that they can! If this song aint hot then i give up and their no hope for hip-hop guess im gonna have to listen to straight dance hall.

For those hamburgers at the top saying Jay aint original, I don’t get how people can beef with a person trying to get the money to provide for him & the people he love.Its a simple concept, sure Jay could spit some wordplay shit all day, but if you don’t come up with hits for the radio you just gon be a mixtape rapper. I might be wrong but I believe woman buy the most albums & you got to put something out there everyone can rock to if you want the big checks. People are misunderstanding the point of the song its not like he saying he’s better and everyones wack he’s saying ya’ll got skills so show it stop with the effect and as long as he surpasses people who ya’ll think are hot on the sales charts he will still make music. His music is in Waynes lyrics, Jimmy’s verses, Jeezy, Kanye, and everyone else who performed at summer jam. He’s not hating rap is dying when our top rappers are making pop songs and rock albums who will we have left. He’s saying leave autotune to T-Pain and rap cuz wayne kanye and webstarr all have talent but its being overshadowed by the autotune. Real rap fans listen to the music not the words.

When Jay Z was on Defjam, Throughout ROC- ERA how many artists got their chance from Amil, Oschino, Freeway Beans, Peedi, Diplomats, Rhianna, Kanye West amongst others.
Jay-Z built a career for Rhianna, he’s features on records with Rick Ross and Young Jeezy help rebuild hip-hop so y’all need to stop talkin outta ya ass.
When artists talk about being a boss, being a general and all that other nonsense and can’t take control of their own destiny then f them. And thats not just Jay-Z’s approach thats just business. Jay brought Nas to Defjam and Jadakiss to the ROC so stop wih Jay ain’t doing enough for NY.
It’s not a NY topic its the DEATH OF AUTOTUNE TOPIC, Thats what this is about f the autotune.
Jay Z is number one with the baddest chick in the game who’s he gotta hate?? Seriously every rapper wishes they had Jay Z’s catalogue of hits, record label situation and business empire. He makes a lot of wannabe best rapper/hustlers alive look like BUMS!

Don’t get me wrong Id be a ryder if I say I hated auto tune songs. But Jay z brings up a different point. He wants RAPPERS to stop dick ryding an r&b nigga, stop goin the easy way out. autotune is not being creative for a rapper its being catchy. The problem with the game now is the line between r&b/rap/pop are too thin. I remember the times when u couldnt get signed if u didnt sound like WU TANG CLAN. Yes…stop thinking there is no place for real rap/hiphop to sell cause we did it once we can do it again.Ya up here getting mad at Jay z, ya should be thanking him for actually giving these young spitters a chance. This is excacly wat we need; some of the real spitters who have nothing to prove and no more money to make to swing the momentum back to niggaz making classic music. when was the last time u heard an album with skits in it?….thats when rappers cared about wat they gave out to people. Stop settling and giving in to the r&b/pop market, trust im no hater i love that shit but there is plenty of money to go around. Its almost like we need the seniors to say its cool again to be urself and make real music, so everyone can follow and put hip hop in its own genre again.

WE all know that Jigga would’ve outrhymed any artist that he asked to appear on his album.. Which in turn, gave THEM a bit more shine..
Now I do admit that with being a Jay-Z fan.. HE has gotten a bit too comfortable sitting @ #1.. His lyrics aren’t as hard as Reasonable Doubt.. HOWEVER like KRS-One, Rakim and OTHER legends… He’s now rhyming for the love of the game..
Most of the hiphop fans that are under 25 have NO clue what true hip hop is.. You are online listening to and following up the autotune generation and following with Stanky Leg, Laffy Taffy, Chicken Noodle Soup but DIS artists like Teyana Taylor who has the style and TALENT of someone BEFORE her time..
