Jay-Z sat down with a triumvirate of media powerhouses, my homie Angie Martinez, sports pundit Stephen A Smith, and the legendary media-assassin Harry Allen for BET’s Food for Thought: Jay-Z. I think its fascinating that Hov specifically requested these 3 journalists for the show. Great call. I actually wish I could see the unedited footage of Harry and Hov’s chat because…well, because I know how Harry gets down.

Angie and Jay talk about his past, about the Timbaland leaks, and if Kanye and Eminem outrapped him on his own records. Stephen and Hov talk about that infamous $5million dollar buyout (with a fascinating story about losing a copy of the album the day before the deal). Harry and Jay talk about the avoidance of the marriage issue.

After the jump…Jay-Z talks to Funk Flex about 50 Cent’s line on “Flight 187″…

Dre from Nahright transcribed some parts, including this quote:
(26:55)
Flex: So 50 on a new freestyle.. On the new album though, you kinda… [Jay interrupts: That was a compliment.] What made you bring up the Summer Jam stage?
Jay-Z: I was really going through the history of it. It’s part of the history… I was actually giving him props. Every single person in that song, I was giving them their time… [Flex: He has a freestyle.] Nah, I think that was already done. No way in the world he could have.. He had that in the tuck. [Flex: You guys aren't moving together with this are you?] Nawwww. You know, he’s a loose cannon. Any given day you could wake up and he’ll start shooting.

Jay-Z in Oprah’s O Magazine:

Lowkey transferred this excerpt from the Oprah x Jay-Z chat in O Magazine (and Jay-Z will appear on Oprah’s show on Sept 24th)….their time together was well documented both on video and by Oprah and Gayle King. But this discussion about Jay’s reunion with his errant father was interesting.

Oprah: So how did you get back with your father?
Jay-Z: My mom set up a meeting. And now I realize why- it makes all the sense in the world. I remember very distinctly that I had a conversation with her in my kitchen. I was saying “You know, Ma, I’ve never really been trying to look inward, and maybe I’m just not meant to fall in love like other people do.” She just looked at me like, “Hush up, boy”.

Oprah: In one of your songs you wrote, you weren’t sure if he even remembered your birthday is in December.
Jay-Z: I believe that. When I was a kid, I once waited for him on a bench. He never showed up. Even as an adult, that affected me. So when my mom set up this meeting, I told her he wouldn’t come- and the first time, he didn’t. At that point, I was really done, but Mom pushed for another meeting because she’s just a beautiful soul.

Oprah: The second time, your father showed up?
Jay-Z: He showed up. And I gave him the real conversation. I told him how I felt the day he left. He was saying stuff like “Man you knew where I was.” I ‘m like, I was a kid! Do you realize how wrong you were? It was your responsibility to see me.” He finally accepted that.

Oprah: Where had he been?
Jay-Z: At his mom’s house ten minutes away from me. That was the sad part.
