Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis” Video…and Miss Info’s ‘Watch The Throne’ Wrap-up
Posted by Miss Info under about miss info , for fashion-hounds and obsessive consumers , good for hip hop , new music , videos[136] Comments
Jay-Z and Kanye West debuted their “Otis” video on MTV, directed by one of my favorites, Spike Jonze. (Thanks Tuma!) Here’s the vevo version for our intl’ readers. What do we think of the video? (PS: That chopped and screwed Maybach is being auctioned for East Africa charity…What will the CarFax read? ; ) (PPS: Does Aziz have one Chris Rock hand?)
We are living in a post-Watch The Throne world. Just 5 days ago…B.WTT! Before Watch The Throne. Now, A.WTT! Anno Watch the Throne. Do you remember what it was like to live in darkness? Carve your new awareness on a tablet. Preferably one with a touchscreen.
Ok, I’m being dramatic, but yes, Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s Watch the Throne album was definitely the biggest most galvanizing (and polarizing) hip hop album in a long time. Which is a great thing for music and music fans. I’ve been digesting it and am still trying to get a more realistic grasp on what I like and don’t like. Problem being…it’s taken me more than a week to just snap out of the fairy dust from that incredible Watch the Throne listening session. Kind of hard to be objective when you’re in a friggin’ planetarium packed with talented people you respect, under a full-dome movie screen hypnotizing you with basically Carl Sagan’s Cosmos x Michael Bay’s Transformers. Then to moving along with The Throne and their caboose to Philippe Chow for crab legs and The Darby for banquette trampolining until 4am.
So, yeah…still in awe of that night. Whoever raised their hand and suggested the Planetarium in a marketing meeting deserves a bonus or some sort….But I’ve distanced myself from the celebration and listened to Watch the Throne enough this week to have a few thoughts…
Continued….
There are moments during WTT that suffer from overkill (or more specifically overproduction) but I really enjoy when the duo get introspective, both musically and lyrically. I twitch when I hear “Gotta Have It,” bop when I hear “N—as in Paris,” sway to “Murder to Excellence.” But I stop moving for “Made In America,” “New Day,” and “Why I Love You.” And just listen very carefully. I imagine how that Gladys Knight hook must weigh like a ton on the chest of whoever Jay is addressing. They know who they are. Also I’ve mentioned before that, even though the two-seater Throne is the focus, Watch the Throne also feels like the cotillion ball for Frank Ocean’s rising star. He’s gonna be a monster.
Watching the WTT watch: There’s been a steady stream of reverential lyric quoting on twitter. And some really self-absorbed folks who think we all want their steady stream of hot air. There’s been some hilarious backlash. And some folks who are just trying to be contrary. But I’ve been fascinated by some of the very heady criticism, most of which centering on the fact that Jay and Ye are just too damn rich! LOL. I get it, but it’s ironic. Mostly because I wonder if rap fans with the most intimate knowledge of financial hardship are having the same complaint?
Personally, at this point, the “luxury rap” lingo doesn’t impress or offend me. At least Jay and Ye know what they’re talking about. (as opposed to the guys who think Louboutin is actually Lou Vuitton. *hoots*) As a teen Vogue fiend, I don’t need a glossary to recognize all the labels and I also know most of them don’t even make clothes that you really want to wear. Unless you’re this guy, or it’s Halloween. But I still get a thrill from hearing word play like “Bueller had a Muller, but I switched it for a Mille.” (I’m a bit confused why some folks thought Hov said Miele. I mean, they make a mean washing machine but huh? LOL)

And I’m sure there’s more….let me know what your favorite WTT posts were!
Meanwhile, RollingStone reported on Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci’s WTT fold-out cover design:
“I am honored to have been asked to be part of this incredible music moment with such amazing artists,” Tisci says in a statement. “I am impressed by the amount of respect they have for music and art. We share the same way of working: like a family.”
…a representative for the house of Givenchy provided further insight into the process that went into Tisci’s imagining and creation of the product. Bold colors and angular lines were incorporated symbolically to convey the “masculinity of two of the most iconic rap figures of our time.“
Oh gawd. These fashion people are so extra. I liked the gold panel, and the flag. But I actually thought someone had vandalized the portraits…didn’t love those big cat morphs. (And no, that’s not because I just don’t know enough about fashion or art to get it. LOL)
What’s interesting is that I had heard months ago of a plan to release very limited collector’s editions of Watch the Throne….like Tisci art objects, with thousand dollar price points. What if there had been a wearable version….

cuz this is not a type of single that a label wud normally let artists put out if this was years back, even a joint album like this would be crazy. This is a perfect example of artists expressing what they want heard.
I even didnt think this would happen, thought it would become a Detox myth.

I used to think they never made mistakes in things like that but after reading a few NYC papers I find them regularly…

This is Minimalist, Grand, Opulent AND avant-garde. To put it in perspective: It’s been years, since I have been excited about a Rap Video.
I have never seen Jay-z so cheerful. They destroyed a Maybach for God Sakes!!!!!!
This video embodies the Album. And it is a big Fuck you to the other guys.

This is great.
I read the Grantland review last night after a friend posted on Fbook that it was the best rap album he’s ever read and while I respected the thoughtfulness, I also thought to myself, “Oh Christ, please don’t let all the reviews aspire to this level of analysis.”
I think all the people talking about how it’s ‘too rich,’ for lack of a better phrase, are having wildly selective memories. The simple fact is that the disenfranchised AND the ever-aspiring middle class have always enjoyed Jay-Z, whether it was Iceberg and Cristal in ’97 or Louboutin slippers and Mille time pieces in 2011.
Love that you more or less reviewed the album Miss Info!

thank you so much for reading this. And I totally agree with you. Its just that times have changed so much that the people who are in the position to “floss” are no longer doing it in the places where the difference is the greatest, the thrill is most risky. They’re not riding in benzes 6 deep down 8th street by the shoe stores (which are now french bakeries btw, lol). They’re on boats in seclusion near Corsica. Does that take some of the soul out of it? maybe.
Anyways, I digress….but thanks again for the comment!

interesting point. and lol @ the shoe stores becoming french bakeries.
i guess for me it all seems so natural. if we’re going to accept a 42-year old rapper.. if we’re going to accept a guy like kanye west in general.. he started in pink RL polos with the collar up.. this was his STARTING point aesthetically…
then this just seems like natural progression to me, a natural endpoint, unique to the particular circumstances and aesthetics of these two performers.
maybe it’s not an endpoint. maybe we’ll actually get kanye at 45 emoting about mid-life malaise (has this already happened?), or Jay-Z rapping about how he’s discovered money really doesn’t buy happiness in his 50′s.

Money does buys happiness, contrary to popular believe. Perceptual happiness no. Nothing does. But happiness is about moments AND money can buy you happy moments. I never met a perfectly happy poor person. Nor a perfectly happy rich person. Some of my happiest moments in life are such, only because I was ever to afford it.

ehh.. i didn’t really mean to imply that it doesn’t.
i was more so just thinking about how people around the age of 50 often start to reevaluate some philosophical aspects of their life and how that may come about in Jay-Z’s future rhymes.
i don’t believe that money buys happiness. But I agree with you that there’s a strong link between the presence of some amount of money and happiness in one’s life.

In my opinion money just allows you to live. It allows you to do things you always wanted to do in a different space. It doesn’t make you happpy just helps you live out your life to its fullest potential. There are plenty wealthy un-happy people trust that
August 11th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
Hip hop is all about the moment now and not about trying to do something historic. The marketing push behind this album is nuts but the album isn’t. I judge music on timelessness and this project can’t hold a candle to Reasonable Doubt, College Dropout, The Black Album etc…. And y’all know it!
Y’all won’t be talking about this album 2 years from now so cut it out!!!
Video for Otis aint dope! Album is mediocre (so is beyonce’s by the way)
I live by these rules: if you make it and put it out in the world I have every right to talk about it the way I want.
If your reading this and your over 25 you understand when I say “luxury rap” didn’t have to be announced rappers just did it (shit corny).

Maybe this is the album Jay-Z was trying to make when he made Kingdom Come, now that you brought up Kingdom Come. It aspired to be “luxury rap”, but I didn’t have a heart like this album does. This makes sense to me now, I always found K/C a experimental album. Crappy but experimental.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing about Kingdom Come…it aspired to be what WTT almost was for Jay-Z. But to me WTT really feels like MBDTF-lite with Jay-Z on every track. I’ll bet that Jay’s next album is the happy medium between Kingdom Come and WTT, if he can find it.
But this “Otis” video is like those videos in the early-mid 2000s that just made the song sound better for some reason lol (if you didn’t like the song that much to begin with). Just buggin’ out…

Rappers don’t have any great (and especially honest) artistic goals anymore.
and the music is suffering for it.
All the great artists had great goals. Whether it was simply to be miles ahead of competition, to tell about their life and struggles (whether in a fun, party way or in a real way).
Basically, they wanted to tell us their story. Every single great rapper that’s EVER come out has been a great storyteller. Either they made full-on storytelling tracks or they weaved little bits of daily life/funny/sad/deep stories into their punchlines.
But no one’s interested in storytelling anymore.
Our goals are to show swag and more swag. Which is as basic and mundane as it gets artistically. That’s why you’re gonna keep getting these albums that go nowhere and aren’t memorable.
Tons of hype and then irrelevant a year later.
WTT is heading for the dustbin real soon.

I respect the creativity but I refuse to give any current rapper a penny of mine if they talk about what they got and what others don’t. Plain and simple, people are starving stop talking about diamonds, chains, planes, yachts, and other material BS. For real, reason Em sold so much cause he spoke about real struggle and real life. The whole flaunting in the rhymes is getting old real quick and the sad part is its coming from a lot of the artists I used to love in the early 90′s. Give some soul when you put your soul into the music.

Anyone who is relevant pretty much (or should I say corporate backed now that they blew up)… It’s the level of flossin’ that sickens me. I get coming from nothing and wanting to show what you now have but its their actions also (putting money in the trunks of a ferrari like 50, buying insane cars like birdman, etc etc… Every new artist today comes right out the gate talking about money. Why don’t you actually tell me a story, which is what raps supossed to be about. That’s why I say usually an artists best album is their 1st, because they are hungry.
We need more Brand Nubians, Talibs, Public Enemy’s, Arrested Development’s, Dead Prez’s, etc.
I understand rappers evolve and they aren’t who they used to be, but name one person from the hood or the now dead middle class who can relate to a maybach or anything these dudes are flossing. The people make the artist wealthy (most of the time), talk about some real life sh*t.

So why not just listen to ” Brand Nubians, Talibs, Public Enemy’s, Arrested Development’s, Dead Prez’s, etc.”? These dudes should rap about what they wanna rap about. Personally it’s motivational to me when I hear somebody like Jay talk about goals then achieve them. As for the other guys, 50 had a good story and told it on GRODT but I don’t think he ever progressed as an MC, birdbrain wasn’t a MC to begin with he’s just a coon. You shouldn’t put Jay n Ye in the same categorie as those dude because they still put time n effort into their craft.

I understand your point. But, I tend to hear Jay’s lyrics as glass half full not half empty. Jay’s mere existence gives me hope. Get up, get out and get something. Life is short. Otherwise, bitterness and struggle prevails in our real lives? Nah, we can’t have none of that, and that’s Jay’s attitude. The Federal Reserve won’t stop manufacturing green paper, it’s there for the taking. Not all songwriters are built like Eminem, where music is their therapy. Em invites us to sit in on his “therapy sessions”. Jay and ‘Ye invites us to an elite lifestyle and to celebrate success to the max.

double edge sword I guess cause when the rapper is rich and talks about not having he gets the 50 cent ripple effect. Once you out the struggle whats the point of talking about that when you’re not going through that anymore. Artist are regular people too they evolve just like anyone else would that is successful

I agree 100%… Problem in 50′s case is he blew up really quick and gave out so much material in such a short time frame with mixtapes and everything that he pretty much oversaturated himself.
I was listening to GRODT the other day. The thing now is he really has nothing to rap about besides money and people don’t want to hear that. At the same time he isn’t on the corner no more so no one wants to hear that either. If he grew with his music he would rap about real life stuff like his kid, his mom, family, etc. Maybe even write a song about how his relationships have changed with his baby moms (in detail). I guarantee that would actually sell more then him talking about his hublot and robbing someone being an Outlaw.

well put, you nailed it. his creative stand still is I think because he thinks he needs to get a hit to get the label invest in his project. He needs to apply the same process he did before the deal. He keeps going back to southside to create GRODT when he can make another classic where he stands today. He stop focusing on his entire body of work within an album. It irks me to see a rick ross or even The game evolve and see 50 cent creatively stuck. Case in point I enjoyed this album even with the O.D rich talk and overtones of flash, i think they still kept it conceptual, which is what i feel 50 can do.

He didn’t over analyzed it. He just got it. He found the meaning. This is not over analyzing. It usually takes me year to dissect some albums. I still find ‘Capital Punishment’ daunting. And the Black album is filled with subtleties about the Jay-z’s beef with Dame and the other guys.

Jay-z and kanye are not broke so those rapping about being broke and drugs would be just dumb
Of course it’s luxury rap there both rich
Didn’t you the Forbes list come on
There few rappers keep it real
Keep in it real is not talk about drugs
If you want here about some poor rapper go listen some up and coming rapper who still sell mix tape out his car
It talk about your real life
And there real life is luxury
Sorry I will buy this more than i will buy 50 cent or lil wayne talk about sell drug and shooting anyone

1. i really like the video , it’s simple but luxurays at the same time ….
2. loved the models in the back making funny faces.
3. will that glove jigga had become a new trend ( like ghost riding the whip )
4. the album is most def album of the year so far … i got the delux and i am gonna count all 16 songs… 8 are just eh…ok , not wack just good … now that said the other 8 are straith up 80′s crack , the kind that made ya mom sell ya pampers on the corner for a buck. that why the other 8 are ok , cuz the fire 8 are just so amazingly wow…
5. i dont want to see another “duo” album unless it’s Nas and Preemo … cuz wtt is to tuff …

Clap it up for Miss Info (My journalism idol btw) for her time capsule blog.
Whether we all like it or not, WTT got us all watching, and talking, and commenting, and comparing/contrasting. This is part of the culture. Don’t you see the e/affects Jay and Ye have on us. It takes us all back to the time when Hip Hop was in it’s prime, when you would rush to your spot in the cafeteria during your friend’s lunch period just to be able to tear apart Blueprint. They’re trying to restore Hip Hop. Shit they succeeded.
I also agree w/whoever said the album sounds like MBDTF w/Jay features, I said that same exact thing yesterday. It’s definetly not either ones greatest work, even as a collabo I expected way more. But like someone else said, maybe this is just the prequel. If so I am anxious all over again damnit.

Missinfo dropping some knowledge on us. WTT, IMO, is mediocre. There are a few bangers on it, though, but as a whole – eh. The hypebeasting and grandiose figures Ye and Jay have become is what made WTT what it is. It became more of a spectacle than an album. I’m sure people gave their opinions on WTT without even listening to it, because nowadays everyone is so eager to give their pov. Opinions are like (expletive,) everyone has one.

lets be honest the prodution was top knotch and aside from the first 3min of one song missing this was one of the best sounding albums but truthfully this was not worth the hype they should have waited sooner or made some songs longer not to mention these two are a bad collaboration…jay and nas….kanye and drake…would have been way beter then these too. lyrically this album did not live up to expectation.

Info they actually have parties at the planetarium often. Back in 2008 I saw the Cool Kids, Kid sister & A-Track there and Kanye was a surprise performance so it might have been his idea.

Dang Miss Info, you didn’t like “New Day”? Here I am hyping that track up on FB. Not a Wu Tang fan (sue me) but I dig that RZA beat. ..when you say you twitch @ “Gotta Have It”, is that a good or bad thing? Another track I love. I’m simmering down a little on the Frank Ocean hype, but I will admit his style is refreshing. All in all, I love WTT. I think they abandoned the lead-in beat on “Who Gon Stop Me” wayyyy too soon. It started off like a UGK beat then went into some weird shit like halfway in. That was a mistake imo. Fav track is “Illest MF Alive” even though the Mrs. got mad when my fb status was “I need a slow motion video right now”. She thought I was quoting Juvenile (haha!). I dig “Otis” more after the video, and even had my 1 year old daughter singing “na-na-na” this morning. Oh, and tell Aziz “F you Harris, I DO EXIST!”

‘New Day’ and ‘That’s my Bitch’ are the WORST!
‘That’s my Bitch’ just sucks generally. Jay-Z actually rhymes Larry Gagosian with museum. FAIL.
‘New Day’ bothers me b/c it’s ostensibly supposed to be this dedication to unborn sons thing. But Kanye just uses it as an excuse to moan about his problems over a sickly RZA beat. what a waste. These things have nothing to do with your son, dog. Just makes you think Kanye is going to be one of those people who projects his own issues all over his poor kid. And Jay-Z just sounds bored, like this song was completely Ye’s idea.
Luckily, the album really heats up again after those two clunkers.

The cd has some greatness and some just ok moments. I have come to expect this from every cd I purchase regardless of the genre of music.
My complaint is why the hell do they continue to engineer these songs for headphones! The music sounds horrible being played through my car system.

it’s gentrification rap. it’s safe–i wear urkle glasses now, even though they’re not prescription, so as to appear nonthreatening–rap. it’s a sham, dude. think about it like this. are old delta blues musicians mainstream? like, can people sell crap with robert johnson? hell no. in rap, can people sell stuff with gimme the loot,or suicidal thoughts, or memory lane? delta blues were relatable to the average black person in america in the early 20th century, as was old school rap in the latter part.
my mother tells me all the time about how my grandfather’s (a west virginia coalminer and later an auto worker) favorite song was “stormy monday” by t bone walker. the music spoke to his situation and social standing.
there’s no more humanity in rap music anymore, good or bad. the music has been reduced to a sequence of poorly composed bloops and bleeps, and the lyrics are just advertisements for high-end knick knacks. jay and kay aren’t sell-outs, they’re just salesmen.

more nouveau riche vomit. overrated, grandiose, banal, sociopathic rap from one obvious sociopath(shawn carter), and his narcissistic acolyte (mr. west). jay-z will use whatever, or whomever he needs to in order to make money. first it was the drug game, then it was dame, then it was kanye; he even tried to strike-up a fake friendship with lebron to lure him to the nets, but lebron isn’t as stupid as kanye. when kanye isn’t hot anymore, jay will just use someone else. hell, he’s probably grooming big sean right now. he’s the emperor palpatine of rap.

The WTT album is pretty good. I think with the two names attached to it people want an album as great as Thriller. All I wanted was music from two of my favorite artist and I got it. I didn’t listen or feed into the hype I just waited and was really impressed with the results.
So many rappers claim they’re gonna do joint album with each other and they never do but guess what Kanye & Jay did it and now there’s going to be a flood of joint albums now. TTT (Thank The Throne).

DOPE video.
I listened to WTT before reading any reviews, so I could make up my own mind first. After listening to the album over 5 times and hearing what other folks have said about it, I still can’t find a reason to dislike this album. Its fresh, different, has depth, and is way above anything else right now. One flaw, is it is definitely way out of touch with reality and what is going on in the world right now.

OK went back and listened to the CD again! While i definately noticed the high end product shout outs, nothing stood out to me more than the message of race. I think jay and ye have been exposed to racism. Its almost as if they thought the money and fame would shield them…they are seriously pissed off on this CD!

I have just read every comment maybe I have too much time on my hands. It amazing how much discourse which has spawned from this one album, which I think is a very important part by itself. Main Stream in my opinion does not have a since of humanity anymore but i digress. This album is good and gets a solid B- from me its covers so much, from production, to lyrics to delivery that it no way can get a A on my scale. I think to the average listener tho, it will do well tho. A dandelion in a field of dry grass looks good, but in a garden it is weed, that is a harsh comparison but there really is know body to compare them today. I love the ambiguity that @missinfo always critiques things, you never really know what she’s thinking, probably bad for business but I appreciate all the comments that this post received
