J. Cole Debuts His First Single “Work Out”, Off His Upcoming Debut Album
Posted by Mr.North under New Music[46] Comments
As J. Cole previously promised on Ustream, once he got the sample cleared soon after fans would get his new single. That happened today, so here’s the first look, “Work Out” which samples Kanye West’s “The New Workout Plan” with an interpolation of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” on the two-year anniversary of his standout The Warm Up mixtape. Also see some people are confused about “Who Dat”, last year it was the single but as what happens a lot of times things change and a different direction is chosen, that’s hip hop.
New Music: J. Cole – “Work Out”

Love this. I’ve been patiently awaiting J. Cole’s release date. I’m a fan. The Paula Abdul sample is insane.
June 15th, 2011 at 10:14 pm
In this climate J Cole gotta have ‘gold gloves’ focus… I’m rooting for him.
June 15th, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Perfect song for a single .. ColeWorld
June 15th, 2011 at 10:31 pm
This is solid I like it kinda gives me a 96 feel with the Roger Troutman Autotune lick on it.
The Hook sounds like 50 best friend lol ima cop it though
June 15th, 2011 at 10:34 pm
i was really rooting for this kid. he lost me with this bs. i mean really? he shudve just used tracks from the first two mixtapes. i wudve bought that before i bought this bs. no no no!
June 15th, 2011 at 10:40 pm
this guy is clearly going to have a tough time in this game with the drake comparisons haunting him. This song is mediocre in comparison to what we have heard on his mixtapes and leaks alike-frankly, im disappointed!!
June 15th, 2011 at 10:44 pm
Not as big a sound as Who Dat but still a banger!!!
Classic stuff… Man please give this dude a release date already!
June 15th, 2011 at 10:44 pm
Not feeling it, the hook is ok but the sample just kills it for me.
June 15th, 2011 at 11:09 pm
I’m hardly tuned in to J Cole ,As his release dates tribulations have put me to sleep. Guess i expected more from a roc-nation projects lol but I like it !!
June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 am
first thing that came to my mind was it sounds like one of those 50 songs that he wrote back in the day… like dude above me said kinda sounds like “best friend”
June 16th, 2011 at 12:51 am
im just tired of singing rappers *shrug*
June 16th, 2011 at 1:37 am

SHUT THE FUCK UP!
June 16th, 2011 at 2:30 am

Worth The Wait!!! Excited For The Album
June 16th, 2011 at 7:02 am
Song is good. Can’t wait to get for it to get radio play.
Don’t know why people are expecting a deep single. No body is gonna shake there behind to lost ones in the club. SMH stop hyping J.Cole so much. ” You can play the game or watch the game play you, or be that broke mofo talking bout how he stayed true”
June 16th, 2011 at 7:32 am
Well this is what will happen when Cole tries to go mainstream.. It will be hit and miss on every try.. (miss with Who Dat, hit with In the Morning)..
Cole you want to make a classic and that is great.. First scrap Who Dat then this and you should be closer to your vision
June 16th, 2011 at 7:43 am
I like it. I think dude is super talented & I can’t wait to hear what else he has in store.
June 16th, 2011 at 8:39 am
This kids got what we call TALENT!
June 16th, 2011 at 8:44 am
Its dope n perfect for the single..a single is suppose to generate radio play n more buzz..pple actin like throughout cole’s mixtapes he hasn’t repeatedly made songs bout women..he isn’t the one dimensional type rapper..the thing that makes him great is because he is a regular n raps about the range of thoughts of a regular guy..sometimes I wanna save the world sometimes I jus get a girl..its that honesty that makes him great..he doesn’t act so deep that he can’t have regular desires..all that to say its hot..its a cool summer joint..and can’t wait for the album…ColeWorld!
June 16th, 2011 at 9:07 am
i agree with you but hes also making a lot of go to bed music aka as the snores. the beats hes been picking lately and his acceptance of mediocrity is disturbing to say the least. i saw him as the new nas. now he just seems like hed be better off as a producer.
June 16th, 2011 at 9:38 am
but see I don’t get that when pple say the “new nas” as if nas don’t have mad songs bout women, get blunted n drinkn..things that wouldn’t be considered “deep”..he is a combination of the MCs he grew up on..better off as a producer? Did u hear “lost ones”..his range of topics as an artist (from way back on the mixtapes) makes him great..not many can’t make a song like “lost ones” and make “work it out”..I jus can’t agree wit the acceptance of mediocrity on the beats or the verses themselves..pple need to stop calln him the new this guy or new that guy n stop comparing his singles to drake..drake does his thing but he can’t touch on the things cole does..jus let cole carve out his own lane..which he been doin
June 16th, 2011 at 10:46 am
Yo! Give the guy a break, when i heard on it, i liked it, its sounds like 2011 flow with the Roger joint, hot for the ladies, and a single. Do You Cold Wolrd.
June 16th, 2011 at 10:54 am
Oh, come on! This song is wack. When J Cole said he had used a Kanye sample I thought it would be something amazing. He keep going on and on about it like it was going to be a big deal. This is a disappointment. It will do worse then “Who Dat” as a single. SMH
J.Cole is the most overrated new rapper. There is nothing special about this dude lyrically, stylistically, he even has a plain sort of look to him. People just dub him as “the savior” because everything else that’s out is wack. But just because all the other rappers suck compared to dude, doesn’t make him good. He’s still an average ass rapper.
June 16th, 2011 at 11:45 am
not single material
Happy Bday TUPAC!!!
June 16th, 2011 at 11:48 am
Can I be your best friend?
want you round me all the time~
June 16th, 2011 at 12:13 pm
i understand you to a certain extend but your statement is an overkill.
he is a good rapper with lyrical ability. i just think he lacks the charisma.
hes dope but he doesnt come close to jay electronica, drake or slaughterhouse.
im gonna be pissed if in the morning is not on the album
June 16th, 2011 at 12:24 pm
hes not overrated lyrically
please just check out his mixtapes all three or four of them please.
as far as mainstream. i dont think this is the joint that will put him where he needs to be.
only way j cole is going to sell is if his underground fans like myself go out and actually buy his debut
June 16th, 2011 at 12:26 pm
Hello Sony Employee. I knew I seen this comment Somwhere lol
Sony Employee aka J. Cole aint never coming out = 2Gutta
June 16th, 2011 at 12:28 pm
but Nas Mainstream singes/records were records I liked too
June 16th, 2011 at 12:37 pm
cool song but to use it as a first single is pure fail. I can’t picture this getting a lot of play on urban radio or let alone pop radio
June 16th, 2011 at 3:06 pm
no i know nas had his songs about chicks but they were catchy and still had a point to it and were memorable.. jcoles not so. j seems like someone is going in a hat and they daring him to write to anything. i bump his albums daily but the new joints not at all. besides lost ones ive been ehhhh on this dude.
June 16th, 2011 at 9:27 pm
Yeah more than overkill. He easily matches drake and dont get me wrong drake has mad ability (i dont rock with the drake slayers).
But yeah his steeze is different, over here in the UK u gt mad girls feeling him even tho he doesnt exert that “ladies man” image. Also u got more dudes also who relate to him so trust he’s gonna do just fine.
June 16th, 2011 at 9:30 pm
But in the morning wasnt even an attemp at mainstream….that was a throwaway track like a year b4 drake jumped on it & cole changed his verses.
June 16th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
After a rapper changes his verses, puts another rapper who happens to have a buzz on it then that record my friend has become a new song.. Same beat same hook new song.. And therefor an attempt at getting some mainstream buzz.. And it worked.. Who Dat didn’t do that..
A Cole fan isn’t who Jay wants to reach.. Roc nation knows Cole fans from his mixtape days will more than likely download his album.. That’s just what hip hop heads do for the most part.. (ask Nas about that).. Crossover rappers know you have to have a single on the radio to eat.. Downloads, album sales and tour dates are all due to people having a hot single…
The point I was making was he will have a tough time making what will work on the radio.. He can’t make a song that hits hard enough by himself.. And please don’t bring up some mixtape track.. If it had crossover appeal with it just being him on it (Best I Ever Had) then it would have happened..
June 18th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
I’m a J-Cole fan. I understand what he was trying to do. But, lets keep it 100!! This shit weak as hell!!!! He failed. Being on Roc Nation he has access to any fucken producer he wants! He keep trying to do shit himself. That’s why cuz failin!! Cole yo’ beats cool, but not ready for mainstream appeal just yet. Good for Mixtape shit and other underground shit, but you can’t make dope mainstream hip hop beats yet! Stay in yo lane. Youz a great rapper. Fucken RAP!
-Dissapointed Fan

July 4th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
Yall are ridiculous, really just stfu cole will never see your comments so quit being critics and little a&r’s, singles are meant to be for the radio, thats what this is. the album will be classic.
July 29th, 2011 at 2:39 am

September 18th, 2011 at 10:22 pm
Probably more of a west coast 96 feel with the Roger Troutman Autotune is what mustafa meant… But yeah this don’t sound like no 96 stuff lol
