J.Cole’s VIBE Takeover: Favorite Lines, Meeting Nas and Beyonce, Advice From Jay-Z, Dr. Dre
Posted by Mikey Fresh under new music , quotes[8] Comments
Cole sat down with my homegirl Tracy G for a lengthy chat on a wide array of interesting talking points. Everything from Cole’s own favorite verses, his first time meet Nas and Beyonce, the best advice he got from Jay and Dr. Dre and more were covered. Check out this excerpt and the rest below.
J.Cole: I think I was trying to explain to Jay-Z something about why I couldn’t put out a particular record and said ‘Yo man, you gotta understand my fans look at me like I’m the chosen one. If I put that out they’ll look at me like I’m crazy.’ And he looked at me and said, ‘Yo, I could fill a graveyard full of chosen ones’ and went on to say how it’s about keeping old fans, but reaching new ones. So when said that it basically meant, ‘Do you want to be the chosen one and never grow?’ Because to me Cannabis was the chosen one in my book, but it never really panned out for him.
I also got some other great advice from Jay-Z. One time I was complaining about being on the road so much. My vibe was like how am I supposed to make an album the way I want to when I’m on the road so much. And he was like ‘Yo ni–a that’s where you need to be because that’s where you get these experiences. You go to the club, you saw what works and what doesn’t work. You get the stories so you can incorporate them in your verses better. “

It seems Mr.Carter can be a wealth of advice for those who choose to listen to him. Head strong and arrogant need not apply. This explains a number for things…

I feel the same way about canibus (thought he was the next one) in all fairness though wyclef mismanaged, mishandled and over-produced his project period, so its not quite the same thing a lot of factors contribute to stunted growth .not to mention the LL beef but in regards to artistically not growing that does come from not wanting to go pop ask wale lol
He should take Jay-z’s advice with a grain of salt though. Hes not on front line.

This explains a lot about why it took so long for Cole to come out. He genuinely wasn’t ready. He had/has a lot to learn about the music BUSINESS. If all you want to do is rap than just release mixtape and let the Hip Hop nerds continue to gush over you. But if you want to reap the benefits of all your hard work, provide for your family and be the “chosen one” like you say then you need to SALE some records. And you’re not going to do that without expanding your fanbase. Glad he finally sees that. I wish him all the success in the world.

Betta take advice. cause its his first record. if he fails he getting shelved. He needs some kinda pre-album strike. Not stupid like catching a case but maybe a children, school, charity event and do something a performance for free. venues like that come with free press.

why does anyone care about this guy at this point? and aren’t we so tired about guys that can ‘rhyme’ but can’t put an album together? guys like him are a dime a dozen.

What are you talking about… Have you listened to Friday Night Lights? We arent worried about whether he can put an album together… We know he has a sound on his mixtapes and friday night lights was put together like an album.
Aslong as the album tops that I will be happy and it should.

ugh. i’m loathe to reply, but…
he was ‘annointed’ over a year or so ago as the guy jay-z signed to his new label. that’s a big deal, no? the fact that he’s had ONE lead single and no album to follow should tell you that he doesn’t have the material ready to put an album out. guest starring and mixtapes are exactly what they sound like. read your comment again. and remember, jay-z’s boyhood chum (memphis bleek) had the keys to the kingdom and never learned to rule. some people can and some people can’t. since you’re such a huge fan, be sure to buy his album when it comes out. he’ll need it.
i’m too old to have these conversations. best of luck to you in your endeavors.

Its a shame that nowadays people are looked down upon when they take there time to put out a quality album/music. The people annoint folks and give them hype, but then talk bad about folks when they dont rush and put music out. This is why someone can say “its a slim chance i fall/ Olive Oile” and be considered the best rapper alive nowadays. Quantity does not equal quality.
