Justin Bieber: Bruised, Bloodied, and Grown Up for Complex’s 10th Anniversary
Posted by Mr.North under interview , photos , quotes[29] Comments
How do you celebrate 10-years in the magazine game? With an un-f*ck-witable cover, that’s how! Today, our fam at Complex unveils its decade-in-print anniversary issue, with an incredible cover by Justin Bieber. In the feature story, the pop superstar opens up to Joe La Puma while out in Paris. Biebs and JLP chat on his pop stardom, the much-anticipated Believe album, its new single “Boyfriend” which drops next week, haters, his love life, and plenty more.
On his rapping and the critics following his Biggie freestyle:
Some grumpy rap media outlets have griped about Bieber freestyling over classic beats like Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya,” but he shrugs the critics off. “I just rap for fun,” he says. “It’s nothing to take seriously. On my new album, I’m going to do a little bit of rapping.” He proceeds to spit a set of bars from “Boyfriend,” a song recorded for Believe. “Tell me what you like, dear/Tell me what you don’t/I could be your Buzz Lightyear/Fly across the globe/You don’t even need to fight, dear/You already know/I can make you shine bright/Like you’re laying in the snow/Burr.” Yeah, JayBee’s up on Gucci Mane, too.
Read another excerpt, plus view the second cover and behind-the-scenes footage of Bieber’s photoshoot for Complex, after the jump…..
Justin Bieber’s growing up. He turned 18 on March 1—it’s hard to believe he stepped on the scene just three years ago. It’s not often that a pop star transitions to adulthood before our eyes. Michael Jackson did it, as did the other Justin—Timberlake, that is. Both are legends in their own right who graduated from boy bands to spectacular solo careers. But there haven’t been many who’ve done it as a solo artist on both sides of the jump. Bieber’s about to break the mold with his new album, Believe. When all is said and done, this kid could be the biggest pop star of this generation. But are his current crop of fans ready for their idol to grow up? And equally important, does Justin want to make the sacrifices that go along with being the new King of Pop?
Justin Bieber on his relationship with Selena Gomez:
Justin’s outlook on the relationship is realistic. Although he’s not ready to answer the question of whether he’s in love, he’s not trying to conceal his feelings for Gomez anymore. “There’s no way to hide the relationship completely, because then it would be unfair to us,” he says. “It’s like, ‘You take this car, and I’ll take this car, and then we’ll meet up at the spot. Then, you go in this door, I’ll go in this door. We’ll end up crossing ways. You get back in this car. We’ll cross over, do a James Bond. You go through the kitchen. I’ll go through the back area. Then we’ll meet in the dressing room and see each other.’ At that point, it’s not even a relationship. You’re just hiding from everyone. That’s unfair and unhealthy, man.” With that, he polishes off the extra plate of broccoli he requested from the waiter and heads back to his hotel room to retire for the night.

ummmm, there is nothing “unfuckwithable” about justin bieber.
its a horribly gay cover, and the fact that your dickriding your sponsor over it, shows how little integrity you have.
corny as fuck.
bad post.

“gay”? hahahaa. wow. gotta love the guys who see “gay” everywhere. ahem.
And I don’t think it’s “dickriding” I honestly think that this kid has done amazing things, whether or not I personally listen to his pop songs myself. It’s also very telling because he’s moving into new territory….specifically a more grown up one that I reside in.
As for “integrity”….Complex Magazine actually doesn’t “sponsor” shit for me. I just happen to like and support them because they support me in life and work all the time. The parent company, the Complex Media Network handles my ads. The brands and corporations that want to pay for space on my pages “sponsor” me. I don’t have to post everything Complex does. And I dont.
Anyone who operates without any relationships and responsibilities, is probably living at home with their mama. Wait, no…then you’re still responsible to your mama.
Thanks for the feedback though, I totally understand if you hate Bieber and the post and even Complex. But this cover is really well done.

so you have a relationship with the parent company?
how is that NOT a conflict of interest?

huh? conflict? You must not understand what a “conflict of interest” is.
But sure, spin your outrage into a cotton candy cone of conspiracy : )

Illuminati? Huh? why mention dumb shit just to deflect a legitimate question
“A conflict of interest (COI) occurs when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation for an act in the other.”
cmon Miss Info.
your rep is built on the fact that you’re a ‘head’. A female one, too. That’s the brand that helped build your following.
So when you post poppy stuff to help friends of yours and/or to coax the tween reading base, content that your core (?) ‘hip hop’ fanbase dislikes, that’s a conflict of interest.
don’t play dumb.
You’re allowed to disagree and call me out. But please don’t pretend I’m some illuminati-spouting-simp-hater.

maybe the cover is well done, itd be perfect for disney.com…too bad this is a hiphop site.
big-up complex one more time, and then explain yourself some more.

all im saying is that you have a blog focused on a demographic & im pretty sure 99.9% of the people who come here arent checking for justin bieber updates. you can fluff complex or give your readers what they want, hence my comment about integrity.

check the “life beyond rap” category. My demo is rap, and pop culture, and random, and puppies, and fashion, and sad core, and LOST, and Louis CK, and Dipset.
I think you need something more narrow-minded for your tastes. So this may not be the place for you.
Was it ok when we posted Bieber’s Speakin’ Tungs youtube? I hope you weren’t so outraged.
Thank you for visiting!

this is the question you should be asking yourself: if a magazine other than complex put out this cover, would you post it?
of course not. case in point.

if a hip hop or urban mag did…. yes. Like Vibe or Respect or XXL. Complex falls into that category. Meanwhile, Vanity Fair or Interview, not so much.
but since you’re psychic, you already knew I’d say that.
have a great day!

i visit this blog very often.
i’m pretty sure she or one of her staff members would’ve posted this whether it came from Complex or not, owing to the fact that it’s a sensational, unexpected image of a huge pop star.
not that it matters anyway. Even if she posted it only because of Complex, there’s no lack of integrity in having a relationship that involves some sharing of content. this is a blog; you don’t pay for access to the content. manage your expectations.

Covering 1 eye? hmmmmmm??? When are the hip hop elite taste makers (Info, YN, Combat Jack etc…) going to muster the courage to call out the establishment that controls our culture in order to use our creativity for evil purposes? There are no more excuses to be in denial about this? Can we please wake up and take back our child (hip hop).

the realness needs anger management.
If you don’t like this post then just don’t click on it and read the other posts that are on this website. It’s not that hard. Getting mad over a magazine and a blog website is pretty stupid.

I think it’s a good cover. Any one making “gay” comments is just stupid. I personally don’t listen to his music so to hate him for no reason is dumb. It might not be your cup of tea but I’m sure not all rappers are to everyone’s liking either. To say that Justin shouldn’t be on this site because he doesn’t fit in doesn’t even make sense. Look at all the hip-hop artist who’ve worked with him or shouted him out, many who are main stream big names. Lastly it’s Missinfo.tv She’s welcome to post what ever she wants.

My question concerning this cover: who’s fighting against JB? He has had a meteoric rise to the top with no real interference or major obstacles. He put some videos on YouTube, mom groomed him and aligned him with some powerful management, he got cosigned by Usher. The cover just seems to present a “struggle” where there is none.
I respect dude’s talent and wish him continued success, but I don’t think this cover 1)is that great 2)that Complex should have chose JB for their 10th anniversary issue and 3) that it matches with JB in any way. I just don’t get the point. Just my thoughts though.

Info – longtime reader. You’re content is quality and no one with half of a brain has ever doubted your integrity. You know as well as anybody that people –emboldened by the cloak of anonymity — often say outlandish things in the comments section to get a rise out of people. In fact, have you ever seen that BBC episode where they tracked down a guy saying outlandish things on the internet.
Anyway, back on topic, keep the great content coming.
