Drake Actually Looks Forward to His Album Leaks: “It’s Only Gonna Help Me”
Posted by Mikey Fresh under new music , quotes[22] Comments
Drizzy has been taking his album leak in stride. He already addressed it briefly on Twitter. Much like J. Cole, he’s thankful it leaked with only 8 days left before Take Care’s official release. Back in October, Billboard actually presented Drake with this very scenario and asked his thoughts on his albums leaking early.
“I look forward to leaks-knock on wood. I shouldn’t probably, but I do. Like I said, if it’s a reasonable leak, I look forward to it. We’re all sitting here in the studio like, “Oh man the night this leaks, it’s gonna be so crazy!” People talk about, “Are you gonna go on the Internet? Are you gonna stay off the Internet? What are you gonna do?”
40 protects the music really well, and I think God willing I get like the same thing I’m talking about, like a 10 day leak. And that’s something I’d be extremely excited about because I feel like if people get the opportunity to live with the music for a week before they go buy it, it’s only gonna help me, not hurt me. So I’m looking forward to hearing the feedback from everyone-that’s gonna be an exciting night when it comes out.

Billboard: J. Cole’s album “Cole World: A Sideline Story” leaked a week early and then came in at No. 1. There’s been talk that positive reception to his leak spurred sales.
Drake: I agree. I think that giving people the opportunity to judge before they go and buy, I think that can only help. There’s a loyal fan base that’s gonna go and support you just based off the fact that they want to own a copy of your material, and they know what it means to give you that one sale, and they hope that there’s another hundred, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, five hundred thousand people that are gonna do the same thing. And then there’s genuinely the people who heard it that night and were like, “Yo, I need to support this, I need to go buy it, I need to own this.” His leak was like 10 days before, seven days before. I think those leaks are very beneficial to artists who have the product, who can reel people in with their music as opposed to turning people off.
Billboard: Do you anticipate leaks? Is that something you factor in and assume is going to happen?
Drake: Yeah, always. I look forward to leaks-knock on wood. What are you gonna do?” And [producer Noah "40" Shebib] has his own views of what he wants to do, and I have my own idea of what that night’s gonna be like for me. The thing about 40, as well as being a great producer and great musician, he’s also an incredible, incredible engineer and protector of our music. He set us up a system for this album that I think worked very well. We’ve suffered no leaks. I’ve heard rumor of a couple records floating around out there that people are just listening to for their own personal enjoyment, like early demos and sh– like that. But most of the records that they’re talking about are features, so you know, usually when you start sending to other camps, stuff gets a little messy.

Yeah I agree,I will be purchasing this as well. like everyone else i downloaded the leak; I must say his album caught me off guard; switched up his flow in every other song and conceptually projected his songs from all angles. Surprised I was only expecting a album composed of fame and female concepts but he went deeper than that.
For those that appreciate subtle cleverness and craftsmanship with the pen get this album you wont be dissapointed. Drake made J. Cole album look like child’s play. I don’t mind him leaking it himself he’s in touch with the people and understands that the mixtape viral circulation is what got him to where he is (fans will reward him for putting them first) as opposed to the “no-leaks” watch the throne mentality that’s still in the 90′s

Well I just listened to it and I’m not really impressed. The beats were on point but it doesn’t feel like a polished or fully finished project. It feels like something that was rushed and put together for the sake of makig an album, not a piece of art like he said it would be. There are some nice joints on it but as an overall project, I think it could’ve been much better. And to think, he was supposed to save rap SMH…….
Oh btw, why are guys mixtapes better than their albums? Fab, J. Cole and this dude. Their last mixtapes (so far gone in drakes case) were much better than the albums they put out. I wonder why?

because the labels don’t have control on the mixtapes.

Don’t let physical copies out and don’t email to many tracks. Leaks are inevitable though because they have ship to vendors about a week ahead so your always going to have at least a 7 day leak. that’s why any answer besides I look forward to the leak is dumb because it’s going to happen.

Take Care isn’t as bad as people are saying, I think it’s just bandwagon bashing. The best tracks are at the end of the album which is opposite from most other albums.

Maybe cop a girl before you cop the album. I see shorties swaying, waving their hands to this LP. That’s all that matters. Right? Right?

i dont think people realize that rap is not all about guns and and drugs and all that other stuff that people hear in other rap songs. Rap is about talking about issues, issues you can relate to. Drake music is music you can relate to. Rap doesnt need anyone to save it its the fans that need to be saved with their out of proportions critiques

I grew up on the hot boys and after hearing that song practice I almost vomit. I hope he got juvenile and mannie fresh permission to do that song even if baby owns the publishing. This dude can’t sing. So why do people act like his horrible singing is some type of talent. He’s a better rapper

hot album, it is def a rnb album and not a rap/hiphop album. the production and beats are on point especially for drake. people may hate on the fact that its not what they expected it to be but listening to all of his mixtapes and album, this album is the evolution of his sound from day one. people need to respect the art of music and his development as an artist and not whats hot or not to them
