Homesick for Chi-City: Kanye’s new “Homecoming” video
Posted by Miss Info under about miss info , good for me , videos[83] Comments
Love this song and this new video, Kanye and Chris Martin “Homecoming.”
Weird timing because I’ve been feeling extremely homesick lately, and I’ve also been overloading on Coldplay for some reason….hmm. (cue rod steiger)
Nothing that a lil Hecky’s rib tips can’t cure.
(Spotted at nahright)

I forgot you had ties to the Chi. I’ve been there a couple times briefly but never to Evanston.
How are Hecky’s ribs?
I haven’t been able to find great ribs since Jerry’s Kitchen Cafe in Chelsea (14th & 8th) closed mysteriously around 2006. Have you ever had the ribs there? The greatest ribs of all time. It broke my heart. I never got to say goodbye.
Still hurts to this day, like I a friend that moved away.

Navy? Hmm… Oh, wait, I think I know what you mean…
Do you mean Army and Lou’s?
I’ve been out of the city for a lot of years so it took me a minute to catch that one.
Ok, so you also remember the ghetto Dominos AKA Reggios right?

Isn’t it weird that folk we know are going to the same place to grab a drink that their parents did 20 years ago?

Why dis NY pizza? I’m not going to slam Chicago pizza just because I prefer NY thin slices over deep dish. It’s apples and oranges. You may have grown up on deep dish, so a NY slice may taste like caca to you. I respect that. So, respect my pizza.
There’s plenty of great seafood in NYC, you just haven’t found it yet. I suggest Sheepshead Bay, BK. Lots of great places. Not very expensive at all.
I am taking notes about great BBQ in the Chi. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m there. I’m on a quest to find a rib I can love like Jerry’s. I haven’t found it yet.

@pierre…its so funny because I always try to explain to folks the chicago aesthetic that I grew up on….its all about 17 year olds who act like 50 year olds. When I was growing up it was eldorados over lexuses, slang like “old bird” and “rachet,” and line dancing at old lounges, lol…..

My best friend has dj’ed at the dating game. the place looks like it used to be a strip club at one time.
i’m not sure if it was there or at visions where the music cut off for a minute, and some dude got on the mic to let everybody know that the chicken and fish was ready in the back room.
favorite pizza spot in chi – pequad’s. oh, how could i forget lou malnati’s thin crust. if the crust were any thinner you’d be eating a cracker.
harold’s is cool, but you have to know which ones to go to. the one in hyde park is one of the better ones. with the hot sauce drizzled on top. (drool)
i was down in roseland the other day and saw some sanford and son type spot that sold “louisiana shrimp” and bunk beds.
i just moved here from san francisco (yay areaaaaaaa), which is often hailed as some culinary mecca, but i think the food in chicago’s much better.
hey info, what’s some good korean spots to hit up out here? i been to so gong dong tofu house. chige was pretty damn good, but their banchan was kinda eh.

red dirt…..a foodie after my own heart!!!
totally forgot about malnati’s! I loved that spot, did they have that breading on the bottom of the crust? I think its like what they make polenta out of or something? think it keeps it crispy….
my prob is that I’m totally not up on any new spots in chicago….so I need the help more than you.
But I can def tell you where to get good Korean bc my parents eat out often. Now, there is one korean place that was actually the best korean I’ve ever had outside of LA’s Ktown, but 1) it was in a chicago suburb, tht was random and out the way. 2) it was fancy, so I’m assuming it was prolly expensive.
I’ll ask for the name.
I also like some of the grittier places in Chicago’s ktown bc they use the charcoal to cook the kalbi. Sure you smell like meat for a week but it tastes much better.
And also, there’s a japanese spot that my family always goes to that is amazing. Its like comepletely lowkey, like japanese home cooking, amazing sushi, not fancy, not $$…i wish I had a place like that here in ny.
Again, I gotta find the name.
sorry, lol.

People need to respect my pizza. People come from all around the world to have a NY slice. Friends and fam from Cali always love the pizza here when they try it for the first time.
You can’t get a decent slice or a decent bagel in LA.
Reply
April 1st, 2008 at 5:49 pm
that would be cornmeal, miss. gives the crust that nice crunch. and yes, you do make polenta out of it and cornbread, as well.
you know you can mail order malnati’s via a toll free number, and they’ll ship you your pizza overnight in dry ice?
i don’t mind shelling out a couple extra bucks if the food is that good.
haha @ miss info with no info. and you spell probably the same way that i do! ha!
maybe i’ll just roam around ktown and check out a few spots (why did i not think about that before? duh)

@MissInfo… I know what you mean, I grew up wanting the slant back Caddy or a Monte Carlo. People are different in the Chi. It’s near impossible to understand from the outside. I think the world is starting to see this as more rappers from Chicago break. They thought Common was just a curiosity because he was a different kind of guy, but then Kanye hit… now folks know something is different about the city itself.
Even the gangsters are different. Where else do you have gangs mobilizing to elect officials that promise to do good for the community?
I LOVE New York, but when I think about where I would want to raise kids I have to give Chicago the nod because there’s something in the water that keeps their heads on straight.

@pierre…lol…nothing struck home with me more about nmy hometown than when that scandal hit that the school system was hiring GDs and Folks to actually be hall monitors..HA! that was genius until it got busted. The Wire’s “Hamsterdam” doesnt have anything on real life in Chi.
But I will say that the water doesnt always make the kids straight. Because there’s more than alot of really messed up things that happen at home.
Remember Yummy Sandifer? (not sure if im messing up the spelling) That was one of the saddest scariest stories.
His entire short life was one tragedy.

Oh absolutely. That kid’s story was tragic. There’s messed up stories in every city. Chicago doesn’t have a halo around it. I’ve walked the halls of the Icky’s. Hung out in the Robert Taylor homes with friends that lived there. Everything isn’t sweet so you are always going to have stories like that here and there.
Actually I’m most hurt by the amount of racism in Chicago that isn’t declining as much as it is in other major cities. There’s less multicultural tolerance/acceptance in Chicago than NY. When it comes to this I’m sure you have a very interesting view on it that I would love to hear.
But, with all of that said, look at what’s happening in NY with the rise of the Bloods and Crips. Why? Chicago has had gangs forever, hell, my hat stayed to the left as a kid if you know what I’m sayin. But they don’t run wildstyle like the youngins in NY. It’s all because of the different mentality that you mentioned. Those 16 or 17 year olds are 40 year olds in the head.
I think it comes down to this, and I don’t think people from outside the city will understand when I say this, folks in the hood in Chicago want more and support anyone trying to get it. More for their family, their community, and their people. I’ve lived in LA, Houston and Philly and I can honestly say the folks in Chicago are different in that respect. Not that the people in other cities don’t want progress, but Chicago’s folks just have a different mentality. It’s no surprise that Barack was allowed to grow there. It fits.

I’m not the 5 borough water ice expert so I will have to check out the Lemon Ice king. If you say he’s that good I’ll take your word for it.
But, we were talking that indefensible flat ass, 3 ingredient NY pizza made by Juan, Herve and Pedro in a shop owned by Sal Gambino.
It doesn’t compare to DEEP dish, 4 food groups in one slice, Chicago pizza. It’s an event, not just something quick and fast after the club.
You can’t take a date to Sals as a destination for great night out, but you can at any one of the deep dish places in Chicago… and you will win every time. Why, because it’s that good.

Best Filipino BBQ – Ihawan – Roosevelt Ave (7 train) Jackson Heights. Really cheap. It’s the best. Filipinos come from different states to have it. It’s a hole in the wall, so you have to look carefully.
If you just wander along Roosevelt Ave, you’ll find a lot. All good. Filipino, Latin, Irish, Thai. Arguably the best burger in NYC is @ Donovan’s Pub in Woodside. You can also straighten out your immigration status, learn English, buy bootleg clothes, you can do it all.

Your girl Info is a NY Mag hater, though….I’m not a big cheesecake eater, but that place La Cheesecake that I mentioned before has great apple (or other fruit) crumb pie. Getting out there is just a bitch and remembering what days they’re open is equally bitch-ass (they only sell to the public on certain days), but getting a fresh-baked apple crumb pie from there for under $20 is well worth the effort.

I’m back!!!
I’m gonna let my goal be known from the start/beginning.
I wish to provoke thought in one crucial area in many peoples lives in hopes that it will indirectly provoke thought in other areas of there lives so they can better understand there position on the grand chessboard of life.
I’m only gonna focus on religion and belief systems that my people hold, which has something to do with everything in there life(including the state of hiphop)
This will be my first installment of a series of information that I’m going to provide that will be aimed at poking holes in religions weak theory’s
As I have stated before, religion has its roots in ancient mythological stories and fiction.
In this installment I will focus on the theory of the great flood of noah that is written in the bible.
Check it out.
The story of a Great Flood sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution is a widespread theme among many cultural myths. Though it is best known in modern times in the Western world through the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark, it is also well known in other versions, such as stories of Matsya in the Hindu Puranas, Deucalion in Greek mythology and Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh.
Ancient sumeria:
The earliest extant Flood myth is found on the fragmentary stone tablets of the Sumerian Eridu Genesis, datable by its script to the 17th century BC.The Sumerian myth tells how the god Enki warns Zi-ud-sura (meaning “he saw life,” in reference to the gift of immortality given him by the gods), of the gods’ decision to destroy mankind in a flood – the passage describing why the gods have decided this is lost. Enki instructs Ziusudra to build a large boat – the text describing the instructions is also lost. After a flood of seven days, Zi-ud-sura makes appropriate sacrifices and prostrations to Anu (sky-god) and Enlil (chief of the gods), and is given eternal life in Dilmun (the Sumerian garden of Eden) by Anu and Enlil.
The ancient Akkadians(google Atrahasis Epic)
gives human overpopulation as the cause for the great flood. After 1200 years of human fertility, the god Enlil felt disturbed in his sleep due to the noise and ruckus caused by the growing population of mankind. He turned for help to the divine assembly who then sent a plague, then a drought, then a famine, and then saline soil, all in an attempt to reduce the numbers of mankind. All these were temporary fixes. 1200 years after each solution, the original problem returned. When the gods decided on a final solution, to send a flood. The god Enki, who had a moral objection to this solution, disclosed the plan to Atrahasis, who then built a survival vessel according to divinely given measurements. To prevent the other gods from bringing such another harsh calamity, Enki created new solutions in the form of social phenomena such as non-marrying women, barrenness, miscarriages and infant mortality, to help keep the population from growing out of control.
ancient babylon:
In the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, toward the end of the He who saw the deep version by Sin-liqe-unninni, there are references to the great flood (tablet 11). This was a late addition to the Gilgamesh cycle, largely paraphrased or copied verbatim from the Epic of Atrahasis (see above). The hero Gilgamesh, seeking immortality, searches out Utnapishtim (whose name is a direct translation into Akkadian of the Sumerian Zi-ud-sura) in Dilmun, a kind of paradise on earth. Utnapishtim tells how Ea (equivalent of the Sumerian Enki) warned him of the gods’ plan to destroy all life through a great flood and instructed him to build a vessel in which he could save his family, his friends, and his wealth and cattle. After the Deluge the gods repented their action and made Utnapishtim immortal.
Does any of this stuff sound familiar to you christians, jews(and rastas)LoL!
Let’s check out how the plagerized hebrew version of the story goes…
The ancient hebrews:
The record in the book of Genesis says, “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and was grieved in His heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am grieved that I have made them.God selects Noah who “found favor in the eyes of the LORD” and commands him to build an ark. God instructed the ark’s construction to be three hundred cubits (450 feet/137 m) long, fifty cubits (75 feet/23 m) wide, and thirty cubits (45 feet/14 m) high. Then God commanded Noah to put one pair of unclean animals and seven pairs of clean animals. After Noah builds the ark, “all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened” by God. It rains for 40 days. “The water prevailed upon the earth one hundred and fifty days. The water recedes for 150 days. On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark rests upon the mountains of Ararat. After 40 days on the mountain, Noah opens up the ark. “Then God spoke to Noah, saying, ‘Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you.Everyone and every animal exits the ark to fruitfully repopulate the Earth.

yup, l&l is more of a hawaiian bbq spot. i’m quite surprised they have one in new york, although i shouldn’t be considering they have a couple out in the bay areaaaaa and one in chicago, too. of course l&l’s food is much better in hawaii.
in hawaii the ice cream trucks don’t sell ice cream. instead you can get manapua, pork hash, noodles, and shaved ice.
spam is everywhere out there, too. you can get spam with your eggs at all the mcdonalds, and all the 7-11s sell spam musubi.
when i moved to cali i found it odd how everybody was grossed out at just the thought of eating spam.

Not Hawaiian, but I grew up on spam and fried bologna, and look how I turned out.
Let’s see how long we can keep this post going.

@Randy… yeah, I think Info doesn’t mess with NY Mag like us regular folks cause she’s bumped up her restaurant game to a different level.
She’s secretly a Zagat’s review consultant.
Ya’ll know damn well those Zagat’s people are scared to go deep in Queens, Harlem & Brooklyn for the real shit. So, they must be paying Info for the lowdown because she’s obviously mastered her hood palate.
I’m convinced.

forge….if you have time, check out http://www.chowhound.com and look for the manhattan or outer borough boards. you can search for “best” anything and get really good answers.
If there’s anything specific you wanna ask me, then go to http://www.mogulus.com/missinfotv and see if I’m on…I always love talking about food.
i didnt kno there was a homecoming with john l…but is it better? All I can think of when I hear his name is that video of him getting aroused while grinding onstage with an audience member. hilarious

@ Info – How do you know that only 3 people will understand/care about a food post? Other people are reading this post and comments I’m sure. Some people may not be interested in a post unless there are a lot of comments. Who knows?
Post the letter from Mr. Hecky. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. But, anyway, who cares if it’s wrong? Last time I checked, the home page said “Miss Info” at the top. Do what you want.
@ Pierre – Actually, Mrs. Zagat is a former Trusts and Estates attorney. She had some really big clients and I’m sure she and her husband were very well off way before the restaurant guide. And, I would guess that she and her husband wouldn’t go into the outer boros on their own. They gotta have people like Info on the payroll. Which could be why she opposes NY Mag so hard.
I gotta say, Zagat has steered me wrong a couple of times.
