hmm, the top 3 look right to me. But that TI at 10 feels off….I feel like Andre being on there is the quality gift to offset the horrible reality of Rick Ross….but Snoop and 50 should be in different places I think. (Lower for one and higher for the other)

UPDATE: yeah, I think I agree with some of your comments. For one, there really is an argument as for why Souljah Boy deserves a spot on there. History will diminish that argument over the years but for right now, he probably should have been in there, especially if Lupe does. In fact, as a measure of overall “hotness” without quality judgement, Souljah probably deserves a spot instead of Lupe.
I also agree with the reader who said Hov and Weezy should be switched. If corporate power doesn’t help 50 rank higher than 6, than it shouldn’t put Hov above Wayne’s cult-like fan fervor. Also, I think Game does deserve a spot there too. He’s certainly somewhat of a rap outkast, and not the most reliable character, but he garners alot of attention and can spit.

if i can listen to an artists entire album from start to finish then to me lupe should be higher up on the list. thats a solid album. besides they had to vote on whether soulja boy should be on the list which i thought was stupid. i would put jeezy over rick ross especially since the song with him and kanye just dropped and lupe over 50

I hate to say it but they made a very good argument on why Soulja Boy should be on the list but I still can’t see how T.I. gets the number 10 spot. I’m not a Soulja Boy fan at all but based on popularity(you just can’t ignore 3 Million ringtone buys) he’s hot so he should be number 10. And if Andre 3000 can make it on the list based on 2 hot verses why can’t Soulja Boy make the list based on one insanely popular song.

That list is all kinds of suspect. I figured Ye would be #1 since he had the biggest rap album in the U.S. That was a no brainer. Jay Z #2? No way. He definitely should be lower. That is not his tour that is Mary’s tour moreso than his in actual ticket draw, puhleeze. I respect Jay but come on. Oh Rick Ross I agree should be on the list, but NOT AT #4. He should be much lower. Fif was robbed and shoulda been higher. Fif’s album was the #1 selling rap album internationally and he’s the biggest touring international hip hop artist period, I mean neither Ye nor Jay are sellin out in Kosovo or India. I sensed serious fif hate on that panel. LOL They wanted to bring up fif’s misses from b4 the 2007 list came out but not all of Wayne’s leaks that were misses b4 Lollipop? Very selective memory there. Anyway, Snoop should be lower. Where the hell was Common? Young Jeezy has no business on the list. TI’s appearance is questionable, but I can live wit him at 10. And altho I love Andre he shoulda been higher on the list LAST YEAR. He has no business on the list this year. I think they got a bit confused at times on whether this was a hottest emcee list or a hottest emcee of all time list.

I purposely missed the show and don’t plan on watching. And as my focus zeroed in on this list, I was preparing myself to see Souljah Boy on here. Thankfully he never appeared.

Is this for all time or just who’s hot right now?? I think its an admirable list (not that these have particular meaning anyway ) that tries to say something about rappers but I am really feelin madlib (beat cd’s with no rhymes are quite refreshing actually!!) so I dunno, to me its just a list and nothing more. I have never heard Rick Ross before. I feel like Bun B should be there too. Maybe I need to go listen to some Ross. From your comments it seems as though it would be a waste of time. Hmm lot of faults imo, jeezy should be high because of he usher song, his own with ye and various remixes and lupe should switch with ross, on the other side of the atlantic they play Hip hop saved my life many times but boss/speedin dont get much airtime, but thats here and not in the us so guess its not such a big deal… other points’ that 50 cent been chilly since ayo technologi, and that was a while so he could jump down some. I disagree with their top 3. 50 should’ve been in the top 3, hands down. He’s been killin’ the mixtape circuit this year. They initially had 50 at 5 and Snoop at 6, and I felt like they should’ve kept it that way, AT LEAST. Snoop didn’t even belong in the top 5. at least commercially, this list is decently accurate, besides the placement of rick ross (should not be on the list) and ti (should be higher.
its a shame that the commercial list is looks like this, i was at the glow in the dark concert last week and these mtv kids don’t know anything besides top 40 hits. they just wanna hear those on repeat 24/7, no matter how devoid of substance some of those songs may be.

How does Andre make this list? I mean seriously, he might be talented but there is nobody talking about him. The only people mentioning Andre are the people who put him on the list. Outside of them ain’t nobody talking about him so how is that hot?
Rick Ross deserved to make the list. He is putting out consistent material and he is selling well. So well that people are genuinely surprised and coming up with def jam conspiracy theories on how he is selling.
Soulja boy definitely should have made that list. He is lyrically garbage but you can’t deny his impact right now. Andre should be off and Soulja should be on. Andre’s skills>>>>>>Soulja boys skill, but thats not all this list is based off of.
Lil Wayne should have been number 2. You don’t have to drop an album to be hot. It didn’t stop him from being #1 first time around so why should it stop him from being #2? Especially since he has one of the biggest singles out right now with lolli pop.
50 Cent got a good spot on the list. He is still talked about but he is sorta inconsistent so he doesn’t deserve top 5.
TI shouldn’t have been on this list. He’s not doing enough to be on the list. His last single flopped and he is MIA because of his legal situation. Fat Joe, Plies, Shawty Lo, The Game, and Soulja Boy all are doing more right now to make the list then TI is.

Im gonna have to disagree with you Info, Lupe belonged on that list last year. Did you hear food and liquor and The Cool was a great follow up to that album, lyricism at it’s best. I love Andre 3000 he’s amazing but he just doesn’t have enough material to be considered one of the hottest MC’s right now. He is one of the hottest MC’s period. If thats the case there are alot of 3-4 verse per year rappers that should make the list. I agree with the top three just not in that order. Lil Wayne belongs at #1 again for remaining so relevant with no album out and continually smashing every remix that he gets on. Kanye makes a good fight for number #1 but he is my number #2 by the way did you hear the lollipop remix Kanye is the only MC to spit along side Wayne and not get outshined twice to be exact. As for Rick Ross you guy gotta be joking and Souljah boy is not an MC so he should not even be mentioned even though he had such a great year doing what he does.

Where were you last night 3 minutes after it ended when I checked your blog to see what you had to say/add input?! day late, nothin short, here goes
1) J.Ortiz shoulda made the list…at number 10. He’s on everyones lips right now (no homo) and if you’ve slept on his talent over the past year you’re living under a rock.
2) Gucci Mane should have made the list. Hate all you want, but dudes blowin up in the south right now and you know what that means (not that he’s wack..more that he’s gonna have atleast 2-3 more singles this year that’ll get rotation). Same with Yo’ Gotti. I been bumpin both for a while and they’re just gettin heavy in the mixtape circuit yet, no love? I get they dont have solid albums to boast about, but if Wayne can gas up to number one offa mixtapes last year, why stop now?
3) Nas should be on this list as well, most everything he’s done in the past year has been solid along with Hip Hop Is Dead..
4) So who to take off? thats a problem cause i can only think to take off Snoop, 50 and Lupe. I dig Snoop and Lupe, but idk if I could put them on a hottest now list. And 50’s been puttin material out because he’s got the loot to fund it, I really dont know many cats that still bump dude like that.
So yeah, just input…and really, I could see Soulja Boy, Flo-Rida and Mike Jones with what people consider hot right now.
And is hottest the same as most popular? cause if so that defeats my argument for gucci/gotti. Cause people who listen to rap most likely know them, but people who wait to see who’s famous may not right now.
oh and fuck mtv for showing The Clipse like they were even gonna mention Push or Mal..

this list is so wrong it’s not even funny! I’m sorry but how can anyone be “hot” with only 3 songs out? (Andre 3000) Don’t get me wrong I like 3000 but if they didn’t give Wayne the top spot because he hasn’t released an album then what does that say for Andre? Rick Ross and Snoop are hotter than 50??? That’s totally absurd, Snoop has ONE hot song out and that gets him ahead of 50? Ego Trippin wasn’t even that solid of an album. I agree with most names on the list, but the order of the names is something to be questioned. I love Andre 3000, but if it’s a list of hottest mc’s and you put out one or two songs in that period, you can’t come near the rest of the people who put out an album and some mixtapes. Lupe should have been in the top 5 (instead of rick ross, maybe), The Cool was a classic album, and just because he’s different from the rest of the rappers, he should be considered a lot hotter. Soulja Boy should stay out of the list for good. Am I the only one to notice that there isn’t even a word about Chamillionaire? He had, probably one of the best 3 albums in the last year and the boy isn’t mentioned at all, i guess you have to say profanities to get on the list.

I’ve been reading about Soulja Boy and I gotta agree that he should be on the list. Dude has been doing his thing from like June 07 til now. All yall fools have been doin the Crank Dat at your family reunion and wedding receptions. I’m 25 and yes, while dude will probably be #500 in the 2009 MC list, he should be in top 10 now. Rick Ross, ehhhh I mean I guess. I don’t know what Andre 3000 has appeared on this year so I don’t know why he’s on here but he delivers so I don’t have a problem with it.

As far as this list i feel that the panels reasons were a little subjective especially against 50 and more so favoring TI and Snoop. Rick Ross wouldnt be at the top of my list for favorite MCs but he definately put his work in this year. The top 3 should have been kayne, weezy or 50 in any order. As much as I like Andre 3000 he should have been replaced with Soulja Boy (cant wait for his animated response to this list). And i definately feel some 50 resentment on that panel.

i agreed and disagreed with some of the things u said. someone needs to tell mtv to stop makin these corny lists or at least tell them to change the name to “Top 10 Commercial Artists” or somethin like that cuz we’re all used to “Top 10″ bein top 10 of all time and still puttin out quality music….so with that bein said, lil wayne is the #1 artist right now cuz his album is the most anticipated, he has alot of fans and if u ask any lil kid about him they’ll tell u he’s hot rite now, all the records he’s on gets alot of spins, he’s on magazine covers, etc., #2 is kanye because he’s startin that taliban scarf fashion and he’s killin the glow in the dark tour and #3 is 50 cuz he’s constantly in the media, he put out 2 mixtapes this year for download, and he constantly has records spinnin on the radio. rick ross is up there cuz he put out some quality singles from his last album and the album b4 that and his songs gets spins on the radio. T.I. should be higher up cuz he has a strong fan base and even though he’s had legal issues, he jus put out a single and it’s gettin crazy spins on the radio and he’ll outsell most artists. soulja boy should not be on there based on 1 single and ringtone sales pleaseeeee………someone’s mom could’ve bought that ringtone cuz they liked the beat. he has no fan base and is not on any magazine covers. and his single was so last year. lupe is up there cuz he has a strong fan base and he got ppl jockin his style. not to mention that he put out quality singles that get radio spins and quality albums. he also sold out this month’s performance @SOB’s like a month ago (which joell ortiz and pharoahe monch didn’t do)……but real hip hop fans know the real top 10 list commercially would only include A-List artists, which is a balance of what they achieved and if they’re still puttin out quality music and their rhyme skills. 1. Hmmn, the list is OK. I gotta say if the list about the hottest mc, ie. who has most hype. Who people most listen to. Who people are talking about on the net and in life. Whats big in the clubs. I think the list should be different.
If you disregard talent and just look at what people like the list would be very different.
Top 3 should be 1. Kanye, 2. Lil Wayne, 3. 50 Cent. Coz this is what people like and what they listen to and this is whats big in the club. Look on the blogs and youl see people are interested in these 3, they wanna know everything about these 3.
That is why there is an arguement for Soljaboytellem. DJs play crank that in the club and everybody smiling. Everyone loves that song in the club.
With andre3000 too. He releases very little. But when he puts out a verse everybodys ears prick up. And people listen, listen hard. And we wild out to his lyrics.
So for lupe fiasco to be in there is wierd. He got some good songs and a good album. But nobody cares.
Rick Ross and Snoop are high because recent 2008 releases they really the only big sellers. No one sold a lot of records this Spring other than them. And each has about 4 or 5 singles their albums.
Maybe Jim Jones, the Game, Nas could have made the list too?

I was expecting the list to create an outrage among the 2.0 Community but it is nothing compared to you guys!
First of all you should try to understand the mechanics behind such a list. If you want to create something like that, you need at least some kind of criterion. In the case of MTV, it was obviously their decision to make this criterion the relatively vague status that is called “hotness”. After that, they had to decide on the way the list would be put together. A regular Poll on mtv.com would have put the rapper with the biggest buzz or with the nerdiest fans on top of that list (which would have been Wayne, if you ask me). But as this would have only reflected the popularity of an artist and nothing else, they wanted to include a virtual professional comittee to decide over quality and status of each artist.
This is where all of you guys that keep posting new lists come into the picture. Even in a committee the members still have their individual and subjective opinions. If one of them does not like Wayne, he will put him below Jay-Z and Andre in front of Kanye. The only difference is that they have to vote and discuss it and that probably the majority vote decides where the artist will be on that list.
Basically, there is no other way of doing this. Music is an issue way to polarizing to have clear and unbiased decisions.
I understand the controversy that this has caused but I don’t see the point in discussing stuff like “why isn’t Rich Boy on there?” or “I think Jay-Z should be on 8, The Game on 3 and Lil Wayne should be off”.
They made the decision and it is hard to talk people out of their preferences. I would have created a different list myself, but I don’t see the point of posting it here. It’s just not interesting.
What is for certain: MTV sure is the talk of the town for the next few days. Bravo MTV.

MTV has ceased to be a cultural bellwether for music when they stopped showing music.
No disrespect to the panel, but who is actually giving creedence to what these individuals think?
A term like “hottest” is so subjective and based on personal opinion that no one should truly have an argument with this list.
The list reflects the OPINIONS of a roundtable on a former music video channel. It for some reason got a lot of people talking last year, and seems to be doing the same this year.
My solution…do like the NFL does. Pro bowl players (the MTV list) are voted on by writers and fans. All-pros (the real hottest MCs) are voted on by the coaches, and this carries more respect in the game b/c its your peers voting.
Come up with a list of 20-50 MCs, create a ballot, let everyone vote among themselves, then you will have a list of the hottest for real.

This list is the most bullshit i’ v ever seen. MTV and this council is a joke. Viacom must have hand picked half this “MCs”. first off Jay Z’s last two albums have sucked so he should not even be on this list, so what he just did the biggest in rap history, live nation is getting robbed and he stoled Young Chris’s Flow. TI is one of the sickest rappers but he’s not hot right now, and i love 3stack’s and every thing he does so he’s an auto pick for top 10. 50, Kanye, and Wayne top 5 hands down.
Jeezy and Lupe have stepped it up over the past 6 months,albums, mix tapes, remixes and features, so I would put them in my top10 too, A SUPERSTAR ! Snoop, Legendary, but 2 hot singles and a TV show does not make u in the top 10. So that leaves us with the most glaring spots on this list. 1st Rick Ross is not a Hotter MC than 50, shit not even Lloyd Banks, shit barely better than Yayo. His album lackluster and full of weak “ft’s”, I.e. young hov. Maybe to 15, Maybe! And last but dame sure not least, is Joe Buddens! He dropped a “Klasix” in the form of MM3. He finale got off of def jam and Jay became a copy cat and followed suit. And is the only MAN two KILL the self called “GOAT”, and then go on radio and talk shit about it. so why do people think weezy is hotter than jay-z? I don’t get that that is obvious. They are both hot, but anyone that went to Heart of the City tour which was a huge national headlining tour (which weezy didn’t have at that level) would have seen everyone go crazy for jay-z; In chicago, the energy level from Mary J. to when Jay-z came in on the stage increased like 300%, that’s hot, IMO

this is rediculous, i have told anyone that will listen that lil wayne is the MOST IMPROVED RAPPER but the best rapper alive, how? his verse on Barry Bonds was horrible, also his verse on hello brooklyn wasn’t anything to talk about, if you ask me these were moments to let it be known who was who and what was what. like jay said at least keep it consistent. remember we rarely question any verse jay ever spit even on renegade if eminem was better can you honestly say jay didn’t deliver.

damn how can u say rick ross don’t deserve to be number 4??? his album was fire, and look at some of the remix’s he spit on….foolish remix, we out here grindin (dj khalad’s hot new shit), cash flow, i’m so hood remix, and then he put out that speedin remix which was crazy. some of his lyrics might be a lil wack but overall his stuff is tough.

why is andre 3000 on this list he hasnt done anything in 2008 i go to school in the ATL he doesnt have anything on the radio or in the clubs if anythign the number 9 spot should go to GAME BIG DREAMS was a better track then anythign andre has put out in 2008..MTV IS BULLSHIT with this list are they judging actual HOTNESS or is it who they like they needa stick to reality shows and even corny show hosts thats what they do leave rap to the people in the loop

absolute waste to complain about a list like this, then again . . . some of these “rappers” shouldn’t be on a list that has “MC” in its title.
I figured the kiddies would be up in here saying “Jay-Z’s last two records sucked.” Ignorant shit indeed. And, as a recent Bun B convert, I’ll say he should have made it. You just don’t get to hear many southern MCs talking about the differences in funding public school systems as he did on II Trill. You just don’t.

Wow.. Andre 3000 made it? He didnt even have his own track this past year. I hate soulja boy but based on the fact its “Hottest” mc he should had a spot on there instead of andre. Lupe Fiasco at #7 wow!! He should’ve been above weezy behind or infront of jay. This is Hottest mc “Right Now”. Come on, this kid is being compared to NAS! Kanye is bringing back the element of the live performance in a way that The Roots cannot, so G-d bless him for that. I feel like he used to have something to say but now it’s just all about pop culture references and big tits, I feel like he’s abandoned what made him stand out, but that’s what most have to do to become the best in the world. Mission Accomplished!
Jay-z, everyone likes to say that the last two albums were garbage. I’m not of that mind, this man is an artist and his art has evolved. I’m sure he loves Reasonable Doubt, but that’s not where he is as a person. But if you’re someone who loves Reasonable Doubt and hasn’t grown as a person than Kingdom Come is gonna feel weak to you.
I totally agree with referring to Wayne as the most improved rapper, but best in the game, no. He’s lyrical skills appear to be on the decline, but the guy does have a strong buzz and a cult like following.
Rick Ross I understand a bit more than Jeezy, but not that much, anyone who burns money and has breasts and a penis but continues to walk around an pose without his shirt on is vulgar to me. But still they guy does have a little swagger and he can make a decent song.
I think that Snoop is up there because “Sensual Seduction” was a smash, they needed to throw in the west and because white people LOVE THIS MAN. But if it’s about giving the West Coast some shine, it should go to The Game. He’s controversial, he’s lyrical, he’s cerebral and there’s substance to his music.
50, I would say give me a break, but “I get money” was a street/hood/suburban/rural/backyard BBQ/snowman making competition hit and he did a song with Timberlake. Of course doing a song with everyone else’s favorite Whit boy who can sing didn’t help him much (see “Follow my Lead”). And even though CURTIS was pure garbage I give him credit for being able to generate a buzz for T.O.S. and those mixtapes did keep me occupied.
Lupe Fiasco, that’s a hot album Paris/Tokyo is hot Superstar is a smash. In terms of swagger he just doesn’t do it for me. And after the ATCQ hip hop honors debacle and the many interviews that followed, he just comes off as the dork who got to hangout with the cool kids and got gassed.
Jeezy, seriously guys I just don’t get it. I meant some dudes at Huf in SF last year and they were bumpin Jeezy hard and I was thinking this obsession is beyond the East Coast. it’s hard to understand why we’re still captivated by him, he doesn’t say anything, he dissed Nas and was incapable of having an honest conversation with Monie Love. Also, the garbage that was his last album should be evidence enough. He’s all adlibs and cocaine, there’s not depth and there’s no message.
I love T.I., but recently I have come to ponder if I purchased every album that followed Trap Muzic on the strength of Trap Muzic, but I do agree that if he’s gonna be on the list, he needs to be higher than 10.
Andre 3000, he did some cameos in ‘06 and ‘07, he’s one of the most clever and humorous rappers out there. Remember when he was talking about White T’s looking like night gowns. The man is a genius.

As for the current list…3000 had what two verse? Royal Flush and Art of Storytelling 4? Last year I get it, it was huge to hear him on songs you never would have pictured him on, but tossing his name out this year is just to make yourself look “cool”. T.I. on the list for this year…also a nod to the man’s past, it’s not like his Superstar or love in this club remix had the internets going nuts.

Think about it. Jay deserves to be in the top 5 because anytime he does anthing it’s all over the news and the blogs. Same thing with 50, he’s got everyone posting up anytime a new Unit track comes out.
Kanye and Wayne are easy to put at the top.
The Boss gets the nod at five for consistently being talked about staying in heavy TV and radio rotation, and keeping on all those posse cuts and mixtape remixes….like it or not you heard his voice all year even before the album.
Young Jeezy when you look at it has been on so many mixtape remixes over the past year, that even without an album there’s never been a Jeezyless two weeks even.
Lupe – he’s got a strong contingent of loyal fans and he’s done just a bit more than those behind him
Bun B, I’m still scratching my head how he missed out on this list. He’s had a great slew of guest raps on so many different projects. Underground Kingz was still bubbling after the last list, and with the sad passing of Pimp C he’s been put into the forefront and delivered. Plus II Trill is anticipated on top of everything else
Souljah Boy- He gets the nod at 8 for what he’s done, but since no one expects or anticipates anything else from him he can’t be higher. It’s not like the net is buzzing for new soldier boy tracks
And finally Lil Boosie….like it or not he’s had more of a presence on the scene this year than Common or 3 stacks…love him or hate him he definetly has earned his cult following and is emerging into the national scene with each posse cut verse

I think if the list is supposed to be about who’s hot right now? It should be based on the public response to the artists project.
If you put out an album and sell crazy numbers you deserve to be on the list. If your selling mad singles you could get on the list too other than that, Naaaah!!
Everything 50 does gets the whole world talking, No 1 has had the success of an album release that created a frenzy since Get Rich or Die Tryin, Massacre, Curtis was handled badly, but went platinum.
Jay hot too top 4 should be Jay Z the comeback kid, Lil Wayne illest MC on the Mic crazy features, 50 Cent the justin Timberlake joint, Ciara and I get money, representin for Floyd Mayweather. Kanye for creativity period,

I think this list is unfair. If u put a room full of hip hop heads together they’ll most likely pick what’s “hood”, for lack of a better way to put it. The list is pretty much accurate in terms of who’s on there with the exception of Andre 3000 & T.I. They should be replaced with SOULJA BOY, yes I said SOULJA BOY and Nas. I was sooo bumbed that Nas didn’t make the list because “Nigger” is the most anticipated album in hip hop right now imo, but ah well, there’s always next year.

People thinking its best mcs and shit, its the hottest mcs in the game, meaning whos been hot for the last few months and right now. And all I no is how is Rick Ross and Snoop ahead of 50? Since Sept Fif has a mulit plat album, the hottest song of 07 with I Get Money, 3 classic mixtapes that are all over the streets and the net, how many net videos, a website that is killing shit, a group album coming, a street and club anthem with Rider pt. 2, tell me what is Snoop and Ross doing? Each had an album and big single, both didnt sell that much, and thats it, how are they hotter than 50? Can someone please answer that? @westphillykid….well I guess its more accurate to say that both should be on there. Maybe I’ll amend that. I’m not a huge Lupe fan and I’m not a Souljah Boy fan at all…but I can see how Souljah boy is definitely a big hit with fans of a certain age/type. Lupe, on the other hand, seems like more of a critical favorite, which is where media elitism can often play too big of a role. Same with Andre 3000. He’s not hot at all. Certainly not hotter than TI. But Andre is great and talented and refreshing and smart. So thats why he gets a spot from journalists who have a soft spot for him. Myself included.
