Heavy D Passes Away At Age 44, Rest In Peace
Posted by Miss Info under about miss info , not good for hip hop , sigh.... , videos[46] Comments

(Heavy D hangs out with T.I. in Atlanta, just one month before his death)
Sad news, and so sudden. TMZ reports that Heavy D was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles this afternoon and died soon afterwards. There are reports that he was conscious and speaking when paramedics arrived, but that he was suffering from complications from pneumonia. Heavy D was only 44 years old.
If you didn’t grow up during his career’s prime, you missed some of the most fun, most energetic, and lyrically acrobatic hip hop of the golden 90′s in New York City. Hailing from Mount Vernon, Heavy D (born Dwight Arrington Myers) blended elements of West Indian dancehall, soul samples and jazz elements into his music. And most of all, D had the best big man dance moves hip hop has ever seen…and I doubt anyone will ever match them.
Details of his passing are still emerging, but Heavy D had just performed at BET’s Hip Hop Awards last month. (And also had a cameo in the new movie Tower Heist too!)
*sigh*
We will definitely reminisce over you, Waterbed Hev.
UPDATE: TMZ has added more sad details…A friend has said Heavy D had pneumonia, and a law enforcement official said Heavy D collapsed outside of his apartment:
Heavy D had just returned from shopping and walked up some stairs when he began having trouble breathing. Adam Mills, a designer who was in the building and knew Heavy D, found him leaning against a railing and clearly in distress. Adam tells us he cradled Heavy D in his lap as others called 911. Adam says Heavy D was conscious and said to him, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” When paramedics took Heavy D to the hospital he had a pulse. People in the building are saying he died of a heart attack, but we have not been able to confirm that. Law enforcement sources tell us … no foul play was involved and so far they only know the cause of death was “medical.”
Watch Heavy D’s final performance, and some of my favorite favorite beloved Heavy D hits…
“Truthful,” “Don’t Curse,” “Now That We Found Love,” and “Dem No Worry We”
After the jump
Heavy D “Truthful”
This was always one of my favorite Heavy D songs….a more wistful departure from Hev’s party songs, but so on point. The video starred Kim Porter, the future mother of three of Diddy’s kids.
Also, props to StreetEtiquette and Atrak for reminding me that Hev also produced Beanie Sigel’s “Feel It In the Air,” another amazing and similarly introspective track.
Heavy D, along with Kool G Rap, Grand Puba, C.L. Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, and Q-Tip: “Don’t Curse”
Heavy D and the Boyz feat. Aaron Hall “Now That We Found Love”
*Watch the dance moves. Flawless.*
Heavy D could chat with the best of them. Here he’s with Supercat on “Dem No Worry We.”

This was the dude who showed Biggie how to do fat-man-sexy. Hell, he was even in the One More Chance video regulating on the Bed-Stuy stoop. May G-d rest and bless this soldier of light, peacefully.

That New Jack Swing era was something epic…Harlem’s own Teddy Riley really did something special with that…and Heav’ was one of the few non-R&B acts to make as much money off that trend that most. Truly talented dude.

This is very sad. A very talented and good brother gone too soon.
My favorite was always “Blue Funk.”
About 2-3 years ago, he put out a great and under appreciated reggae album called “Vibes.” Check it out if you haven’t already.

REMINDS ME OF HIGH SCHOOL. VISITING MY BROTHER IN DELAWARE, UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE. REMEMBER HE HAD “MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD MUSIC” AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU CAN BUMP HIS MUSIC ANYWHERE FROM THE HOOD TO WHITE FOLKS HOME. JUST SEEING THE VIDEOS ABOVE REMINDS HOW FAST TIME FLIES. BUT WHEN WE LOOK BACK WE FEEL LIKE WE NEVER LEFT. RIP AGAIN. ONE

Completely unexpected.
An extraordinary dancer, multi-faceted performer and triggered a gold rush of hip-hop heavyweights from Mount Vernon, New Ro and Y.O.
I’m so shocked… Listened to his tunes on Spotify at least one a week, just to reminisce. He actually started the Coca-Cola rugby shirt trend off…a part of my childhood fades away, yet again

Not to diminish from his work as a musician, Heavy D was also a great actor. Just a couple of months of ago, he starred on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
a man of many talents. RIP Heavy D.

“And it’s a Heavy D production you bastards!”
the dude was talented all-around. I mean, he sampled Cake, an indie band if there ever was one in 2002, for a Jay-Z record ft. Lenny Kravitz, and that was way before everyone thought it was cool to know who Grizzly Bear is.
R.I.P. Heavy D

Devastating news man! I truly hope that the younger generation will not sleep on his passing like they did with Guru. I don’t mean to whine but it just seems that there’s no respect of Hip Hop’s history anymore. I grew up in the Golden Age yet I still revered Flash, Herc, & all the Legends. A lot of kids now have no idea who Kool G Rap is. Sickens me. But I digress…
Heavy D was one of the 1st cats to ever get major radio play without having to sellout. He made very radio friendly singles but he never catered to the females or the $. He was a true mc who really was a special part of Hip Hop’s Greatest Era.
My personal favorite Heavy D moment… No doubt when cats started sleeping on him for being too “soft” he comes out with “You Can’t See What I Can See” & totally F$%^’s the game up! His skills were never doubted again! EVER! RIP to a true LEGEND!

You gotta blame the Music execs, many radio station. Many radios stations play only what is hot now and forget that the old schools cats are the reason they are here. If it ain’t for Mr. C’s radio dj’s not to many these young cats wont even know how old rap culture really is… IT’S like when I see these young cats trying to dress like we did back in the 80′s and 90′s and act as if it’s new…Altough we were not rocking skinny jeans we did rock straight leg jeans back in the 80′s. I can remember so many 80′s and 90′s rappers but have forgotten the majority of the last decades artist…

Man, gonna truly miss Heavy D. Always enjoyed hearing the “In Living Color” theme song. I also loved Super Cat’s “Dem No Worry We”. My other personal favorite features from Hev were Daddy Freddy’s “Respect Due” and Naughty by Nature’s “Ready for Dem”. Loved it when he got on that dancehall tip.

Heavy D will surely be miss! I recently was thinking about his album “Peaceful Journey” This album was dedicated to Trouble T Roy when he died. He was so dam talented and left us at a very young age. “I can still see you dancing kid we love you Peace” (In my Heavy D voice). Love you my brother!
