Happy Birthday Biggie: comedian David Cross doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about…

(Tobias Fünke, left, Michael Bluth, right, in “Arrested Development.” Pic via IGN)
This is hard for me to say because I loved the short-lived TV show “Arrested Development” so much (so so much)….but after reading David Cross’ flippant statement in this interview with serially-sididdy Pitchfork (via less-sididdy Vulture)….I kind of don’t like him anymore. Hopefully that’s just specific to Cross in relation to music of any kind. It shouldn’t really cross over to my feelings for Cross, the odd comedic actor. Plus, I know everyone has different opinions. And I’m definitely guilty of not being wild about someone that other folks think is the bees knees (i.e. Lupe *shrug*). But, I’m human, and hyper-sensitive about the late great Frank White. (Happy Birthday Biggie, R.I.P.!) So I can’t promise fairness. Also, I hate over-analytical music-snob types as a species.
Pitchfork: Do you remember any examples of not liking an album everyone else did?
David Cross: I can’t think of one off the top of my head, although I do think Biggie Smalls is overrated. I just don’t think he’s as good a lyricist as people say he is.
Pitchfork: You’d prefer a Jay-Z maybe?
DC: Yes. I love a good Jay-Z. I love a Kanye, I love a Lupe Fiasco.
psssh tosh! That’s moronic.
For now, you’re dead to me, Cross….
but Tobias Fünke lives on…FOREVER…after the jump…

Well, he’s not REALLY reaching. People do tend to overrate big alot. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan but lyrically he wasn’t the best..

I kinda agree though. He has two albums (I dont consider ‘Born Again’ his album) and thats it.
I wouldn’t go as far as saying overrated but his death sure has hell made him a legend over night.
However, Biggie is the king when it comes to flows though. He rode the beat like it was his bitch. His swagger is unparalleled.
Always thought Pac had more depth lyrically, but whatever..I dont want to get lynched in BK for saying that.
ps. people calling it blasphemy are just stans.

BIG was hot, i always checked for his music, but I certainly dont think he was the best in that time and era.
YO INFO!!!! I dont know if you ever saw this video, or when it came out on the other site but this SHIT IS CLASSIC!!!!! I never saw it since it first came out and was shocked to have found it.

Really Info??
As someone who works in the music/journalism industry you should be accustomed to the subjective nature of opinions and tastes that run the gamut. Especially with an artist who evokes as much passion in his fans/detractors as Biggie.
I myself am a huge fan of the late great Christopher Wallace. But your knee-jerk reaction to someone else simply saying they think he’s “overrated” is a little “extra.” David Cross “doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about”?? He stated his opinion, even though I don’t agree with I can respect it as his own and keep it moving.

The answer is ‘no’.
It was only because of the whole (bullshit) beef that BIG got raised to superstardom status.
Pac was way more lyrical, way more emotional, way more entertaining, and his music content spanned across a wide range of topics which made his music heartfelt.
All Biggie rapped about was food.

I think people who say Biggie wasn’t good lyrically kinda grade him on the Illmatic curve. Compared to that, who could get shine? I did think he was overrated though, that may have been my biggie-went-platinum-quick-and-nas-and-wu-took-forever resentment. He was overrated but overrated in the way that people say kobe’s better than Jordan not the “every white guy with skill is the next larry bird” kinda way.
He still bit off of Live and Let Die by G. Rap tho. FACT!

hahaha, I thought he was going to say something super rude/disrespectful. I mean, growin up out here on the west, and being in 8th grade during the “bad boy/death row” nonsense, not going to front, I shunned biggie, and his stuff didn’t really grow on me (n/h) until college, where i started to appreciate his lyricism.

Biggie isnt even in the argument of GOAT’s. To be a GOAT you need AT LEAST 3 classic albums. He has one classic. I agree with Cross- hes right on the money. I know amongst hip hop heads that seen as blasphemous cuz every one wants to be PC but hes completely right.

Honestly, BIG was dope and definitely helped spawn more talented artists but I wouldn’t put him in my top 10 best lyricists of all time. Probably not even in my top 20. Lupe is entirely more talented/lyrical than Biggie ever was. If Lupe was around in Biggie’s time, we all would probably consider him one of the greatest. I think Cross was dead on. Sorry, Info, but I lost a lil’ respect for you w/ this post. =/

I thought I was the only one who wasn’t a big Lupe fan?
On the subject of Biggie, you can’t like Jay-Z and not like Biggie, I wanna stress that first of all.
Secondly, if you’re gonna say that man wasn’t lyrical and a MASTER wordsmith you’re gonna have to give me some examples of something better. Life After Death is 13 years old and you could play it right now for some brat not in the know and they’ll think it was recorded last week. The man’s art is TIMELESS. You can’t give me too many examples of someone who knocks like that.
I know that it’s sometimes fashionable to go against the grain, so to speak, or try to throw shade on something that appeals to the masses instead of opening your eyes and recognizing the talent and gift behind someone that can unite so many people. But to downplay Big’s skills is just retarded. I can understand if he’s not your favorite, I can even understand if he’s better than your favorite but just not your flavor, but you can’t deny the man’s skills.
I hated the Bulls growing up, was not a big Jordan fan, but denying that he was the GOAT is just hate and/or stupidity.

Name three jay-z albums where he didnt take bigs shit. #I’llwait Name one rapper out after biggie’s death who hasnt recited or sampled a couple bars. I agree that everyone has a opinion, but lupe? to be the greatest you have to have how many albums again? and Lupe has how many albums? its cool to have your own opinion, but when there’s no logic..*blank stare* B.I.G wasnt lyrical? he had so many styles of rap. who really thought that big could flow on some bone thugs ish? he was a story teller, crushed club bangers. He didnt make you think? your nobody till somebody kills you? I could go on and on but there’s really no sense in doing that when conversing with someone who is obviously insane…I feel like im really starting to see first hand why hip hop is in the state that its in…and its all in slow motion, like im in a dream ctfu.

exhibit A:
“sky’s the limit”
Uhhh
A nigga never been as broke as me, I like that
When I was young I had two pair of Lees, besides that
The pin stripes and the gray (uh-huh)
The one I wore on Mondays and Wednesdays
While niggas flirt, I’m sewing tigers on my shirt
and alligators
Ya wanna see the inside, huh, I see ya later
Here come the drama, oh, that’s that nigga wit the fake, blaow!
Why you punch me in my face, stay in ya place
Play ya position, here come my intuition
Go in this nigga pocket
Rob him while his friends watchin
That hoes clockin, here comes respect
His crew’s your crew, or they might be next
Look at they man eye, BIG man they never try
So we roll wid em, stole wid em
I mean loyalty, niggaz bought me milks at lunch
The milks was chocolate, the cookies, buttercrunch
In gear – Oshkosh with blue and white ducks
Pass the blunt.
“sky’s the limit” by b.i.g, “child’s play” by ghostface, “stan” by eminem “dear mama” by tupac, “teenage love” by slick rick, etc…
i guess one may claim that “momma loves me” by jay z is in this category, but i would have to disagree. in it, jay z is revealing his emotions, but he isn’t doing so with the exposed beauty of a “sky’s the limit” or “dear mama”. jay z has never exposed himself emotionally.
these songs are the epitome of “real” hip hop, not that bullshit macho shit.
exhibit B:
“suicidal thoughts”
When I die, fuck it I wanna go to hell
Cause I’m a piece of shit, it ain’t hard to fuckin’ tell
It don’t make sense, goin’ to heaven wit the goodie-goodies
Dressed in white, I like black Tims and black hoodies
God will probably have me on some real strict shit
No sleepin’ all day, no gettin my dick licked
Hangin’ with the goodie-goodies loungin’ in paradise
Fuck that shit, I wanna tote guns and shoot dice
All my life I been considered as the worst
Lyin’ to my mother, even stealin’ out her purse
Crime after crime, from drugs to extortion
I know my mother wished she got a fuckin’ abortion
She don’t even love me like she did when I was younger
Suckin’ on her chest just to stop my fuckin’ hunger
I wonder if I died, would tears come to her eyes?
Forgive me for my disrespect, forgive me for my lies
My babies’ mothers 8 months, her little sister’s 2
Who’s to blame for both of them (naw nigga, not you)
I swear to God I just want to slit my wrists and end this bullshit
Throw the Magnum to my head, threaten to pull shit
And squeeze, until the bed’s, completely red
I’m glad I’m dead, a worthless fuckin’ buddah head
The stress is buildin’ up, I can’t,
I can’t believe suicide’s on my fuckin’ mind
I want to leave, I swear to God I feel like death is fuckin’ callin’ me
Naw you wouldn’t understand (nigga, talk to me please)
You see its kinda like the crack did to Pookie, in New Jack
Except when I cross over, there ain’t no comin’ back
Should I die on the train track, like Remo in Beatstreet
People at the funeral frontin’ like they miss me
My baby momma kissed me but she glad I’m gone
She knew me and her sista had somethin’ goin’ on
I reach my peak, I can’t speak,
call my nigga Chic, tell him that my will is weak.
I’m sick of niggas lyin’, I’m sick of bitches hawkin’,
matter of fact, I’m sick of talkin’.
(BANG)
(hey yo big…hey yo big)
damn…. i rest my fucking case.
i mean, this whole verse is as good as salinger’s writing in “catcher in the rye”.
i often wonder what the “notorious one’s” I.Q. was and i usually come up with pretty fuckin high, probably–technically–genius level: 130 and above.
imo, no rap lyricist has ever matched B.I.G’s lyrical wit and construction. simply put, he’s my number 1–hands down.
but i could never hate D. cross. he’s too damn funny!

Biggie was a great rapper but lyrically was fairly average. same old repetitive gangster talk and then had the nerve to talk about nas jacking his mafioso raps when he himself took that off g rap.

Deltron 3030 is one of my favortie albums of all time, of any musical genre… It’s up there with Darkside of the Moon on my list of all time greats, so you know that’s saying something!
He used to ghostwrite for his older cousin “Ice Cube” before he started out on his own. He also was down w the legendary Hieroglyphics crew.
He certainly has “fallen off” as of late, but in his prime, he flipped sh*t.

Music is subjective. So much of it is dependent on your perspective. Your environment, the era you grew up in. If the music impacted your life, etc.
If I was around (especially if I was in NY) to see Biggie at his peak, I would totally think he was the best.
But I wasn’t, so I can only judge him on his lyrical ability. And solely based off that, I think it’s fair to say he’s overrated by certain people.
I think Biggie is (arguably) the GOAT, but not because he’s the most lyrical ever (he’s not).
For “over-analytical rap nerds” they don’t experience any of the real culture surrounding rap first-hand. So they look at it purely technically (they only way they can). That’s why they tend to like Lupe. As a technical MC, he’s incredible. Is that wrong or skewed? I don’t think so. It just is what it is.

Biggie left such an impression in rap game as a whole that only two albums later 13 years later after his death he is still in the top three list. Nas was before him but after BIG came out the gAme changed he brought pride to the east coast, Brooklyn, NYC when west coast was running the show. It wasn’t nas who rescued the east and he could have but he didn’t he stayed dormant. Can’t nobody say it was diddy it was Biggie Smalls catchy flows, wordplay, sinister story telling that made him better than the rest. Once Notorious first album they knew things done changed, they new u had to better or close to it. Big had that Freddy Kruger, Jason, Michael myers Killa shit.

Although they were the same age, Jay-Z is almost from an era after BIG. He really built and innovated upon many of BIG’s concepts…
Jordan had to happen for Kobe to exist…but at the same time, that doesn’t mean Jordan is automatically better because he’s the blueprint/prototype. (I think Jordan is, but it’s fairly debatable)

Fuck your opinions. Big was and is the God-MC. Perfect diction. Clear and strong lyrics. Possibly best story-teller ever. Some of his songs were like gangster movie screenplays. I’m not saying he was the most lyrical but he epitomized everything the MC should be. I would go crazy posted some of his lyrics but then I might get banned. Fuck it.

Fillin clips he explained our situation
Precisely, so we know exactly what we facin
Some kid named Jason
In a Honda station wagon
Was braggin
About how much loot and crack he stackin
Rock had a grip so they formed up a clique
Small crew
‘Round the time I was locked up with you
True indeed
But yo nigga let me proceed
Don’t fill them clips too high
Give them bullets room to breathe
Damn where was I?
Yeah
One night in town
Blew the fuck up
D-Rock went home
And Jay got stuck the fuck up
Hit ‘em twice
Got ‘em right for the virgin white
Pistol whipped his kids
And taped up his wife
He said “Yo Rock, set em up”, no question
Wet em up no less
Than 50 shots in his direction
How many shots?
Man nigga, I seen mad holes
What kinda gats?
Heckler & Koch and Calicoles
But fuck that
I know where all them niggas rest at
In the buildin hustlin
And they don’t be strapped
Supreme in black
Is downstairs, the engine runnin
Find a bag to put the guns in
And c’mon if yo comin

Who today is spitting anything even half as good as this? And remember Big was only 24!!
Since it’s on, I call my nigga Arizona Ron
From Tuscon, pushed the black Yukon
Usually had the slow grooves on, mostly rock the Isley
Stupid as a young’un, chose not the moves wisely
Sharper with game, him and his crooks, called The Juxs
Heard it was sweet, bout three-fifty a piece
Ron bought a truck, two bricks laid in the cut
His peeps got bucked, got locked the fuck up
That’s when Ron vanished, came back, speakin Spanish
Lavish habits, two rings, twenty carats
Here’s a criminal, nigga made America’s Most
Killed his baby mother brother, slit his throat
The nigga got bagged with the toast
Weeded, took it to trial, beat it
Now he feel he undefeated, he mean it
Nothing to lose, tattooed around his gun wounds
Everything to gain, embedded in his brain
And me I feel the same for this money and diamonds
Specially if my daughter cryin, I ain’t lyin
Y’all know the science

Yo, the bitch push a double-oh

Y’all drive in front, I’m a peel with her
Find a deal with her, she fuck around and steal, huh?
Then we all get laced
Television’s, Versacci heaven, when I’m up in em
The shit she kicked, all the shit’s legit
She get dick from a player off the New York Knicks
Nigga tricked ridiculous, the shit was plush
She’s stressin me to fuck, like she was in a rush
We fucked in his bed, quite dangerous
I’m in his ass while he playin gainst the Utah Jazz
My 112, CD blast, I was past
She came twice I came last, roll the grass
She giggle, say I don’t smoke it on homegrown
Then I heard her moan, honey I’m home
Yep, tote chrome for situations like this
I’m up in his broad I know he won’t like this
Now I’m like bitch you better talk to him
Before this fist put a spark to him
Fuck around shit get dark to him, put a part through him
Lose a major part to him, arm, leg
She beggin me to stop but this cat gettin closer
Gettin hot like a toaster, I cocks the toast, uhh
Before my eyes could blink
She screams out, “Honey bring me up somethin to drink!”
He go back downstairs more time to think
Her brain racin, she’s tellin me to stay patient
She don’t know I’m, cool as a fan
Gat in hand, I don’t wanna blast her man
But I can and I will doe, I probably chill doe
Even though situation lookin kinda ill yo
It came to me like a song I wrote
Told the bitch gimme your scarf, pillowcase and rope
Got dressed quick, tied the scarf around my face
Roped the bitch up, gagged her mouth with the pillowcase
Play the cut, nigga comin off some love potion shit
Flash the heat on em, he stood emotionless
Dropped the glass screamin, “Don’t blast here’s the stash,
a hundred cash just don’t shoot my ass, please!”
Nigga pullin mad G’s out the floor
Put stacks in a Prater knapsack, hit the door
Grab the keys to the five, call my niggaz on the cell
Bring some weed I got a story to tell, uhh…

I’m sorry Miss Info. I had to do that for the kids who obviously know nothing of Big and have grown up in the age of Jeezy, Drake and Wayne. While I have nothing against those rappers and actually enjoy their music it’s funny to hear that Big was overrated when the quality of the music is where it is at today.

I grew up through the NWA era, but Biggie is mad overrated. You can’t be the best off two albums. Two albums which if you remember were spearheaded and marketed by Diddy. I remember Diddy back in 94/95 talking to MTV about the direction he had to force Biggie to take for Life after Death. I remember how Biggie said he didn’t want to make “Big Poppa.”
Essentially, Diddy made Biggie because Frank White would have never truly materialized without him.

Biggie is overrated although he was a dope lyricist. He can’t be the GOAT because he doesn’t have the track record but of course he didn’t have control over it…life did. You can’t be the GOAT off of 2 albums.

I agree Biggie was incredible and NY should stand up for him but I’m from Chi and a real Hip Hop fan so I’m really trippin on the Lupe diss from the writer. Don’t front, Lupe is another one of those great emcee’s/lyricist

Big is ill, but he’s probably the most overrated rapper of all time. Most of his “achievements” can be directly credited to Diddy.

Biggie overrated …LMAO! Whatever yall quick to give Jay-z the crown. When the world didn’t know Jay didn’t write down his lyrics. Biggie was the only person that kept up with him.Without writing his lyrics down either.Anyone remember “Brooklyn Finest” or “I Love for the dough:”? Those was straight off the top of the dome. But everybody and there mother wanna call Jay “Rain Man” and shit.
Biggie not overrated it is not Biggie fault that the hip hop community ride his dick after his death. So don’t start disrespecting this man cause the media and Diddy turned this man in to a dead icon.
I think Pac was a better poet at heart. Cause of the struggles he faced. But nobody says he overrated cause everybody to this day dicks rides too. So don’t do it to Biggie. It one thing to have an opinion but don’t disrespect this man catalog. Just cause you are not a fan or you couldn’t relate to his lyrics.
The nerve of yall to say these things when yall probably think Wayne is really the “Best Rapper Alive”. That is hard to believe when he cloned Jay-z whole fucking flow for the last 5 years.Don’t get me wrong Wayne is nice with his shit. But i won’t hear this blasphemy about Frank White.Kanye is a great artist also but his samples classic songs like Diddy did when bad boy was running shit back in the days.If yall going to disrespect Biggie start doing it to all the rappers out there.
Jesus what next? Yall are going to say Gucci deserve to be lyricist of the year!?
I can’t believe this shit at all. It took like a decade and a half to start this debate. The problem behind that is this shouldn’t be a damn debate. Respect Biggie for his two classic album and leave it alone. Just cause the lyrics to some of you i must say hip hop virgins don’t appeal to you. Don’t mean you shouldn’t respect the past.
And No i ain’t 30 plus year old rap head that still listen to cassette tapes. I just know it certain things you say and don’t and this is one of them
Long Live Frank White!

Let me ask this question. If Sean combs made Biggie, then why hasn’t he been able to recreate someone even close to that stature. He had Kiss and did nothing with him. Whatever happened to Aasim or whatever the fuck his name was? Sean didn’t write his fucking rhymes. I’m not saying Big is the Goat. I think Em has surpassed him lyrically as well as a host of other MC’s. I would hope so being that he died 13 fucking years ago. The game has changed and evolved but he is still easily one of the best who ever did it. And his two albums are arguably among the best Hip Hop albums ever.

Miss Info to Chris:
“Hire this man!” (Steinbrenner voice)
I’m down 100%…That’s what people who didn’t actually listen to Biggie when he was alive don’t know…The dude was considered a walking talking legend back then! Plain and simple…his death just amplified and martyred his status.
