GoldLink, a 20-year-old rapper from DMV, has been building a fierce buzz outside of the traditional rap sphere these past few months, and today he’s dropped his highly anticipated debut project, The God Complex. The DMV area isn’t exactly synonymous with forward-thinking rap like, say, Chicago or Atlanta, but GoldLink breathes an entirely new sound into the scene — one he calls “Future Bounce.”

The premise: blending bass-heavy, house-inspired beats — which trace its roots back to DMV’s go-go scene — with intricate rhymes and melodic deliveries. Over its nine tracks, The God Complex will take you on a roller coaster ride of vibes, emotions and even genres. There’s the uptempo party banger “Planet Paradise”; the grimy boom bap cut “Hip-Hop (Interlude)”; and the intoxicatingly mellow “When I Die,” which is the perfect come down to this thrilling journey.

Without a single proper photo of him online (he didn’t even make an appearance in his first music video), GoldLink is only interested in putting his talent first — and it shows.
