Fuzzy Math: Jermaine Dupri says “The DJ is Dead”
Posted by Miss Info under beef , hmmm....? , not good for hip hop , quotes , videos[24] Comments
Hmm…someone wants in on the action, eh? Well, on the heels of Lil Wayne’s misdirected generalization, Jermaine Dupri is volunteering his opinion and making sure to speak in bold objectionable sweeping terms to get your attention. Its working!
sigh.
UPDATE: reader Kenny Kaine pointed out that he saw this video weeks before Weezy-Gate, so its inaccurate to describe this as “on the heels.” Its on the toes if anything, lol. Thank you for the correction!

What the hell is wrong with this man? I think he has an aversion to evolution. Does anyone remember when he went on the tirade about digital downloads? Homey needs to get with the program. As long as the mind stays open to change and the dollar does not totally crash, there is room for everyone to make money and pursue a new agenda in this business. His head must be in the sand. Also, anyone who had anything to do with the debacle that is “Here I Stand” needn’t talk till December. I think the man is losing his grip with reality and what people want.

i think the djs now a days try to get too much props for playing songs.i give props to a dj who makes beats or plays hot songs in a club but how much props you wanna get for playing a song??? thats like giveing the guy that works at HBO props for playing the movies on that station.they are music programers not dj..and mix tape djs are nothing but bootlegers unless your a up and coming rapper.but after that.they will bootleg your stuff after you get famous.mix tape djs throw songs on a cd and sells them anyone can do that.a real dj>makes beats, enter in contest,is in the forefront of mc battles, plays hot songs at clubs, plays the beats on time when a rapper is on tour..not>>bootlegging your stuff>>playing south songs million time a day on the radio>>throwing songs together on a cd and selling them..anyone can press play. but jd is rite.the music gos from his hand to their hand not the other way around enless he knows a hot rapper.they need to play their part.

The game been messed up for a while on many different levels and money seems to be a big part of that .

Info, he ain’t lyin.
The DJ is dead. We have a bunch of dudes who want all the shine and all the money.
There was a time where you would make a record and send the record to the DJ’s and they would be happy to get good music and play it. Good music was what they lived for.
Now, we have a bunch of dudes who have been DJ’ing for so long that they don’t care about good music. These cats have been dj’ing for a decade. They got kids now. They got mortgages to pay. Multiple car payments. Employees. Their focus is all about the money. They don’t care about your music, they are looking for a stack (or ten+ in the case of certain NY radio station personalities). And lets not talk about the other cities like Atlanta which is all about money. Every one of those fucking dj’s, from mixtapes to the radio, is dirty.
The whole relationship has changed. Records aren’t being broken unless some backs have been scratched. Either they want money, or you are paying in verses for their own album coming out on Koch.
And on top of that they are selling your music through mix tapes. In some (most) cases they will make more from the sale of the music than the artist. Or they are just plain giving it away online. That scenario has gone past the point of helping and is now, as JD said, it’s going the other way. It’s hurting.
The DJ game is fucked up Info. There’s no denying it.

Word. He’s valid in every sense of how the DJ has morphed into a present day “WTF”…Why blame the DJ if he can’t be acknowldeged…Many of today’s artist fail to recognize their road DJs…at least have the DJ in a photo-op…shout out to Kanye for recognizing A-Track…other than that the DJ is obsolete in this world we now call hip-hop. Bring it back. DJs also need to have their game str8…spin muthafuckin records…half DJs these days are not on point with their mathematics (turntables)…the robots (Serato) is the DJ…follow me.

Although I can’t totally agree with anyone who talks while they’re almost lying down I do have to agree with him and that DJs nowadays want to be out there making music themselves as opposed to just breaking new songs and making blends. I equate it to the argument Suge Knight made about Puffy being on everyone’s records he was producing, people want to be in the spotlight, something that could also actually be said about JD himself.

3 Reasons Why We Shouldn’t Listen To JD:
1. He says weird things like, “…Still, I think J-Kwon is going to help rap get its heart back.”
2. He says other weird things like “Man, finally a New York cat that figured it out.” in reference to Mims and “This is Why I’m Hot”
3. He signed Rocko.
“The Emancipation of MiMi” was solid though.

nonsense. in the truest form, he has no sense to his logic. and this individual is a label head? no wonder the hip-hop specifically and the record industry generally is hurting. we’ve got an uncreative swagger jacker (see his jacks of Diddy, Kanye, Da Brat, Kriss Kross, etc.) making decisions. JD is a privileged child who does not understand hip-hop anymore. thanks info for an exposing unintelligent opportunist who wants so hard to be on the bandwagon.

I’d never say “fuck the dj” BUT, DJ’s are a dime a dozen now. I personally know (not famous, but equally as good) DJ’s who have been spinning since the late 80’s early 90’s easily making GOOD cream.
Now they are undercut by anyone who has a hard drive, Serato, and just copies Hot97.com’s or Power105’s playlist.
Now you have rappers becoming DJ’s, and essentially taking the jobs that many DJ’s (not famous, but equally as good) who have put in work for many years, to hold.
If you aren’t Funk Master Flex, Enuff, Camillo, or any established mixtape DJ on MAJOR radio (terrestrial or satellite or TV) it’s pointless to get in the game – UNLESS you are going to change it.
A rich family member helps too…yunno..connections.
JD makes a point at first, but winds up just babbling in the end.

I kinda understand and agree with what Jermaine Dupri is saying. What it is that in these days and times the role of the DJ has transformed into something else,in a sense. The DJ was a means introducing new acts to the masses. No strings attached. Now,the DJ of today sees these artists they help becoming big stars and want in on the payday. They view themselves as the tastemakers of what’s hot and who’s not. So they,in turn, feel they should be well rewarded for their input and hard work. Those people follow the model that was successfully set prior to them. DJ Clue and Fabolous. KaySlay and Papoose. The DJ of today looks at this and feels they need to be more pro active in marketing and production. Now here’s where it gets tricky…just because you know a hot joint when you hear it,doesn’t mean you can make hot joints yourself. Having an ear is one thing. But even those whom make the music have others to bounce ideas off of. No one is that self contained and egotistical. Not even Kanye West. In that case, what it is,his belief in himself is matched by his drive, determination, and countless hours trying to outdo himself. It’s his execution that seperates himself from others. Most DJs can’t remove themselves far enough from what they love to be objective. They’ve become somewhat selfish. They feel they can do a better job that the artists themselves and so they spend ample time,if not more, marketing themselves first. This is where JD states that the DJ is dead. It’s not about helping others. It’s about helping themselves and in the process help others. Kinda counter productive,in a sense.

@tyron….hahaha, wow, are you serious? Are all those quotes real? its like a comedy of errors!
@kenny kaine….interesting, this pre-dates Weezy-gate!? good catch….then I’m wrong to lump JD in as a publicity chaser….but, then again…even if he isnt in this instance…lol
@Harosa!!! HAHAHAA I TOTALLY agree….I hate when people talk while lying down! You know when you call someone and they’re lying down and you can totally hear it in their voice….and you want to scream, get the F up, you lazy buffoon! lol…or maybe thats just me : )

Besides the fact of the promotion side of being a DJ, I think the art is being faltered right now. At first, I didn’t understood Kay Slay’s RAGE against Serato and other PCDJ programs. Now I get it.
I finally started messing with the programs.. I can beatmatch by just pressing some buttons? REALLY? I dont even need to try to use it. I’m not DJ, but I respect the art, the effort, and the talent involved. When you have young female socialites with a MacBook plastered with Dim Mak stickers spinning Coolio in some LAcoke club, something is seriously wrong.

Real indeed. The J-Kwon quote is from the June 2004 issue of XXL. The Mims quote is from the May 2007 issue of XXL.

JD is basically sayin, Dj’s r tryin to be bigger than the artists, which is true.
The Dj that leaked Carter III did it as F! U! to Wayne coz he feels Wayne needs him more than he needs Wayne which is stupid coz every artist knows not to give the said Dj exclusive material based on the Weezy saga.
Nas accused Flex of doing the same thing. Taking money to play records e.t.c when Dj’s are suppoded to be the hip-hop street team like Dj Green Lantern was to Eminem. Whoo Kid to G-Unit e.t.c
Dj’s on radio these days instigate beef and take sides which F’s up the game to an extent You know Kay Slay won’t play certain records there are few old school dj’s who do what is supposed to be done which is promote and give the artist opportunity to clarify what the streets want to know e.g Ed Lover.
But I still like the mixtape game, Dj Khaled album was big. I still play joints off the album till 2 day.

@Blu Payola still goes on . Lest say Iam DJ Bon1bon I work at a hip hop radio station I cant out right get money to play a record on the air but if I have a record pool or promotion company you can pay the company to get your record “promoted” So it would be in my best intrest to make sure the people that are paying my “promotion” company to get there song on the hip hop radio stations to play their song .Or get them to host your event(s) and pay them “extra”

yea i agree the dj trys to be bigger than the artist. id say everyone in hip hop takes a vote to get these djs out of the radio stations.how much luv they wanna get for playing songs??? for pressing play??.plus they killed hip hop by downloading dudes singles and playing wack songs ova and ova and ova.people say its the south or pop music or this and dat that killed hip hop no! its the mother fuc*ing djs cause they the ones playing that shiit they the ones that play it that make us hear it.of couse theirs wack rappers theirs allways gonna be wack rappers but by them playing it for everyone to hear its their fault.them djs feel salty cause they around rich rappers and they cant get a peace of the pie.i give luv to djs who make beats come up with hooks and play real hip hop but these other dudes killed hip hop son. tell you the truth only dj on hot 97 that plays real hip hop is that ni*ga peter rosenburg.and you can tell he does it for the love.you dont see cats that work for the showtime channel trying to get xtra props for playing they movies.im saying.

Well, she is well known for doing what she does now, and since I have yet to hear a session by her (and she recently accepted my friend request), I will leave her out of it. But the daughter of some Fortune 500 company or the Olson Twins or Lohan are not DJ’s. Why don’t they go continually fail at something like acting.
