Funkmaster flex speaks on the Beanie Sigel vs. Jay-Z
Funkmaster Flex - Beanie Sigel vs. Jay-Z.mp3
Mikey: Last night, on Hot 97 Funkmaster Flex spoke on the Beanie Sigel vs. Jay-Z situation, and voiced his personal opinions on the matter. As someone who’s been around Rocafella since it was just ”Hov and Dame in the Lexus”, he’s got interesting perspective here. Flex also talks about Jaz-O’s and Dame’s issues with Jay. (props to Nahright via RR)
“I feel like Jay-Z was wrong but wrong for a different reason. I think Jay was wrong for not letting Sigel out the contract because once an artist tells you he’s upset or tells you he wants to leave, I think you should let him leave. It’s a situation beyond repair.”
“I think Beans was wrong for making a record saying anything about Jay-Z… but I don’t know what happened in Philly…”

November 10th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Since when do you let someone out of a contract becuse their upset. It’s called the record BUSINESS! You can’t sign a contract with a label and expect them to let you go when you want them to. Before you sign anything get you a good lawyer, or better yet start your OWN company.

I appreciate Flex honesty. I don’t think Beans was wrong for making that track. If his claims for not getting a hold a Ye-Z are true then it makes sense. Ye-Z didn’t have to call the police, they were already there Flex. All Ye-Z had to do was point them in the direction of Beans (lol).

FLEX IS FUCKING GAY!! TELLING JAZ-O THE NIGGA WHO NAMED JAY-Z TO BE NICE AND NOT SPEAK HIS TRUTH OR ROC THE BOAT IS FUCKING GAY… JAZ-O HAS THE RIGHT TO SPEAK HIS MIND!!! WHO INTRODUCED JAY-Z TO KANE? AND HIS FLOW AT THE TIME? Naz, Biggie and NWA were the first in the 90’s to take that Rakim, G-Rap flavor to the next era and well while JAZ-O-jr was still doing his best Das Effects act! Jaz-O-Jr was an Avg late 80’s early 90’s rapper at best go back and listen to that shit.. Nas has been Nas since album one! Jaz-O-jr has been everyone he thought he had to be in order to be successful…SORRY BUT WHO IS JAY-Z??? HE’S NOT THE GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME… HE’S NOT THE MOST INFLUENTIAL OF HIS ERA….HE’S NOT THE BEST RAPPER OF HIS EAR…. HE’S NOT THE MOST SUCCESSFUL RAPPER OF HIS ERA EVEN THOUGH HE MADE ALOT OF MONEY…..WHY THE FUCK DOES PEOPLE FEEL THE NEED TO PROTECT HIM LIKE HE’S SOME NATIONAL TREASURE?? NOW ITS BEYONCE TURN TO SPEAK ON HIS GREATNESS!! SON JUST THE FIRST DUDE WILLING TO COMPLETELY SELL THE INTEGRITY OF THE CULTURE AND THE MUSIC TO CORPORATE AMERICA FOR STATUS!! HE’S A FUCKING SELLOUT!! WE NEED TO REVISIT ICE CUBES BE TRUE TO THE GAME!
SON IS A FRAUD!!!
I really do got love flex went to his car show two times.. I respect the mans hustle…But he just needs to shut the fuck up before going on air sounding like a chump!! “Jaz-O my dude be nice to hov your a good man just let it go” WTF!!

I disagree with flex on the strength that JAY-Z STARTED THIS.
Like, I really cant say that enough.
Beans would not be saying this if Jay-z would not have been taking shots at all of them on BP3.
They have a right to say how they feel after Jay-z threw them under the bus. Bottom line.
They dont owe Jayz nothing if he disrespecting them flat out.
It’s funny to me how no one brings that up.

I will say that I agree with Flex stating that Jay should have let Beans leave the label…I don’t know what it is with these hiphop labels and their air tight contracts where artists can’t leave…I guess this shows when artists don’t have their legal game up to standards…why sign something that does not allow you to leave…
On another note…too many hiphop labels refuse to negotitate something where the artists can leave and the old label still gets paid…I don’t know if it’s ego where they feel because I brought u in the game so I am the only one who should eat off you…
Also I do agree that alot of artist want to jump ship to the hot labels but that can be two fold..either their labels don’t put any energy into making them better artists or either these rappers don’t put in enough game to be as hot as they can…

Another Flex rambling moment…
It feels like he wants to go in but he doesn’t want it misconstrued as disrespect. Come on out and say it.
“Don’t get confused and think people care about you. They care about the person you’re talking about.”
Translation: Beanie, 50 is not your friend. Go ask J-Hood or Rick Ross’ wife (Did that book come out?). You’re biting the hand that feeds/fed you and probably would have looked out for you in the future. In 14 and a half minutes no one will care that this beef happened and you’ll be worse than when it started. Jay will still be on the cover of Rolling Stone and 50 will have moved on to the next venture. Why is it so hard for artists to see this?

Flex does need to do some real research before he goes on the air and gives his opinion on any topic. If he decides that is too much then he should just Spin records because people will continue to show frustration when you speak about things and dont know much about that of which you speak of.

@ Cambury is you serious??? It’s Flex’s Opinion, if you missed the part where he says he’s speaking as a Fan of the Game & those individuals involved in this mess.
Research for What? Do you do research every time you have to speak on how a situation affects you? Wait you did your research when 9/11 hit or when Kanye Stormed the stage at the VMA just to be sure if you were moved by the moment? (Ok fall back, I know this ain’t on that 9/11 level but you get my drift)
Flex is official title is a DJ/Radio Personality/host…when did his title become REPORTER/new Anchor? Yiou making it sound he’s giving you misleading facts. When was the last time you heard a newscast that give you NEWS then ask you to call/Text to give your opinion? …huh, Listen B, The man is highly capable of speaking his mind on this matter bc he was there from the Jump, he saw the rise & fall of the ROC,…and guess what, he had front row seats too. He’s keeping it 100…knew off these Cats way before the world knew them.
If you don’t like his opinion, formulate your own; find an audience that will care to listen to it…until then “Off That”

You’re right its not arguable!!
Everything he’s done has been largely influenced by Nas! And if you really look at the culture of Eminem for the last 12yrs there has been single-handedly no rapper to impact and change the culture like him.. He took lost young rock fans and made them hip hop fans thats not even debatable! Jay-Z didnt change the culture he just blended in and made corporate sponsorships the foundation of his approach.. Its not that rappers weren’t doing movies or having mainstream appeal before him!
But if you don’t respect that the biggest name in hip hop since 1993 has been Dr. Dre he has giving the industry MEGA STARS and is the most powerful brand in hip hop!!

if nas been largely influencial to everything jay been doing (according to your post) then why isnt nas even close to what jay have done or is doing?
its like it kills u guys to give the man his props.
i always hear how jay “bit” biggie but no one mentions how BIG told busta (this came frm a busta quote in one of them 10 year anniversaries of ready to die in the xxl) that jay was the next to blow?
rakim and eric b both big up jay and what he’s doing
chuck d actually said that jay is in a league of his own and is moving hip hop foward.
big daddy kane is another one that co-sign jay and shopped him around to these rec execs and they aint see the vision.
all these i heard on eric b and friends on allhiphop radio so its most recent
but STILL people act like this guys whole career was a mistake or pure luck.

nas isnt where jay is cause he (nas) didnt sellout. thats ur opinion not a fact
how did jay “sell out”? by being independent? by being a owner? u do realize 2 things
1) these same rappers would love to be in jays SOCKS let alone his shoes
and
2) the same story was said about MC hammer. he was a sellout and all that
and once mc hammer went away them same rappers that dissed him (LL and Ice cube to name a few) is doing what he started.
his career isnt a mistake its a fraud? smh@ your vague statments based off your opinion.
a 40 year old independent rapper that owns his shit is selling out nowadays huh?

@mr wayne
jay is also solidified as the GOAT and he got co-signs frm rappers that YOU would deem legends he also get co-signs frm people that dont even fucks with him like dat so that cant be questioned so i dont get what is getting twisted?

Jay-z/Rocafella had no ethical or legal obligation to maintain Siegel’s musical career or financial well being.
Beans minimal buzz died years ago during one of his many jail stints, along with the fact he never produced a hit single.
Artists are commodities to a label, once you cease to be a valuable commodity, you’re essentially useless.
People with a loser mentality tend to exert energy pointing the blame at others for their shortcomings, i.e Beans, Jaz-O.

Well said Flex, that is why the big dog and Angie Ma run NYC radio objective, honest, opinions calling out the faults of both sides despite there personal relationships with the parties involved. Most interesting quotes:
“I think Jay was wrong for not letting Sigel out the contract because once an artist tells you he’s upset or tells you he wants to leave, I think you should let him leave.”
“Don’t get caught up in the attention that you get because you say something disrespectful, now all of the sudden everybody pushes a camera in your face, and you think they care about your opinion, cause they don’t. They care about the person your talking about”, “50-cent has mastered that, that’s his craft I would leave that to 50″
“Anytime Jay-Z used to come in this building, I was always just concerned about the Jay-Z album, when he’s gonna do this gonna do that, but he was like yeah flex but I got this memphis bleek album I got this Beanie Sigel album, I remember he told me about Sigel.”
“Just make good records. I think this is all a waste of time, if Hov didn’t have a good album no one would care. No one said anything during the last album a year ago. I guess everyones getting a little scared he’s starting to pull away from the pack again and when I say everyone I mean EVERYONE.”
“A restart!..That means there was a start!” LOL
“Is it cause your not on the Roc-Nation, well you weren’t supposed to be on the Roc-Nation I’m a firm believer NY in having your turn, if you had your turn and your shot then that’s it you had your turn and your shot, what you do with it is your decision, it’s not my decision to put money in the piggy bank for you, what are we upset about here…”
Those were the most interesting points to me that flex made and they are all valid points he’s got a perspective that we can’t have he’s seen this Roc-A-Fella thing at it’s earliest stages from the inside, all the way to his eventual dismantling, and re-birth as the Roc-Nation so I’m glad he weighed in on it. With that said for god sakes may he be the last and may this be over with so we can focus on what’s right with hip-hop today, like the Wale album, can he translate great critical acclaim and mix-tape success into a successful recording career, and 50-Cent’s new album out today can he recapture the fire of his first release after a few sub par followups and remain amongst the upper echelon of this ever changing hip-hop seen.

All this talk of Jay giving Beans things…What did Beans give Jay? How bout actual street cred, because as I recall correctly, many folks weren’t sold on Jay after Reasonable Doubt. The whole Roc La Familia era wasn’t all Jay-Z. It was Beans bringing those Philly boys wit him, Bleek, and the feeling that RocaFella was actually a movement instead of a camel and that other bald guy. Beans and Bleek gave the bark and grit that Jay COULD NOT AND NEVER DO.
How is Jay a biter? I will give you a few examples
1) Das Efx flow in the early 90s. See his feature on Big L’s Lifestyles album, or the freestyle Jay had with L, where L obviously makes Jay look silly.
2) Reasonable Doubt drops, all of a sudden he’s mafioso. Riding off the steam of The Infamous, illmatic, OBFCL, peep his samples of Nas, and Prodigy.
3)Biggie and Pac are dead, Puffy topping the charts with his horrible music. Can’t work with Puffy? Grab Jermaine Dupree.
I’m not gonna break down every infraction, because that’s just silly.
I don’t care about his money, who he knows, or what he does. I DON’T KNOW HIM. What I do know is his music, and from 1st track to BP3, Jay has consistently ridden the wave of whatever style is popular. He is the ultimate chameleon and too many people fall for it. HE SUCKS.
THE PROBLEM WITH RAP MUSIC IS FANS ARE AFRAID TO CRITIQUE RAPPERS NOW.

Everybody influenced each other back then. It’s not that people are afraid to critique rappers, there’s too many fans who never listened to hip-hop back then but act like they know what was poppin back then.
In a few years people are goin to be saying the same about 50 Cent. History repeats itself.
Jay-Z Vs Jaz O
Nas Vs 2Pac
Ja Rule Vs 50 Cent.
Thats like saying Get Rich or Die Tryin is a bootleg of Venni Vetti Vecci. To a cat that don’t know about hip-hop, they’ll buy that argument and say 50 Cent is a chameleon too.

Nas didn’t bite his style, but he did tat his stomach like Pac. The person who jacked Pac style was JaRule… do the knowledge to CMC (Blunt Records) JaRule compared to the JaRule in JZ’s video “Can I Get A”.
As far as the Game being influenced by Eazy-E, nothing wrong with that. They’re a generation apart. Same with Nas and Ra, or JayZ and King Asiatic Nobody Equal or PE and NWA.
Now if you said Rakim and EPMD or LL and MC Shan or Das and Fu-Shnickens or ATCQ and them dudes KRS-One threw off the stage, then I would understand.

Something I posted on another site about JZ calling himself the “best rapper alive” and Rakim co-signing:
It’s debatable what it takes to be the “best rapper alive” or “of all-time”.
JZ is in a financial position that overshadows arguments of his actual talent. Let’s think about it in another perspective. Say for instance, Mos Def’s “you haven’t been challenged” perspective. Mos says this w/ diss tracks aside, but for this argument that’s only one of the many options one can go by.
When you look at JZ’s accomplishments only a few names can truly be debated w/ or against him.
Exhibit A: 2Pac challenged JZ on 3 tracks. The first being “Hit ‘Em Up” which originally had 2Pac stating “F**k JZ!” etc.
Verdict: JZ for w/e reason didn’t reply (or @ least directly). 2Pac won by default. I’ll let you guys fill in those reasons.
Exhibit B: JZ Ft. BIG-”Brooklyn’s Finest”
Verdict: A 23 yr old BIG rapping alongside a 26 yr old JZ. BIG rhymed since the early 90’s. JZ since the late 80’s. Do the math. Talent out-shined age and “wisdom in the rap game”, as BIG proved that for himself on this track.
Exhibit C: Beef w/ Pun and Pun being lyrically better than JZ.
Verdict: JZ was shook when it came to Pun. Especially after their incident @ the club w/ the bottle of Crys that was thrown. No one outside of NY heard about this because JZ was too shook to say anything in his rhymes. Pun threw a jab or two. No one heard a whisper from JZ’s corner of the Hip Hop world @ that time. Pun dies… couple yrs later JZ feels like there’s no one left to question the “king of NY” status, so he goes after Nas. We know what happened after that though…
Exhibit D: DMX VS JZ Freestyle Battle.
Verdict: DMX won. JZ lost. Next.
Exhibit E: JZ Ft. Em-”Renegade”
Verdict: I’m not an Em fan at all. Talented guy, just don’t care for him personally. As a fan of JZ’s work prior to this track, I was left in awe of that “white boy”. His “flow is foolish”. I hated to admit that “Em killed J on that track”. It’s true though, Em “murdered him” on his own $#!+.
Exhibit F: Nas-”Ether” and the entire JZ vs Nas battle.
Verdict: Bottom line, JZ got “Ethered”. As a former JZ fan I can’t deny that even before “Ether” Nas was killin JZ. From the subliminal in “We Will Survive” to the crushing defeat of Bleek in “Da Bridge 2001″ which threw clever jabs and shots towards JZ; to the “Stillmatic Freestyle (H to the Omo)” to “U Wanna Be Me” and beyond, Nas was consistently lyrical and ferocious in this battle. I can not honestly say the same for JZ.
JZ didn’t have that fire after “The Takeover”. If not for his connections (I’ll let you fill in that blank) and his courtship to Beyonce which solidified his presence in mainstream media, he would have fallen into Hip Hop obscurity. Not necessarily mediocrity.
My opinions are just that, OPINIONS. I just want JZ fans and even JZ Stan’s to think outside the box. How can an artist no matter how much money they have, consider themselves the “best rapper alive” or “of all-time” off of sales, chart positions, debuts etc and not look at direct challenges as a source?
Think about this, JZ’s been challenged by a few notable artists since “Ether” and hasn’t done much to answer back. Why? “JZ ain’t got time for that, he’s makin too much money, he’s got Beyonce” etc.
Kings of the past, when challenged would meet the challenger head on defending his kingdom. If not they would lose their thrown and kingdom correct? If you have “no time because you’re making money” then you don’t deserve the crown as king in this “competitive sport” called Rap. You deserve to be called one of the “best/greatest business moguls of Hip Hop” but not the “best/greatest Rapper alive or of all time”. He’s ONE of the best. Not THE best.
Side note: After releasing BP3 we see he’s stolen Kanye West’s swag. On some Ye-Z type $#!+ now.

Flex,
hows that ban on Interscope going?
How you going to speak on this situation and you don’t know what started it all. Ask Jay on air, why did he call the alphabet boys on Beans. Or are you worried about Jay not hitting you off with some exclusive RocNation songs to drop bombs to?

While I respect Flex’s role in the history of this game and helping to bring it where it is today, HE IS SUCH A CORNBALL!!! HE REALLY SOUNDS LIKE A JAY Z STAN!!! (THIS COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO IS A BIG JAY FAN, MUSICALLY AT LEAST)
FIRSTLY THE ONLY REASON BEANS MADE THE RECORD IS BECAUSE OF JAYS SLICK TALK ON BP3 SO IF ANYTHING JAY WAS WRONG FOR SAYING WHAT HE SAID FIRST.
SECONDLY EVERYTHING HE SPOKE ABOUT IS WHAT BEANS SAID THIS NOT ABOUT
HE NEEDS TO JUST STICK TO HIS PAY FOR PLAY DJ SHOW AND KEEP DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST WHICH IS PLAYINGTHE SAME DAMN SONGS EVERYNIGHT!!!!

OMG…
Too much hate and love on this topic.
But still much interest.
That’s why this guy has accomplished more than others, his fame will remain, no matter what, or who he is really.
Imagine after his death how popular he’s gonna be?!
