Eddie Huang Speaks on Combating Racism and Stereotypes at #TED2013

The homie Eddie Huang, a.k.a. Mr. Fresh Off the Boat, made his TED Fellowship official last night as he gave a speech at the TED 2013 conference in Long Beach, California. The restauranteur-slash-writer-slash-hip-hop nerd recalled his first encounter with racism, and explained how his initial reaction — to fight back and distance himself from the dominant culture — only served to isolate him. It was on a trip to Taiwan when he realized that living without these barriers would allow him to live a full and free life. Always with the dope insight. Check out some audience-filmed footage of Eddie’s speech below.

Thanks info for posting this. I dealt with some racism yesterday and it really got to me and i lashed out but knowing that it isnt african-american who have to deal with this and knowing there are other ways to handle it makes me feel better.

Kids shouldn’t be forced into retaliatory situations. Teachers should have suspended Edgar, and if he did it again he should have been expelled. It was a lose lose situation for Eddie. If he beat up Edgar, he becomes the Asian kid who does kung fu regardless of if he actually did kung fu. And if he lets it slide then he becomes the weak Asian kid. Same for other minorities, especially black men. If you stand up for yourself then you’re angry. If you don’t stand up for yourself then you’re “unworthy” of a powerful position. Society should beat down the Edgars of the world.
