Wow. Very interesting quotes from LL Cool J in a new interview that my boy Shaheem did over at MTVNews.com. Damn near moving, in fact. Kind of makes you root for the man. Even if the chips are stacked against him (just given the type of raps that win these days).
Some excerpts:
LL speaks on his Def Jam criticism…
“These guys fail to realize that when you talk about Def Jam, you’re talking about my legacy. Everything that ever happened at Def Jam is my legacy. Without me being a 16-year-old with my rhyme book, Def Jam [wouldn't] exist. …I didn’t personally attack anyone [on 'Queens'], but at the same time I have the right to speak on something I helped build…
“Things are not all rosy up there [at Def Jam]. Too many [artists] have suffered: Method Man, Redman, the Roots, Fabolous, Ludacris! The list goes on. Nobody is getting promoted the way they should be promoted. I’m one man. I can’t battle a whole record label. So we not gonna try to turn this into what it’s not. To try and battle a record label is foolish. It’s bad enough they are calling around to radio stations telling them not to play my records.”
Yikes. Huh? What?
Jay-Z denies that accusation (“I would never block anybody’s blessings“), denies any pending lyrical battles and says…
“He’s upset, not me. If he wanna work it out, I’m more than willing to do that.”
Um, ok. Well fortunately, LL and Shaheem ends the piece with a more inspirational outlook…
“At this point I think the focus should be to make great music, trying to keep it positive, trying to have some sort of relationship where we can work together. Hopefully [Def Jam] can do well and look great, I can do well and look great. We can part company as civilized businessmen and give the world something great…. I wanna have some fun.”
“This is my last record on Def Jam, so it’s important that the record is not just another record… it’s gonna be a great reminder to people that I really did start that company with Russell [Simmons] and Rick Rubin and Heidi Smith, the secretary… I’mma deliver [what] I’m supposed to deliver and I’m not gonna ignore my male fans this time. I’m gonna embrace everybody. It’s gonna be real. I’mma be blunt, brutally honest, be frank, speak with clarity, and they gonna feel me.”
Well, I’m sold enough to give a listen. But one thing, no disrespect, L, but no more rhinestones, please : )

Jay-Z is about to take another L if they go at it. Its gonna be Nas all over again, remember how Nas was on the brink of irrelevance before Jay dissed him. This will rejuvenate L’s career.

Everybody should just accept that Jay-Z is the Def Jam boss already, I mean it’s common knowledge that record sales are at an all time low so it’s pointless and not good business to try andd promote something thats not gonna sell.
I’m not sayin LL would go brick, but it’s a new generation it’s about live perfomances that hiphop fans want (Stadium Status).
But I must admit the Kanye & 50 Marketing promotion was brilliant, 50 only lost in the UK because the polititians drugged his name through the mud as soon as the Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ Movie Posters went up.
Hiphop needs more original marketing ideas to sell otherwise selling 4K in ya 1st wk will be the norm. Can’t wait for the Whole American Gangster Extravaganza.

LL is slowly losing my respect, it seems that he is jealous that he wasn’t offered the president position over Jay-Z, the fact of the matter is LL’s last CD was crap! A bunch of radio friendly r&b wannabe cuts with a feature on every one! And now people are supposed to take him serious cause he’s aligned himself with 50?! True enough I can see where he may be upset of course American Gangster is gonna get that heavy promotion so stop cryin’ & deal with it.
Furthermore on “Queens” we know who he’s talking about why do MC’s feel they have to run to G-Unit to get respect in the hood?
The fact of the matter is posters, stickers & street teams don’t sell records, true talent does Cool j’s last CD had 2 videos out before the CD came out don’t blame Hov cause the people didn’t respond.
All I’m really trying to say is that some artists aren’t selling because they’re trying to stay relevant in a industry where the next dance craze (Soulja Boy) is what seems to reach the kids, the attention span of the average consumer is so short they’ll be on the next fad before the spring!
And on a side note I don’t know what all the fuss is about over Joe Buddens? I mean I know he’s the shit in NY but I’m from Detroit and he’s not mentioned as being a great MC but maybe a new deal and CD can change my mind!

i wonder does ll think honestly that he would have done better on any other label? all the artist that he named are “up north” artist. is jeezy complaining? is rick ross complaining? i never heard luda say anything about def jam, but if ll says so.
i dont think jay is the responsible party for their lackluster performance on the charts. jay can’t make the album for you, and he can’t spend millions of dollars to create the space for you to do 1.5 million (at best). who is ll’s fanbase now? ll is living in a fantasy land, if he thinks he could produce more then 50 did with the marketing, and multiple singles he put out.
wake up ll, and start lookin’ into your industry and trends, and stop blaming others for you drifting into obscurity.

Ok STFU LL I’m so sick of artist complaining when there record doesn’t sell “It’s the Label” no nigga it’s you. When was the last time LL released an album and you didn’t know about it before hand. Def Jam does plenty of promotion it’s just LL is not as hot as he used to be if the songs aren’t hot there’s nothing Def Jam can do about that. And even if you aren’t getting any love from the label we live in a digital age with the internet you have the power to speak to your fans directly and do your own promotion so stop complain about what somebody didn’t do for you and do it yourself.

rent, def jam is NOT the only record label with “creative” ways to boost their artist. get over it… it’s business at the end of the day.i would think jay is more concerned with the success that is attributed to him when all these artist win. that would be the only reason i can see he doesn’t but out joe budden. everyone is complaining bout joey not coming out with an album. i dont think joey would sale more then hell rell to be honest. joey dont have a bigger buzz then that dude, and he sold about 2700 albums in ny, and 2713 worldwide. get your panties out of a bunch.
NO label OWES an artist anything. if the artist dont like the way contracts are written, dont sign to a major label. they bout making money, not continuing YOUR idea of a legacy or albums released because of “right”.

@bize #20, I totally agree. If you don’t like the contract, don’t sign it. Frankly, I don’t see how this has anything to do with jay-z. He is an employee of Def Jam as well and has people and shareholders to answer to as well. And I would think he wants to maximize his profits whoever the artist is. I mean it would be one thing if he didn’t give LL a release date, but he did, so why wouldn’t he want the project to be succesful. I am not going to sit here and defend jay-z b/c who knows if he is good at his job or not? But at some point LL needs to take some responsiblity for his own actions. If he doesn’t like Def Jam’s practice right now, that make other moves.

All u Jay Z ridin monkeys
LL was the first artist signed to Def Jam in 1984 and dropped “I Need a Beat” which was Def Jams first hit record. Let me repeat that so all you donkeys (jackass’s) can understand. “I Need a Beat” was Def Jams first hit record.
Jay Aint Never Been The Same Since Nas “Ethered” Him…The Blueprint 2 was garbage..The Blueprint 2.1 was a ripoff..The Black Album was lackluster and then he retired lol
Nas at the time, was down and out with his garbage and worst album Nastradamus, then Jay-Z opened his mouth and came at Nasty Nas with Takeover at Summer Jam…What Has Nas Done Since Then??? Stillmatic “Classic”…God Son “Near Classic”…The Lost Tapes “Classic”…
Street Disciple “Near Classic Double CD”…..AND “HIP HOP IS DEAD” which everyone agree’s was better than Kingdom Come.
Its Not Even Remotely Close Who Won that Battle..Lyrically Nas is like Jordan…Jay-z Is Like Scottie Pippen, He Nice, He Just aint JORDAN LOL
Jay-Z Did The Right Thing by Signing Nas to his Label..If u cant Beat Em..Join Em LOL
And As far As L.L Cool J goes…The Man Has Sold over 25 Million Records and Made with Music/Movies Combined over 150 Million dollars..His kids Kids Kids Kids Kids will be millionaires lol…LL has nothing to prove..he just raps cause of his pride right now and cause he prolly get tired and bored of just sitting at home spending money lol…LL has nothing more to prove…Sales..MoneyforLife..LONGEVITY..LL’S career is Un-Matched.
And Canibus??? Didnt That dude Join The Army??? lol, He’s Prolly a Dope Furturistic Rhyming Cab Driver Now lol, Still Blaming Wyclef for his Non-Existent Rap Career lol

DVJ:The Black Album was lackluster
Question: Is this kid on hallucenogens?
What more can I say, Encore, Threat, 99 Problems, Lucifer, and Allure are songs ppl will still be listening to 20 years from now.

The Black Album was lackluster. Jay is the most overrated rapper ever. He is not a leader he is a follower. He was never on top when the big dogs were around. Here is a list of jays lackluster albums…
Vol 1
Vol 3
Blueprint 2
Blueprint 2.1
Kingdom Come
I won’t put Black Album because Bize says.
That’s 5 pretty much wack albums…are you serious? LL will destroy Jay because Jay can’t say anything to him…what can jay say to L?

You can’t count blueprint 2.1 as seperate from blueprint 2 since blueprint 2.1 is a combo of the best songs from “gift” and “curse” CD’s on Blueprint 2…u just reaching for Jay to have “wack” albums…
So ur obviously a Jay hater and u can only name 4 out of his 9 albums (RD,Vol 1,2,3,Roc la Familia, Blueprint 1 and 2, Black, Kingdom Come) that u think are “wack”…that right there is a sign he’s a lot nicer than u wanna admit…I know damn sure LL only has like 4 albums that are good….4 out of 12? …..dats not a good track record bro.

Like Dre said rapping is a young mans game, that’s why he stick to producing. lets be real this is a new era of hip hop. the average rapping life span of a good rapper in da mainstream who brings that heat is like 10 years. shit be changing cuddy. dudes in the game right now are either on the come up, some are carrying the torch, some about to pass the torch, some making their run trynna leave a mark in the game, some maintaining, some on their way out, some trytnna get that papaer right, some bout to fade to black, some just rap for the love of it then there are those who are trynna stay relevant i can go on and on, most yall can see where i am going wuiht this. after the spot light, if they make it that far, they fall back adn do shows outside the mainstream. L been in the game like 20+ years, he can bitch bout this and that, but his run is ova but his legacy is there, as skillfull as he is on the mic he aint got nada 2 prove really if ya think bout it, neither does J. do ya know how many rappers came and went from the time L and j started rapping? how much shit has happened in the game and how much things have changed since then?

Ummm, the Blueprint 2 and Blueprint 2.1 are the same album, and if you didn’t appreciate Kingdom Come than you’re probably not old enough to remember when LL Cool J was the shit, and Vol 1 is a classic. On the other hand LL COOL J put out 14 Shots to the Dome..and every able that came after that and they were all garbage. LL COOL J is a great rapper and an icon but he’s not a very saavy business man. He hasn’t done a very good job of staying relevant like say a Q-Tip. He can only do battle raps and love songs, and who the hell wants an hour plus of that? Jay-Z is like Picasso with the mic. LL should be yelling at his manager and his A&R for not working on his image more. The proof of his lack of business Saavy is evident, he named his clothing line Todd Smith, who the hell is gonna purchase that?

ll’s just mad he wasn’t asked to be president. he feels hurt that his legacy wasn’t as highly regarded by the company he help’d create. well he was the main artist on the label when it took a serious PLUNGE in the early 90’s. def jam became relevant again when jay, and a host of others made them a player again. i’m not naive enough to give jay all the credit, because there were some very savy business moves made, and some great partnerships with upstart labels too. ll has never been looked at like a boss, just a customer, and that troubles his ego. ll may have built def jam, but jay kept it up (nh)
dont hate the player, hate the game LOSER LAME

@ everyone on this page ridin LL’s dick, did ya’ll buy his last album…? I would guess no, cuz LL been slippin, and i agree that rap is a young man’s sport, but the sport is so watered down right now that everybody and crew wanna rap.
Another question…if def jam buys there albums, why didn’t they buy Fab, Rick Ross, Rihanna, NeYo and all them other albums that didnt do so well?
U all need to lay off and start supporting. Stop “bootleggin” and start supportin. Shit, the amount of support LL gettin now, his ass should go platinum, but i doubt cuz no one’s gonna buy it, they jus gon hit up the nearest illegal download site (limewire, aries or some shit), better yet, dude in the barbershop, two for $5.
@DVJ….Canibus ripped LL lyrically, no matter wat u say so talk about that 2nd round knock was one of the illest dis tracks ever. LL’s ghost writer was pretty good to help him with that one (NB: Rappers who use ghost writers are washed up)

To all those that said kingdom come was “whack” I have news for you…. Its called growth. I mean Did any of yall really listen to it. It basically is telling people where Jay was at when he recorded that album. I mean he make 30something million that year alone in business deals, endosements, and royalty checks. Come on people how can yall holla “keep it real” when he was business Jay-Z I mean Sean Cater. O and as far as LL is concerned it sounds like he is mad cuz his boss is his comp. I mean hell if I was him I would feel some sort of way too, but to be honest Jay really couldn’t say much about LL I mean check the stats: help start a major label. go from rapper to actor. millionair many times over. and author of a book for people to work out with. I mean what more can i sayyyyyyy. I said it before and I am going to say it again… This beef sounds like something Def Jam cooked up to help boost buzz about the label. What better way then with the president and its longest active member beef. Good job def jam take all the notice off the decline in Kayne West album sales numbers. LOVE IT LAO

i idea that hip-hop is a young mans business is a sad myth that is perpetuated by people who want to keep hip-hop box’d up.
hip-hop will stay a young man’s came if the artist dont grow their topics and their audiences. you have a shelf life for the artist if all they talk bout is selling drugs, and killing people. at some point your message begins to be unbelievable, giving way to younger people who are closer to the “streets”. if an artist is successful enough to diversify their topics, and allowing their audience to grow with them, then they will enjoy longevity that most do not. take outkast, and de la soul for instance. they are not in a box and their audience and fan base has grown with them. am i the same dude that bought reasonable doubt, that bought kingdom come? hell no, i have grown up, and i know a bit more bout the world, and want music that reflects that growth, and i hope the artist grows with me.
i’m glad jay is not tryin’ to peter pan with the rest of hip-hop.

Don’t you think if Canibus won that battle..he would still be here? LOL
Canibus went to the Army and came back as a cab driver…

Jay better be real easy on this one..
If he loses another battle, he will suffer big time.
2 niggas from Queens at that LOL..Nas and LL..
Don’t be surprised if it turns out to be 3 because 50 is going at him on Before I Self Destruct…
Remember you heard it here first Monkeys…..
Whats up Miss Info?
You know you wrong for letting these people disrespect LL like this…
They need to show him a little more respect..
It’s got to the point where people actually think Kingdom Come was good.
When it first dropped everybody was disappointed.
Hollywood with Beyonce is one of the worse songs in the history of the western hemisphere…
Beach Chairs?
That’s growth…you say it’s because he earned so much money that year?
50 is on pace to earn well over what Jay earned last year and you don’t hear him rapping about no dumb shit like that…

DVJ…..u just named a bunch of LL SINGLES….NOT ALBUMS….genius.
Can u please name 5 LL ALBUMS (out of his 12 complete albums) that are actually good??? Do us that favor…
If every1 in here started naming the monster SINGLES Jay has had…we’d all be here 4ever.
That same Vol.1 where u point out the “wack” sunshine song is also the same album that produced “where I’m from (Marcy)”….”friend or foe ‘98″…..”Imaginery Player”…..”Streets is watching”……”Who ya wit”…..”Faceoff (w/ sauce Money)”….and “Rap game/Crack Game”….Thats 7 BANGERS ON A “WACK” JAY Z almbum….did LL have 5 or more bangers on his “wack” or “lackluster” albums….very doubtful.
Saying Jay ain’t one of the best to ever do it is like saying Jordan was a medicore ball player…It sounds like pure HATE.
LL is a legend and I actually like his new song that Flex been spinning, so I take nothing away from him. 20 years as a rapper….I dont think any1 else will have that kind of longevity….but u talking like Jay is some type of bumb…
Homie the cars u daydream about, the bottles u wanna pop in the club, the grade/quality of diamonds u want in ur jewelry, the trips u wanna go on…Dats all Jay…I’m 26 now and I aint ashamed to say I learned alot of that materialistic (although still necessary) sh*t from listening to Jay since I was 15…I mean BIG exposed alot of it but he passed before he could really go in. Jay picked up the crown and set the bar for EVERY OTHER RAPPER SINCE 1998.

“@ all LL fans-Doing it was a remake of the 1988 hit done by lakesha.LL took the whole song and remade with Lakesha. So he shouldnt get credit for that song.”
03 Bonnie and Clyde wasn’t a remake?
Sunshine wasn’t a remake?
I know what girls like wasn’t a remake?
Negro please…
Then he says
“LL is overated. He is the sex symbol.Thats all.”
Even the people here arguing with me don’t agree with you on that.
LL overrated?
Do you realize this man came out before RUN DMC? Before Rakim? Before Kool G Rap?
Grant it…his last album wasn’t good. But how many times have we seen a record label push a wack album? Rick Ross, Jeezy, Bleek and Young Guns. (Notice how most of them are on Def Jam) If you think any of those albums were good..then I’ll stop now because obviously we have different tastes on music.
Civan says:
“The last fanbase ll had majorly was 4rm actn(In da house, any given sun. N whateva else he was lickn his lips n)….”
Here let me help you with that whatever else he was lickin his lips in…
Halloween H20
In Too Deep
Any Given Sunday
Deep Blue Sea
Charlies Angels
Kingdom Come (weird huh)
Rollerball
Deliver Is From Eva
SWAT
Mindhunters
LMAO…go kill yourself hater. LL has a career that is unmatched.
20 movies
13 Albums
Grammys
4 NAACP Image Awards
10 Soul Train Awards
Jay Z has (According to record sales)
Reasonable Doubt – Classic
In My Lifetime – Flop
Vol 2 – Good not classic
Vol 3 – Flop
Dynasty – Good not classic
Blueprint – Classic
Blueprint 2 – Flop
Black Album – Good not classic
Kingdom Come – Flop
Best of Both Worlds – Flop
Unfinished Business (remember that album with R. Smelly?) – Flop
Collision Course – (remember that album with Linkin Park from 2004?) – Flop
What did the Streets is Watching sell? Not the movie which also flopped…I’m talking about the album.
Circus says:
“That same Vol.1 where u point out the “wack” sunshine song is also the same album that produced “where I’m from (Marcy)”….”friend or foe ‘98″…..”Imaginery Player”…..”Streets is watching”……”Who ya wit”…..”Faceoff (w/ sauce Money)”….and “Rap game/Crack Game”….Thats 7 BANGERS ON A “WACK” JAY Z almbum”
You forgot to mention it had The City is Mine, I Know What Girls Like, Sunshine and Real Niggas with Too Short. If all those other songs you named was hot…why did he release Sunshine as his first single? Was he being influenced by the Bad Boy era like I said? Man he looked like Joe Camel..even he and Dame said that LOL…horrible look.
Get off my dick and tell your bitch to come here LOL….
I guess you like that new Blue Magic song and your all set for another Jay Z comeback huh?
Then you say LL don’t sell…
Who has more album sales throughout their career?
LL has 12 albums and Jay has 12 albums…13 if you count Collison Course.
Wow!!!!
Hey Circus….your mothers name is Barry.

DVJ, are you on LL’s street team, a friend, family or what?
I don’t think anyone posting here wants to see LL fail, it’s just we are living in 2007, not ‘97 or ‘87.
When’s the last time LL dropped a relavent mixtape or even a mixtape at all? Is LL out promoting his rap career or filming movies? Go on a tour and perform in clubs(all sizes) nationwide, charge a reasonable price. Anything to get a buzz going besides dissing Jay. Throwing 50’s name on a cd doesn’t mean anything, ask Mobb Deep and Tony Yayo.
If LL enjoys rapping, drop this last Def Jame album then go independent like Ice Cube and don’t bitch about your lack of sales. Are there any rap stars of the 80’s still selling albums on a major label? Besides Dr. Dre(he doesn’t count because he hasn’t dropped a cd anytime recently) Tell Def Jam to drop a greatest hits album to meet your album requirements. See if Rick Rubin will do a bunch of tracks for your independent release. Become the biggest independent selling artist of 2008 and show Def Jam.
If my memory serves me correctly…didn’t Fergie want cash from him for a feature instead of swapping features(like LL wanted) on their respective cd’s?

@ DVJ……
U IGNORANT SLUT…..(miss info I know u see the SNL influence…lol)
Streets is watching was NOT an album it was a track of of VOL. 1…if ur short yellow bus ass would take the time to read u woulda seen that in the schooling u got earlier in this post by not just me but other ppl in here.
U STILL AIN’T NAME the “classic” LL’s albums. And since ur an employee of his…or maybe even his son…..U should get busy with that list.
XXL, the Source, various other hip hop media, writers, etc. would call Vol.2 (5 million sold), and the Black album more than just “good”…but whateva, dats ur opinion…U know Opinions are like escalades, every body got em.
Who cares what he released as his first single if the rest of the album was very, very, very good….why the f*CK did LL release
“Phenomenom” as his first single of one his last albums…and LL was in that video wearing a PATENT LEATHER YELLOW jumper..And y are u listing LL’s movies when 90% of them shits were garbage AND box office flops…The movie for the black album sold more tickets than half the movies u listed dumbass.
As for the comments about my mother, gf, grandma, auntie, whateva other female connected to me that u wanna disrespect…..HOMIE THIS IS A BLOG….U GET NO POINTS TALKIN TUFF IN HERE…just that fact that u would even try lets me know im either talking to some prepubescent, acne ridden idiot or some lil half a flamer dats about as hard as twinkie fillin. Miss me with dat foolishness.

BTW any1 whose heard Roc Boys or even better Dead Presidents III yet knows that troglodyte’s like this dvj character are just haters that can’t admit that Jay is top 5 dead or alive…..
Even if u dont like the guy (Like he said “dats gay/I ain’t into liking dudes no way)…u shouldn’t be afraid to admit that he’s a legend.
I think LL is a legend who cant accept the fact that he’s not as relevant as he used to be. I think that Jay has maybe 2 more albums in him and then he should chill and let the new generation TRY and meet the benchmarks he’s set as an MC/entrepreneur.

I agree with anyone who says it’s not the labels’ fault all the time if your album flops, it’s the artist. Kanye didn’t get any promotion on his first album other than his own promoting but because the music was classic the album took off.
LL has himself to blame. He lost focus with music when he focused more on movies and television.
LL please don’t try to make the album for the fellas because we really don’t dig you like that. We appreciate the girly songs you do so we can listen to them while picking up the girls.
LL please don’t try to awaken the sleeping giant. Humble yourself and go apologize to HOVA THE GOD. He will finish you with just half of a bar. Check the I Get Money remix verse. If you continue this, it might not go the way you want it to go.
If people wanted to hear your song LL they will request it. If you don’t hear it on the radio, it’s because nobody’s requesting it.
I am a Hov fan so just know that if you beef with Hov you beef with me. Nas did the smart thing, if you cant beat’em join’em.
Think logically about this battle in terms of this current NFL season. The Cowboys were exposed by the Bills last week coming into that game with a 4-0 record winning by one point. Those five wins were to all weaker teams(LLs’ battles were to weaker opponents) but when they faced off with the Patriots(HOVA THE GOD IS LIKE THE PATRIOTS), they received the beating they deserved as will LL if he crosses that line.
