Drake Tells Nahright: Common’s Beef Isn’t Hip Hop, It’s Publicity
Posted by Miss Info under about miss info , beef , crony-ism , quotes , relationships and family[74] Comments

(photoshop via EgoTrip’s video montage)
Let us quickly recap the season of Common vs. Drake Beef thus far:
Common dates Serena Williams. Drake dates Serena Williams. Common is down with Kanye. Drake is down with Young Money. Common spits subliminals at Drake on “Sweet.” Drake makes subliminal outburst onstage in Cali. Common admits to Drake subliminal disses on the song “Sweet”. Drake spits subliminal lyrics in “Stay Scheming.” Common disses Drake by name on “Stay Scheming” remake. Common tells interviewers the beef is just normal “hip hop competitiveness” and that he’s done….
But does Drake see this as just rap battling? Will there be a rebuttal? Nahright’s Nation (a liner-noted friend of Drake’s) got an exclusive comment from Drake on the set of “The Zone” video:
Nation: So people want to know: will you respond to Common?
Drake: No. Because despite how it’s been worded by him that situation is not a “hip hop moment” or a “battle for the sake of musical integrity”…it’s a ploy for attention around the release of an album. More than anything it was just disappointing cause what kid isn’t a fan of what Common has done for our genre. A guy who made such an incredible career for himself based off expressing genuine feelings about life and love is now targeting me for sharing my story.
Oh. Dang.
After the jump, Drake explains why he took a shot at Kobe’s wealthy ex-wife on “Stay Scheming”….

(never can get enough EgoTrip parody)
While everyone was analyzing Drake’s subliminals towards Common on Rick Ross’ song “Stay Schemin’”….the line that turned into a meme was about Kobe Bryant’s expensive split with his now ex-wife Vanessa.
Kobe ’bout to lose a hundred fifty M’s
Kobe, my n—a I hate it had to be him
Bitch, you wasn’t with me shooting in the gym
(Bitch, you wasn’t with me shooting in the gym)
Vanessa ended up with 75 M’s not 150, but she certainly earned more from her time as “good wife” than she ever would have….as a video extra which is what she was when she met Kobe. However…I’d say a more relevant rap line might be: “Bitch, I must have had a mild concussion when I refused legal counsel and the pleas from my family when I passed on a pre-nup….”
Nation asked Drake about the line, and he chalked it up to….sucks to be you, won’t be me.
Nation: There’s a line from your “Stay Schemin” verse about Kobe’s soon to be ex-wife Vanessa that has gotten some negative attention. Can you speak to what you were trying to express with that line?
Drake: That line came from a conversation about being this young and making this much money and the fear of losing it all. I just used his potential situation to address my own life. I never intended to offend Vanessa or anyone else. That line had everything to do with me and what goes on in my head as a 25 year old man with this much income flowing in. Kobe is and always will be a friend and an icon to me.

Yes, because Drake knows all about hip hop, and he is able to define what is and isn’t it. Battles are part of hip hop history, branching from cyphers. He was obviously listening to r&b music until he was 15, i e 2000s and now he’s masterful.
How about him not responding isn’t hip hop, it’s a cop out to not appear losing. He takes indirect shots all the time.

This is a lose lose situation for Drake. No genuine hip hop fan/enthusiast will pick Drake over Common in a rap battle & if they do they’re def younger than 24.
So what if it was a publicity stunt on the Chi Town native’s part, ultimately it all comes down to lyrical ability & even tho Drake is nice, Common is nicer & Drake know it, no matter how many radio spins he gets, records he sell, money he makes… Common is part of Hip Hop hierarchy, a place Drake can only dream of.
P.S. “…feeling like rap changed, there was a time it was rugged” what the fuck typa shit is this? if rap changed it’s cause of you!

great point, those are normally obvious indicators that point towards a cop-out due to comfortability when it comes to the art competition. #drakeneedskobesystem lol
1. The fellow artist claims the other is pulling a publicity stunt and is trying to capitalize off them.
2. The artist feels its beneath him/her to compete because they have nothing to prove or gain.
Imagine everyone who won a championship or has obtained a certain level of success didn’t feel like they still had to compete.

@gillmoore you understand this rap thing is a business right?..not a sport…within your comment you hint that what common is doing is not a publicity stunt..well how do you explain a b-side single to open your album to go with his outta left field feelings?fyi sweet was a weak lyrical attempt at dissing drake..you’re not even a man” kinda bitter, but he was man enough to fuck that she hulk of a bitch serena..lol..but seriously..common quickly went on the radio to say sweet was directed at drake..sweet cause he makes hoe music…wait! if you make music for woman that should make you unsweet cause to claim someone is sweet is to say you’re kinda gay but ill chalk that up to the hip hop mentality of believing that a dude who raps about hating hoes loving his niggas fighting and shooting other niggas as being hard and real..0_o????now after the diss people wanna interview common how regularly wouldnt, but as ive seen in alot of interviews they dont even ask about the album he just dropped..if common felt singing was weak or felt you gotta go at somebody who claims to be the best why not jay z or kayne? kayne made a whole album of autotune singing..which is by far worst..jayz and kayne have an album called watch the throne claim to be the best why not?because that wouldnt be in his interest.personally i rather another so far gone than to hear drake try to diss another rapper…thats not his lane and it on top of that dissing people dnt sell records…look at 50 effort at that…its about music good music.

@majest: A publicity stunt is only worthwhile when you are able to leverage the media spotlight to further your communication objectives without damaging your credibility. The reason you are so defensive is because drake’s credibility was damaged through main stream and used to promote common. Even if this was a common pr stunt its a smart move. It promoted him and hit its intended target; it created publicity and tied it to a timely event, it knocked drake of his high horse.
It sent out a clear message enough of the hammock swinging music!! F.Y.I: The sports analogy is fitting since he made a kobe bryant record. as stated previous drake needs the kobe system in his life lol

I agree with you. Even Drake himself knows he isnt the best and he always gives props to people he feels are ahead of him and are legends. For e.g Pusha T has said some subliminals about drake even though drake said he was a big pusha T fan. So why did Pusha T do it? Cos it was a stunt. Everybody knows thats it only a fruitful tree that keeps getting stoned at.

Save the “conscious Black rapper” nonsense. You obviously missed Common and Ice Cube beefing back in the day. Common is not some one-dimensional rapper rhyming about positivity all the time. He can get raw, dirty and battle when he wants to.
In this case he was just responding to Drake. Because Drake can’t take the heat he’s scrambling out of the kitchen! Fine, but don’t make Common out to be some bad guy for doing what true MCs do! Battling has always been at the heart of hip hop.

Dude, its called hip hop, not black on black crime. You are obviously a huge Drake fan, so just admit to that and stop rambling on about how Drake is justified in not responding back to a diss record, which at the end of the day, is entertaining and good for hip hop in its current state.

yall are ludicrously ignorant. This is by far the most interviews and publicity a common album is receiving in recent times and nearly almost all questions put at him have been about the “beef”. Why cant these simpletons just see beyond the surface of their myopia?
Common could have (as someone rightly mentioned )gone at Kanye for his 808 and heartbreaks album that was at best, putrid. He could have attacked wayne too for how to love. why didnt he?
Drakes response too made no mention of any names, it was purely subliminal why did common go on to mention his name? afterall drake just said “mention my name so i know it was directed at me” which is exactly what common did.
How does it now mean that drake is playing the victim?
I’m irked atimes by peoples sentimental views. Just because a rapper doesnt lie that he shot this and killed that but instead raps about his real hood, girls and how he grew up he becomes soft and sweet.
Drake already said it ” i know i dont make music for niggas who dont get pussy so those are the ones i count on to diss me or overlook me”

Drake stays talkin slick. Sweet wasn’t directed at him but he got offended & told Common to say his name next time and not to act like he didn’t “want none”. He said this in concert & on Ross’ “Stay Scheming”.
Common responds DIRECTLY, not cowardly, and now Drake backs out. Give me a break.

No, @Mimi you got it wrong. Common put out the song ‘Sweet’ which was subliminally directed at Drake.. So Drakes on stage and tells Common to say his name next time, then Common comes out and confirms ‘Sweet’ was a Drake diss..
Personally though I think the Stay Schemin’ track + video were recorded before Common replied, otherwise Drakes verse doesn’t make much sense haha

@Franck
Sweet wasn’t directed at anyone. Common heard the beat saying “You look so sweet” and made a song around that. He has said multiple times that it wasn’t directed to anyone, but if they wanted to get offended it was whatever.
Drake took offense (I guess he felt guilty) and responded on stage and then on record which is why Common dissed him. Drake started this whole thing but he doesn’t want to finish it. Same way he started beef with the tat artist but didn’t want to say anything when tat guy agreed to a fight. Drake is a pussy who talks too much… You people need to stop making excuses for him.

if you say drake felt guilty and responded (by not mentioning names) why didnt common continue with the subliminals trend or better still say “it wasnt directed at drake”. Drake didnt say common, “mention my name” he said that nigga should say his name next time and not act like he wants none. Why did common assume he was the one and respond? Its a viscious cycle, even you know that common dissed drake in sweet and drake (rightly) said it was done for records sake and as such doesnt merit a reply. I think that was mature but condescending of him.

How is it a stunt? Common never said his name in “Sweet”. he felt he was, he sent a reply. That’s what put him in the light. If he’s not sweet why say anything. So come on, what stunt.
Let’s keep it raw, he took his Maybach music pills thought he was Ray j and jumped out the window. When the pill wore off he’s like what have I done. Theres nothing wrong with being a good dude drake. But when you in a room were everyone thinks there a thug you feel you are too. Be your self.

first off Common always sells records. he does not need you to sell records hes that kind of artist hey.
Ok Common resonds to your verse n chops your head off n makes it look easy. like “hey i do dis in my sleep”. had you already sized up n everything.
N before you can collect ya thoughts on the record, ya bosses boss throws in the towel “STOP THE FIGHT!!”
i mean how can you really come back from being slapped up by a real rapper n then being sonned by ya record labels record label.

Common puts out records for 20 years and never does one publicity stunt and Drake wants us to believe Common does one *now* at a time when Com is making more money acting than rapping? FOH. That makes no sense at all. And why Drake? He thinks Com just pulled his name out of a hat? LMAO! Come on, dude. Drake would’ve been better off not saying anything at all and sticking to his “I’ll talk to Common when I see him” line. This makes no sense. Com was never the kind of rapper to start a random beef when his record was dropping. Besides, no one has blown up off of a beef since 50. That tactic died out years ago.

All of you made some good points. This is what I noticed though. When it comes to dissing Kim he was all over it. Then he made it seem like it was wack for Kim to respond to Nicki’s subliminal shots. Then he called it corny for Kim to say something about Nicki because Kim was a legend. Even though Ray J was poppin off he never mentioned Ray J. Next he openly disrespects Kobe’s wife. Divorce or not, that’s still the mother of his kids. Drake backpedals again. Then he talks about Common and makes the comment that it’s disappointing after he took all these shots at him in the one song. It was subliminal but everyone knows who you were talking about Drake. Stop hiding behind Birdman and Wayne and man up. He’s isn’t going to beat you up. Even Jay lost a battle. He needs to quit with the excuses.

Mother of his kids…bla bla..why live him now? whoever shes gown be with after wards is still gonna cheat on her. Its a man thing. At the end of the day shed realise she was better of with the cheating famous one. Except he abused her physically and from what it was that wasnt the case.

He did his “sweet” thingy then denied it was about drake only to renege and say “o yeah it was about drake” later on. Drake responded by calling it a stunt to push records because thats exactly what it was. without sweet common wouldnt have sold the 69k copies he did. when they want to do a mixtape they can beef themselves but for now lets just sell records the normal way.
Drake mentioned Vanessa because like common “they” werent there when you was trying to make ends meet. Now that youve made it they want to cash in on your success. Stunt!

1. Obviously everyone who replied with ‘Common doesn’t beef’ just started to listen to hip-hop. I guess they don’t remember his beef with Cube/Westside Connection in the mid-90s. Farrakhan had to squash that shit. And that brings me to point #2.
2. I can forgive people for being dumb and not knowing about 10+ year old beef. But how do you not think this was for publicity?
Com’on (pun intended), how stupid is you? If this beef never happened, would we even be talking about Common? Would we be saying, “Yo, Maya Angelou dropped a hot 16 on that new Common album!” The answer is no.

The people who have said Common doesn’t beef are saying he doesn’t beef for publicity. “I Used to Love H.E.R” wasn’t a publicity ploy. How would he know Ice Cube would take it personally?? The song was a general track about the state of hip hop with references to west coast hip hip. He didn’t mention names.
Common’s never been a 50 Cent type of gimmicky artist. And he’s never sold a lot so why would he think he would for his 9th CD? It doesn’t make a lick of damn sense. LOL If Common was a publicity hound he could’ve milked that Fox News controversy and rode that but he didn’t. He was very lowkey about that.
And yeah we actually WOULD be talking about Maya Angelou’s poem because there was “controversy” about her not liking the “n word” on the song. LOL So, uh yeah. And again, Common addressed that but he didn’t milk it for publicity.
Drake engaged in this “beef” and then asked for direct reply yet now he’s playing the victim. It’s bullshit.

why didnt Jay respond to lil waynes it is good. Jayz just said “its hip hop”. Do you remember how 50 made his album pitch against kanyes just so that it would sell. Thats the point! People could have said 50 is richer than Kanye why would he be doing it for this and that but really its all for relevance.
Common is largely irrelevant now to the game even though he was or is a legend. I have no personal grouch against him. I just felt it was irresponsible of him to attack drake for the same reason you defend him. Hell drake didnt mention his name at all he just said “now ni–as reach just to sell their records” why not respond subliminally why go on to mention his name and insult his mom, his hood and all. Why didnt he come out to say “o drake misunderstood me, the sweet song wasnt for him” why immediately respond as though that was a move he was waiting for. Its effing callow and self serving!

Actually Common went after alot of rappers in “I used to love H.E.R.”
” I see people slamming her (onyx) and taking her to the sewer (Das EFX)” just to name a few.
He wasn’t doing anything for publicity or starting beef, he was just telling people how he felt about the state of H.E.R. and some people (very few) caught feelings.
He’s doing the same thing now with “Sweet”. Jay did it with death of auto-tune. Luda gave y’all a little history lesson recently on the “Supa Dupa flow”. And other artists like Sha Stimuli, and KRS-one are still at it addressing the same type of stuff. Just cause Drake is passive-agressive and uses sophistry to duck a challenge he imposed on himself by feeling like the guilty party, doesn’t mean people challenging the state of hip-hop on regular basis needs to change.
I don’t see what the big problem is.
It’s all pretty simple if you know the history and character of artists you’re talking about, which is really missing in today’s climate, and a lot of rappers, not just Common are responding to what they see as things that should be challenged in the current climate. That’s all.
Put this sh*t in context! jeez

Oh almost forgot in “Invocation” Common says “I could’ve sample Diana Ross a long time ago” That’s a reference to “Mo Money Mo Problems” by Biggie. And it’s commonly known that the whole bad boy thing was not received well at first by die hard hip-hop heads.
The point is Common has ALWAYS been vocal about what he thinks about the state of hip-hop. Sweet is nothing new and Drake needs to stop trying to play the victim.

You must not read very well, people are saying Common doesn’t beef to sell records. When Common beefed with Ice Cube, he wasn’t promoting a record, in fact he didn’t put out a new record until two years after he dropped his dis record with Cube. And it wasn’t ten years ago, it was almost *17* years ago. Cube dissed Common first on the Westside Connection debut and Com responded, not for publicity, but in his own defense. He didn’t even include the dis record on a commercially released album and waited two years to drop a follow up, so where’s the publicity angle? LMAO! Total fail! Do some research before you make statements, homie, you’re terribly misinformed. Common has never started a beef with someone to sell records in his 20 year career, period, end of story.
And Common did roughly 60K in his first week. Clearly those 60,000 people already had their mind made up to buy The Dreamer, The Believer without any drama surrounding it (or do you think all 60,000 just bought it because they hate Drake? LMAO!!! Hell no). If you were a serious hip-hop listener, you would know the real hype around that album was Common reuniting with No I.D. (and doing his first collab with Nas), not this f–king nonsense.

Man, your Common jock riding must have impaired your vision.
So given what you said about Westside Connection, why release “Sweet” has the lead single off of the new album? It’s for buzz (aka publicity, aka people are talking about you, aka what we’re doing now).
“Sweet” was released mid Nov 2011. “The Dreamer/The Believer” was released in late Dec 2011. So how did 60k people make up their mind to buy the LP without drama?
I’m not saying Common is better than Drake or Drake is better than Common. But there’s an obvious reason why he made this song.

“Sweet” wasn’t his lead off single by any means but it got some attention.. But if you were listening you would know he released “Ghetto Dreams” with Nas in July and that’s what got the ball rollin that there was a Common album coming. That was there first collab and it was ill. “Blue Sky” came some time in Oct. And then “Sweet” was his 3rd single..
I feel like Common did Sweet and Drake bit the bullet by giving it attention on dat stage show and then Com ran with it. Now Drake trying to find an out right now because the heat is on and he aint built for that.

@ Emeka — You are LYING or are simply misinformed. Common NEVER said that Sweet was about Drake. He said if Drake is offended he must feel it’s about him! Show me the clip or article where Common said the song was about him. You can’t because it doesn’t exist. The blogs took what he said & misrepresented it (titles like “Common confirms Sweet is About Drake”) to people like yourself who don’t actually listen to what the person says.
Common never to this day said Sweet was made solely for Drake. He said whoever wants to take offense is who it is about.
It’s like Common threw a rock into a pack of dogs and Drake howled because he is the one who got hit. The question is, why did Drake get hit?? Is being called “sweet” a touchy subject for him or something? No one else seemed to feel bothered but him. Why?

Sorry mimi but its you who is misinformed. Yeah he started of by saying it wasnt directed at anybody but “that was how he felt at the time” and all that gibberish. Then Terrence and Rocsi on BETs 106 park asked him about the trend on twitter and he said “beef is part of hip hop and that if Drake was down they could go at it” Rocsci even said “Drake Commons calling you out lets have one battle…mic battle that is” (i’m paraphrasing) Tell me that wasnt a subliminal swipe at Drake.
The fact remains that without the purported “beef” nobody wouldve been talking bout commons “dreamer” album and all what not. The essence of the stunt has been achieved.

Drake is like the dude that talks sh*t about you behind your back in school and then runs home at 3 o’clock when you’re waiting to shoot the five. He has vaginitis. I’m sick of the unibrow bomber throwing subliminals and then ducking for cover when he’s called on his bullsh*t. He went in on Lil Kim rather than let her on Nicki Minaj handle theirs, and now recognizes that he’s outgunned against Common. Baby is a hypocrite claiming that they don’t participate in “beef” when that’s the basis of Nicki’s new “Stupid Hoe” video and the bulk of her content for the last year. Stop the bullsh*t, it’s sickening. Lil Wayne is another lame that runs from fights he starts too. It’s so sad to see how gullible “fans” (or Stans) have become when they’ve invested into an “artist” and then find that individual has character challenges (Rick Ross anyone?) and still rides with them. This is music/entertainment. It’s not real. These individuals have a hu$tle and if they want to command the public’s attention they must be willing to rise to challenges when they occur and not run home like cowards. F*ck Drake for being a snowflake. This is hip-hop, not that emo-rap sh*t you push to those mall rats.

I find it funny that people feel the need constantly refer to black men as either hard or soft. If John Mayer was beefing with Luke Wilson over Jennifer Aniston, people wouldn’t constantly refer to them as “soft” or “square” in the articles. But, if you are black you are soft unless you are a street thug? I don’t understand.

Intensely victimized people who are otherwise powerless find the prospect of afflicting violence onto other victims to be a lot more comforting (in their ‘discomfort zone’) than confronting the reality they too are victims. Although I see your point and agree with the context of it being made, hip-hop is a ‘contact’ genre unlike the realms which John Mayer and Luke Wilson pilot. Therefore, there is a distinct difference. Drake isn’t just soft, he’s a p*ssy. I say that because he goes out of his way to lyrically beat up on females like Lil Kim and Vanessa Bryant and then backpedals when dudes step to him. I can’t stomach a cowardly dude of any background. He’s a shameful cretin. Personally, I think Black women should whip his *ss for disrespecting their sisters (regardless of how confused those sisters might be). Kobe, if he’s a man should slap the sh*t out of him for talking about the mother of his children.

^^^^^ Balderdash!
He didnt diss vanessa (no longer bryant) he simply used her as an analogy to express the way he felt about making money, power, fame and people cashing in on you. Which is kinda what happened between her and kobe. Common is doing the same. if you have ever studied “48 Laws of power” yould see that one of the laws involves “taking on someone whose dominating that area to gain relevance, notoriety or just publicity” it fits this context.

You know Common laughing right now. Drake is letting his succes go to his head not realizing he is FOOD for alot of rappers. “TUFF TALK/SLICK TALK I’ll bring it to you dunny”.
Next week he’ll say somnething slick again. Drake already made his bed now he too good to sleep in it. Can’t wait for him to run into Common. I bet he ain’t gonna do sh*t. Common looks like one punch and it’s night night for drake.
I bet Common got some heat for him. Drake is already THinking Com is gonna destroy me I’m only two albums in. It be a wrap for me. It’s crazy cause COMMON already looking like the winner. And drake looking soft. Stand your ground you can’t talk shit then play it off like you above of this. It was your verse in stay scheming that prompted Com TO REPLY.

To be honest Common shouldn’t really be going at Drake…he is too big for that. A vet vs a rookie…nah not interested. Just like Lil Kim shouldn’t be going at Nikki too. They( Common/Kim) is only making them look hotter than what they actually are. But I do think Drake is mad talented….nothing wrong with him thinking his the chit…he’s young and competitive. Has long as it stays lyrical.

Do you guys think Sweet could have really been directed at anybody?? Common knew what he was doing. Plus when it came out everyone felt it was directed at Drake so he had no choice but to respond.

Drake riders obviously forgot how he was raised & where he is from. You think he’s from Nola or Miami? NY or LA?
Dude is from upper middle class Toronto!!! He was on Degrassi High!!! Remember the episode where the gay porn fell out of his locker?! Bahahaha! I bet he didn’t even say the word “Nigga” until he was 21 for fear of being slapped by his mama. He is what he is, so be proud of that. Don’t act street because you hang with Officer Ricky & fake blood Weezy haha.
He realizing his mouth is writing checks his body can’t cash. He couldn’t even man up & confront the tattoo artist face to face. That’s some pussy shit. I used to beat up cats like him in middle school for talking slick.
