Drake Comments on Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse: “Are You Listening To It Now, Though?”
Posted by Mikey Fresh under Interviews , Quotes[17] Comments

Last night, Drizzy Drake graced Elliot Wilson’s CRWN stage for the first time. Taking place at the NYU Shimmel center, October’s very own talked to the packed audience for over 2 hours. He gave away tons of intimate details about the recording of Nothing Was The Same and bits of his personal life. Myspace is set to release the video clips starting on Wednesday, but one particular moment made it’s way online already. When YN asked how he really felt about Kendrick’s “Control” verse, Drake didn’t seemed to moved by K. Dot’s lyrics. However, he admitted that they saw each other in person after at the VMAs and it was all love, but in Drake’s eyes it doesn’t seem like the verse has his complete cosign.
“That [‘Control’] verse was a moment to talk about. Are you listening to it now, though?,” he asked, hushing all 850 attendees at NYU’s Skirball Center, including Wilson. Drake continued: “He didn’t come in there on some wild, ‘I’m in New York, fuck everybody.’ I almost wish he had come in there on that shit because I kind of lost a little bit of respect for the sentiment of the verse,” Drake said. “If it’s really ‘fuck everybody’ then it needs to be ‘fuck everybody’. It can’t just be halfway.”

That’s cute to twist the argument to his favor by suggesting that verse has no replay value. But that wasn’t the point of it in the first place. It was to make a statement, and it worked. The next question should have been “Well, we may not be listening to it now.. BUT WE’RE STILL TALKING ABOUT IT THO.”
I guess he thinks for something to be great musically that it needs to be played over and over. No. That was a verse on a not-so-great song that created a moment in Hip-Hop. It wasn’t even a Kendrick song by the way! Now, ask if people are still listening to GKMC and the answer will be HELL YES.

It’s a sad day in Hip Hop when Drake says something gangsta and for a split second you actually believe him….smh #control

WOW! *Rosenberg voice* he needs to stop. Kendrick is still on fire since GKMC. Drake wants to have all the attention, mad cuz Kendrick only has 2 albums & is doing something big like touring with Kanye W., is getting so much love from pretty much EVERYONE significant in Hip Hop past or present, Kendrick did the right thing on the control verse, its not lyrically his best verse but mos def a verse with a ton of impact…

Drake was the whack ass when he went back at common on ‘stay schemin’ & didn’t even say common’s name. My opinion, Kendrick above drake just off of skill & talent, & I feel Kendrick even tho still young in the game has caught up to the level of KRIT & Cole, not better but on that level. DRAKE BEING SALTY!

Drake is right about this one. Music critics want Kendrick to be Nas so bad it’s pathetic. Can we get album number 2 first before we put him in the history books? Drake earned Jay-Z’s old seat now Kendrick has to put in work for Esco’s.

I totally agree with you…It was a nice line by Drake to try to flip the whole thing on some 8 mile isn…but people are still talking about the verse!!!!

True indeed!

Drake has much more to go to earn Jay’s seat. I think you need to follow your own advice and slow down.

Fair to say that Drake has TRIED to put his name on Jay’s seat, but ultimately he can’t. He’s still a toddler. Realistically, he’s been copying Jay’s success and trying to use it as a template. This album is suppose to be Jay’s Volume 1/Volume 2 combined. Listen close. He’s really starting to think he’s Jay…but really he’s just a kid from the ‘burbs who’s allowed to say these things cause the kids love him.
Actually, he’s kinda like the Justin Beiber of Hip Hop. One.

Is it me or is Drake starting to sound hella gay in these interviews? I lost respect for Drake over the Kendrick shit, this nigga really took that verse to heart which lets me know this dude ain’t got no bars… This nigga don’t want to see that Bar raised high, he ain’t tryna jump and get it he better off trying to skydive; out the exit window of 5 G5’s with 5 grand.
Sincerly,
Drakes Gay

drake’s point is that he’s making music to stand the test of time and sell records in perpetuity, not making verses to light up the blogosphere for a week.
i’ve listened to “control” maybe 3x and i respect the tactic and competition. but i think the only reason ppl are still talking about it is because there were like 100 response records (furthering the drama + conversation) and the u.s. audience is infatuated with beef records.
i’ve been in europe all summer. no 1’s talking about control here.
