DJ Premier talks about Biggie, Nas, and Diddy’s knowledge of hip hop *snicker*

DJ Premier was the honorary subject of my coworker Peter Rosenberg’s Noisemakers session at the 92Y last night, heard it was amazing! Luckily FWMJ and DJNess were on hand to capture footage.
Here Primo talks about producing “Unbelievable” for the late great BIG, his time living in Brooklyn with Branford Marsalis (ahh, the Jazzmatazz era), and his thoughts on Diddy, lol….
After the jump, Primo had the crowd entranced with stories of producing Nas’ “Nas is Like”…..
Primo is the one of the 3 reasons I wish I had satellite radio.

Back when I was programming WBLS (Back when we played hip hop all day) the week got there I ran into Primo at Rock & Soul records while digging for vinyl.
The absolute first thing that jumped out of my mouth was, “Yo Primo, do you want to do a mix show?”
He said yes without blinking. He didn’t even ask about the pay.
I gotta say that his show was the one thing that I never missed. Everyone knows he’s one of the best producers ever, but that dude is easily one of the most underrated mix DJ’s to ever hit the radio/mixtapes.
Not only that, he broke more acts than your average DJ… which makes sense because he was making half the hip hop hits back then! Haha Lots of people owe him for their careers, but Primo doesn’t care about all that and he didn’t even do it for the money. He only cares about good music. I wish there were more DJ’s like that in the industry.

Primo is one of the reasons why I even know what Hip Hop is. I remember being in grade school when the Gangstarr Anthology came out and playing Royalty in the Car with my mom…she flipped out at some random curse word in the song..She had no idea. LOL

Nope, but now that I think about it I’m gonna hit him up to see if he does.
When he was on the road with Gang Starr he’d give us a DAT tape with that week’s show so Primo might still have a few somewhere minus the station ID’s and drops.
I remember I used to work late on Friday’s not because I had to, but because I wanted to be around to watch him do his thing. You know how that is. Fat Gary, Black, Lil Dap and the whole crew would be in the house cracking jokes. It was a good time.
He used to play the unedited versions of everything but he was so sick on the turntables that he would ‘Primo scratch’ the cuss words out live which would make it hotter. How that dude was so accurate on records that just came out that day is beyond me.
That just goes to show that you should always save the on air tapes of the important stuff. 10, 15, 20 years later you might not care about 99% of it, but that 1% you are REALLY gonna miss.
Aww man. This whole issue is really bringing up tons of early 90’s hip hop memories back when everyone was fam. Every party had damn near every journalist, rapper, producer and exec in it just enjoying the music – no vip room needed. Damn. Money fucked it all up.

Michael Jordan – really??
As for this video I must say… I didn’t watch it! I think Cipha and Rosenberg are marginally funny on Hot 97 or whatever, but Cipha kind of OD’s on the ignorant hood dude schtick sometimes. Here’s hoping he’s not that dumb.
